## **Report of the Trustees**

## **for the Year Ended 31st January 2025**

The trustees present their report with the financial statements of the charity for the year ended 31st January 2025. The trustees have adopted the provisions of Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2019).

## **OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES**

## **Objectives and aims**

The charitable objectives as laid out in the constitution of Thousand Year Trust are:

1. The promotion, protection, and expansion of temperate rainforest

2. The creation and facilitation of farming clusters focused on the integration of agroforestry methods within agricultural systems

3. The advancement of research, knowledge and skills development opportunities in restoration ecology not just associated with temperate rainforest restoration but nature recovery across Europe

The Thousand Year Trust is the only charity in the UK dedicated to restoring our temperate rainforests.

The mission of the charity is to triple the amount of rainforest growing across the UK over the next 30 years from 330,000 acres to 1 million acres.

These objectives are being met through three project initiatives:

## Thousand Year Project

The Thousand Year Project is working to implement a large-scale demonstration of how to restore temperate rainforest on land previously used for lowland farming, with the area used for grazing sheep. This unique programme will showcase how farming temperate rainforest can become a financially sustainable alternative to traditional farming.

## Cornwall Rainforest Project

The goal of this project is to triple the amount of temperate rainforest growing across Cornwall from approx. 4,000 to 12,000 acres, focusing on the eastern Cornish climatic envelope. This will be a world-first in terms of the scale of habitat restoration of which we, as a country, can be proud.

## UK Rainforest Research Institute

We will create an inviting space for academics invested in our mission to come to our site and study our existing patch of rainforest while uncovering how we can best preserve, protect and expand what we have. With accommodation and desk space we can host the best minds from around the world with the intention of creating a thriving body of evidence to be shared with other rainforest guardians and we'll be able to understand our own rainforest intimately to keep it in pristine condition.

## **Public benefit**

The trustees can confirm that they have had regard for the Charity Commission's guidance and there has been a focus on the public benefit of the activities of the charity.

## **Volunteers**

Thousand Year Trust has proactively engaged with educational programmes across the South West to offer 10 placements for research and land management.

## **ACHIEVEMENT AND PERFORMANCE**

## **Charitable activities**

Achievements for the Thousand Year Project have included:

- By early December 2024 close to 40,000 trees have been planted

- Beavers have been reintroduced to the Bedalder river valley with immediate ecological benefit

- A study identifying the potential for Wild Cat reintroduction has been completed

The priority for Cornwall Rainforest Project has been to secure a partner with experience in successfully applying for the Government Landscape Scale Recovery scheme.

Achievements in developing the UK Rainforest Institute have included:

- Appointment of two sector leading Co-Directors for the research programme

- Progressing with agreement of university partnerships with University of Exeter, University of Plymouth and Eden Project Learning

- The creation of a project plan for the development of the research institute

- Development of a programme of activity and key research milestones for the research programme.

## **FINANCIAL REVIEW**

## **Financial position**

During the year the charity made net income of £59,764.

At the year end the charity had the following on the balance sheet:

Current assets of £45,479 Current Liabilities of £4,911

Net Assets of £63,962, of which £36,379 were in the form of unrestricted funds.

## **Principal funding sources**

Grants from charitable funds, donations from corporate partners and individual giving are the main forms of income for the charity.

The Fundraising Manager is working on fundraising initiatives for c.3 days per week with a pipeline of funding proposals worth £500,000 on which we are awaiting responses - this includes significant investment in key projects as well as an element of core cost.

## **Reserves policy**

The Thousand Year Trust reserves policy sets out the need for building reserves to cover core running costs within the charity and to give security to the charity’s main 3 projects.

The charity is currently operating with a minimal committed cost base by using casual worker contracts and through using self-funded educational placements to accomplish the work of the charity.

The tree-planting is funded through a EWCO grant which gives certainty to the completion of the planting initiative.

The commitments of the charity to habitat restoration require long term operations as it will take many decades for recently planted sites to mature. This continuity is a risk.

At year end the charity had free reserves of £36,379.

## **Going concern**

The trustee's have given consideration to the charity's going concern and concluded that the level of funding in place is sufficient for the charity to continue as a going concern.

## **STRUCTURE, GOVERNANCE AND MANAGEMENT**

## **Governing document**

The charity is controlled by its governing document, a deed of trust and constitutes an unincorporated charity.

Thousand Year Trust is controlled by its governing document, a constitution for a charitable incorporated organisation (CIO) using the foundation model.

**Thousand Year Trust**

## **Notes to the Financial Statements**

## **for the Year Ended 31st January 2025**

## **1. ACCOUNTING POLICIES**

## **Basis of preparing the financial statements**

The financial statements of the charity, which is a public benefit entity under FRS 102, have been prepared in accordance with the Charities SORP (FRS 102) 'Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2019)', Financial Reporting Standard 102 'The Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland' and the Charities Act 2011. The financial statements have been prepared under the historical cost convention.

## **Income**

All income is recognised in the Statement of Financial Activities once the charity has entitlement to the funds, it is probable that the income will be received and the amount can be measured reliably.

Cash donations are recognised on receipt. Other donations are recognised once the charity has been notified of the donation, unless performance conditions require deferral of the amount.

Legacies are recognised on receipt or otherwise if the charity has been notified of an impending distribution, the amount is known, and the receipt is expected. If the amount is not known, the legacy is treated as a contingent asset.

Grants are recognised when there is evidence of entitlement to the gift, receipt is probably and the amount can be measured reliably.

## **Expenditure**

Liabilities are recognised as expenditure as soon as there is a legal or constructive obligation committing the charity to that expenditure, it is probable that a transfer of economic benefits will be required in settlement and the amount of the obligation can be measured reliably. Expenditure is accounted for on an accruals basis and has been classified under headings that aggregate all cost related to the category. Where costs cannot be directly attributed to particular headings they have been allocated to activities on a basis consistent with the use of resources.

## **Tangible fixed assets**

Freehold property is not currently depreciated as the asset has not yet been brought into use.

Tangible assets except freehold property are stated at cost (or deemed cost) less accumulated depreciation and accumulated impairment losses. Cost includes the original purchase price, costs directly attributable to bringing the asset to its working condition for its intended use, dismantling and restoration costs.

## **Taxation**

The charity is exempt from tax on its charitable activities.

## **Fund accounting**

Unrestricted funds can be used in accordance with the charitable objectives at the discretion of the trustees.

Restricted funds can only be used for particular restricted purposes within the objects of the charity. Restrictions arise when specified by the donor or when funds are raised for particular restricted purposes.

Further explanation of the nature and purpose of each fund is included in the notes to the financial statements.

## **Pension costs and other post-retirement benefits**

The charity operates a defined contribution pension scheme. Contributions payable to the charity's pension scheme are charged to the Statement of Financial Activities in the period to which they relate.
