1. Introduction
iSLE (Implementing Sri Lankan Empowerment) is a UK-based registered charity established in 2022 to improve the lives of individuals and communities in Sri Lanka through greater access to basic resources including clean water, nutrition, healthcare, shelter, education and networks.
We work with international partners in Sri Lanka to ensure our projects are sustainable and focus on areas that could most benefit from our support. All trustees are volunteers to allow maximal resources to be delivered to the underprivileged.
2. 2023 Projects
Project WiRE (Water and Irrigation through Renewable Energy)
Water and I rrigation through R enewable E nergy (WIRE) stems from an observation made during a visit to the Kilinochchi area in the summer of 2022. At this time, there was a terrible shortage of diesel fuel and very long extended electricity cuts due to the government going through a financial crisis and thus having no foreign currency to purchase oil for the country. Crops failed on small holdings because they had no access to diesel to run their irrigation pumps.
Many poor families still have no access to water and increasingly rely on sustainable water drawn deep from the water table on their land. At 30 ft deep, it is an overwhelming challenge to hand draw the water to irrigate their land where they grow subsistence crops. Providing an irrigation system that works on renewable energy not only is the right thing to do to tackle climate change, but it is also the most resilient and economical thing to do to ensure crops don’t fail.
WIRE will provide the much needed wells but will also team up with local engineers to ensure the irrigation systems adopted by the recipients are also based on renewable energy and also meet their needs for personal water use and irrigation.
This is a long term project and this year has been spent gather supporters in the Rotarian community to construct an application in the future.
