1. Objectives and activities

The Nature of Learning Foundation (also referred to as NOLF) is a grant-giving charitable organisation that aims to enable opportunities for people to benefit from the natural world who encounter barriers to such opportunities.

Our Charitable Objective is:

The advancement of education for the public benefit by making grants to enable children, young people and adults who may otherwise be excluded by socio economic factors or disability to access the educational opportunities and experiences in the natural world offered by recognised Forest School Association forest school providers.

In our first year, we chose co-chairs, a secretary and treasurer. 1.00 GBP was required to open our Building Society account, which was donated by the Trustees. The trustees have worked together to developing governing documents including finance, grant awards and general data protection regulation policies. We have progressed a suite of administrative functions, including a partnership agreement, grant application forms, a scoring matrix, outcome letters and review forms and exploring a web-based platform from which to manage our services. We started to build a simple website and decided on charity branding.

Grant making guidelines

Funds must be used only to meet the NOLF charitable aims. They cannot be used to grow a business, for the organisation and its facilities as a business.

Applications can be made by requesting, completing and returning an application form to our registered address or by email to funding@natureoflearningfoundation.org.uk

Public benefit: in explaining how the charity's activities are striving for public benefit in its work, the trustees have met the requirements of the Charities Act 2011.

2. Achievements and performance

The Trustees met in June, September and November 2023.

We sought funding from six organisations to grow our resources and enable us to support projects in the interest of our aims. We successfully obtained funding of £720 from one charitable incorporated organisation at the end of the year.

In this reporting period we have established a grant application and assessment process alongside our grant-making policy. By the end of this period we are in a position to begin taking applications to make the best use of our funds to make a difference to the circumstances of beneficiaries and the wider public.

3. Financial review

All funds are held in a Saffron Building Society interest bearing account.

The Charity doesn't have a policy to maintain a free reserves at a minimum level. As of 31 December 2023, the balance of the Charity’s unrestricted funds amounted to £723.

The Trustees have assessed the major risks to which the charity is exposed, in relation to the operation and finances of the charity and is satisfied that systems are in place to mitigate their exposure to the major risks.

After making appropriate enquires, the trustees have a reasonable expectation that NOLF has adequate resources to continue in operational existence for the foreseeable future. For this reason, they continue to adopt the going concern basis in preparing the financial statements.
