STATEMEKT FROM THE CEO AND FOUNDER •v.

Dear Supporters, Partners, and Friends,

In times of unprecedented challenge, the resilience and determination of the Ukrainian people shine brightly as our name Svilo - light in Ukrainian. At Svitlo Education, we see this spirit every day as we work to address the urgent educational challenges created by the ongoing war in Ukraine. Children who once thrived in classrooms now face disruptions, uncertainty, and the emotional toll of displacement. Yet, amidst these trials, the thirst for learning and hope remains unbroken but the opportunities are not there.

Svitlo Education was founded to address these issues and educate the future social and political leaders of Ukraine with democratic values and excellent English skills. Our mission is simple but profound: to restore access to education, rebuild opportunities for growth, and ensure that no child’s potential is lost to the chaos of war. Through innovative digital learning experiences offered by our amazing teaching volunteers, safe educational spaces, and inclusive community, we are empowering children to dream again and realise that now is the time to work for their future.

This impact report is a testament to what we can achieve together. Thanks to your generosity, we’ve reached thousands of children, supported Ukrainian teachers in growing professionally and provided critical resources where they are needed most. But the work is far from done. Millions of children still face barriers to education—barriers we cannot overcome without your continued . support

Education is not just about books and lessons; it’s about hope, stability, and the promise of a better tomorrow. By supporting Svitlo Education, you become a ’ vital part of this journey—a light in the darkness for Ukraine s children. Together, we can ensure that their future is not defined by conflict but by community, learning, and resilience.

Thank you for believing in the power of education to transform lives, even in the most difficult of times. Your support fuels our mission and strengthens the hope that brighter days are ahead. With deepest gratitude,

Yuliya Kosko, Founder and CEO

Svitlo is truly one of the best things that has happened to me over the past two years. With the onset of the war, it was very difficult to re-engage in studies and even to enjoy all the ordinary things ’ as before. Now I have so many friends here, and I m so happy to have had this opportunity to become part of such a warm community and simply take part in school life.

Svitlo is a place where teachers become your friends, where you can always improve your knowledge of English, evaluate your progress and rejoice in new results. Svitlo is a home where your classmates will always support you and inspire you to succeed. Kira, 12 years old, Zaporizhia

’ - At Svitlo I m doing what I enjoy — learning English in a discussion based format. Here, I found friends with whom I communicate online, and a community of motivated, friendly people, where I feel like part of one big family. I have favourite lessons that I look forward to the most because I know each one will leave me with pleasant moments that I’ll smile about for the rest of the day. Until now, no school has given me such emotions.

Oleksandra joined Svitlo Education in September 2024. She is 16 years old and lives in Vinnytsia, Ukraine. She learned about Svitlo through her parents, who had heard about the positive experiences of one of our students from their friends. This year, Oleksandra will be graduating from her Ukrainian school and aspires to work in IT. One of her biggest dreams is to travel and explore the world.

When we spoke with her in November 2024, she was attending 35 lessons per week at Svitlo. When asked how she manages this alongside her Ukrainian school commitments in the mornings, she responded, “Svitlo is like a lifesaving rope from everyday realities.”

Shortly after joining, Oleksandra felt comfortable and motivated to take on more responsibilities at the school. She became a member of the Student Council, where students collaborate to share and implement ideas for improving the school. She then progressed to becoming the ambassador of one of the school’s four houses, taking on an administrative role. Additionally, she became passionate about one of our ongoing projects, Svitlo Reads, and joined the team of students leading this initiative.

Oleksandra, 16 years old, Vinnytsia, joined Svitlo in autumn 2024.

12

’ Here is Oleksandra s story:

“I started attending Svitlo lessons in September with the goal of attending three lessons a week to improve my English. At first, I was a little nervous about speaking to native English speakers, but everyone was very friendly, and other pupils encouraged me. It only took me four days to adapt, and after that, I felt confident and realised that Svitlo was becoming something much bigger than just a school.

After just a few weeks, I realised that I had attended 31 lessons in a single week. I ’ was shocked—it s more than a full day of lessons—but instead of feeling exhausted, I felt energised! I enjoy every lesson because I really love learning new things from our teachers, sharing thoughts and ideas, meeting interesting people, and feeling a sense of safety during these challenging times. Every teacher at Svitlo is unique, with different life experiences, and I believe I can learn so much from them.

Svitlo helps me in achieving my goals. First and foremost, it supports my learning of English, which is a major requirement for working in IT and incredibly useful for my future travel aspirations. In some lessons, we also practise presentation and communication skills, both of which are essential for my future career. My involvement in Svitlo outside of classes has provided me with valuable experience in working as part of a team. I have learned the importance of communication and compromise, as well as the value of team spirit.

To be honest, I would love to study at Svitlo all day rather than go to regular school! At Svitlo, every lesson feels important for our future. In fact, during the war, it feels like the best time to focus on preparing for the future. We discuss how to build businesses, learn about government structures, read different types of books, talk about our feelings, and simply have fun.

’ ’ Svitlo isn t just a school—it s a new experience, a place to make friends, a fast connection with teachers, the freedom to choose lessons, and, most importantly, the chance to take responsibility, be part of a big community, and prepare for adult life.”

Alison, teacher of Story Time for younger students, joined Svitlo in spring 2022.

Alison has been in education for 47 years, initially working as a primary school teacher before transitioning to a university role training prospective teachers. She also led training courses for teachers and served as the subject leader for Primary English Education. Alison retired a year ago and, alongside volunteering for Svitlo, she is a trustee for a local Talking Newspaper. In her free time, she enjoys gardening, plays the ukulele in a group that meets weekly to practise and perform at different venues.

For almost three years, Alison has run two 45-minute storytime sessions each week for younger students at Svitlo. During these sessions, they read and discuss wonderful books together. In addition to exploring existing stories, Alison collaborates with her students to create new ones, incorporating their - illustrations to make unique, student authored books, often with a Ukrainian theme to the delight of our pupils.

14

“I joined Svitlo because I hated feeling that there was nothing I could do to support the terrible situation in Ukraine. This felt like something concrete that I really could contribute.

At Svitlo, I’m doing what I love: hopefully inspiring children to read for pleasure ’ and to enjoy the rich engagements that picture books offer. It s been my lifelong work.

It’s also down to the children I have worked with. Their enthusiasm, resilience, imagination and energy are inspiring. Gradually, over time, the way the sessions work has evolved so that we do much more collaborative story making. These stories derive from the children’s interests and the books we share. I’m fortunate that my husband is very skilled at photoshopping and what he has done with the children’s pictures really celebrates them.”

15

Svitlo is much more than just the lessons we offer. We are a community that provides a safe and supportive environment for all our students, helping to restore their stolen childhoods. We build on the strengths of the British educational system and adapt it to address the gaps in traditional Ukrainian schools.

Our academic curriculum for younger students focuses on providing a strong foundation in English , enabling them to explore other subjects in their second language.

For older students , our focus shifts to offering a variety of practical subjects, helping them discover potential career paths early on and equipping them with the skills and knowledge required to succeed in these fields.

16

Svitlo is the organisation where you can find friends who share your interests, take your mind off the war, and gain a variety of — knowledge all for free. I love Svitlo with all my heart, even though I've only been studying here since September.

Nika, 15 years old, Odesa- Italy

For me, Svitlo School is a second home. Svitlo has had a great ’ — impact on me I ve significantly improved my English level and even found a true friend in my teacher.

Gordiy, 14 years old, Berdychiv (Zhytomyr)

Outside of lessons , students are encouraged to build social connections through our house system, various individual and team festive competitions, school assemblies, and a buddy system. We are particularly proud of our student council, as we have expanded its role beyond the traditional approach of developing and implementing ideas improving the school.

Our student council members are fully involved in the school’s operations, gaining valuable transferable skills that are highly sought after by employers and enhancing their CVs to secure jobs, even during challenging times like the war. They take on roles such as social media managers, event organisers, administrators, teaching assistants and teachers, project planners, and leaders. Through these responsibilities, they learn to use different software, collaborate effectively in teams, and develop a professional work ethic.

17

SVITLO READS

In the Spring of 2024, a team of Svitlo students participated in an international program by Global Social Leaders (GSL), where children from around the world design their own socially impactful initiatives.

Svitlo students decided to focus on promoting reading in English and offer people of Ukraine from all backgrounds access to a wide range of books on - various subjects . They identified a gap in access to English language books in Ukraine, driven by high prices and limited availability, and proposed the creation of an online library to address this issue.

Building on their initiative, Svitlo School helped the pupils to create an Instagram account, @SvitloReads, where Ukrainians can affordably purchase or rent physical books in English and receive them by post, with all proceeds going to Svitlo charity. The store is largely managed by students, helping them develop entrepreneurial, communication, teamwork, and organisational skills. They learn to strategise, communicate with clients, design marketing campaigns, and manage administrative tasks.

We are campaigning to involve schools across the UK, as well as individuals, to donate or purchase books for Svitlo Reads and fundraise for shipment. Wellington College's own GSL team of 4 pupils were the first to join us on this mission. These books are then sent to our students in Ukraine who are involved in the project, to be further sold or rented to the Ukrainian public.

18

Stage 2 of the project, which we began in December, involves equipping Ukrainian school bomb shelters with books in English . We have partnered with a school in Ukraine that received a mini library designed in the shape of a red British telephone box, filled with English books. Through this initiative, we hope to promote enjoyable reading in English for children during the prolonged air raids they must endure in bomb shelters and recruit more pupils to join Svitlo School. For the next year, we have already partnered with three schools in Kharkiv, Kyiv, and Bratslav (Vinnytsia region) to expand the initiative to their schools. By 2025, we hope to install a total of ten mini libraries in schools across Ukraine.

IMPACT:

Library/bookstore by post is up and running

Books collected in the UK 537 and shipped to Ukrainе

8 Students involved in a project

Mini library installed in a 1 Ukrainian school

I feel like many people forget about the importance of books and what they can teach us. But learning a language while enjoying a good story is really wonderful, isn’t it? That’s our mission - to make reading fun, accessible and beneficial!

Anna, 17 years old, Kyiv

Creating and working on the Svitlo Reads project has taught us a lot about teamwork, communication, and how to engage people to read.

Angelina, 18 years old, Bratslav-Poland

19

READING BUDDIES

In a new partnership with the Giglets online literacy platform, Svitlo School's older pupils (15-18 y.o.) have been trained to deliver online reading lessons to our younger students . They teach younger students pronunciation, word meaning, and help build their confidence to become independent readers. This prepares the younger pupils with lower levels of English to access lessons run by native English speakers and our older pupils how to become teachers, take responsibility and give back to the community.

Their lessons are reviewed by the team and teaching volunteers with feedback and suggestions on areas and techniques for improvement. Reading buddies also share their successes and challenges with each other, encouraging mutual growth and experimentation.

STUDENTS AS TEACHING ASSISTANTS

We have been training our students to become teaching assistants (TA) for some of the lessons at Svitlo .

This is a part of our long term vision of equipping our students with knowledge and skills through the holistic training and experience to become teachers of English as a Second Language (ESL).

IMPACT:

My TAs are all essential and excellent. They are the link with the students across language and cultural barriers; totally up to speed with all the software (which we oldies are not) and they are ready at a moment's notice to sort out problems. Because of them and with their assistance, I have been able to adapt the courses to suit the interests and needs of each group of students.

David Beck, teacher of English Literature

Our students acquire the skills and experience necessary to enter the workforce immediately. For instance, our student Alina, a recent high school graduate, now works as an English tutor while also applying to universities to study civil engineering, with the goal of helping to rebuild Ukrainian infrastructure after the war.

Over 2 years of teaching the Story Making course and becoming a TA at Svitlo has not only been a journey of improving my own knowledge but also a platform for unlocking my teaching potential.became the key to working as a tutor. I not only realised how much I love teaching but also gained the confidence to take this important step in my career.

Alina, 17 years old, Bratslav (Vinnytsia region)

21

SUMMER SCHOOLS

In the summer of 2024, 27 of our students and one teacher from Ukraine had the opportunity to attend nine different summer schools in the UK and the USA . They participated in exciting programmes, gaining academic knowledge and experience in areas such as Journalism, Law, Theatre, Science, and IT, as well as improving their English.

We managed to keep these trips free of charge for pupils thanks to our partner summer schools which offered free places and Svitlo sponsors who funded their visa fees and travelling costs. For many, it was their first time on a plane, the first time outside Ukraine but also the first two weeks of sleeping through the night and seeing a peaceful plane in the sky since February 2022. Many had long dreamed of meeting each other in person, but until now, it hadn’t been possible.

Now, these students eagerly share their summer experiences with anyone who will listen. They lead inductions and webinars to recruit new students to Svitlo School, inspiring others to work harder and dream bigger. What might seem like just two weeks of fun away from home meant so much more to these children: they had the chance to recharge mentally, form lasting friendships, and create memories that will help them stay positive through the challenging winter ahead in Ukraine.

22

IMPACT:

These 27 students were able to:

I significantly enhanced my English skills and noticed an improvement in my general communication abilities. I met some incredible people in the camp who taught me a lot about their cultures. I also enjoyed learning what it’s like to be responsible for myself and make important decisions on my own.

Fedor, 17 years old, MPW

This was my first trip without my parents, and I learned to manage my daily routine on my own. I also took my first exam ever, which wasn’t as scary as I thought it would be.

Alisa, 11 years old, BOSS

During my time in the summer school, I improved my critical thinking, problem solving and research skills. I have also enhanced my time-management, self-awareness and listening skills, as well as boosted my confidence.

REMARKABLE PEOPLE

Remarkable People is an initiative that allows our students to learn directly from the experiences of individuals with diverse backgrounds. It is a series of talks by fascinating individuals from various fields who are interested in sharing their journeys with young Ukrainian minds.

In 2024, our students and broader community of friends have enjoyed talks from remarkable individuals with diverse expertise, including:

IMPACT:

This initiative has been an excellent way for our students to broaden their horizons, inspire them to dream bigger, and give them a unique opportunity to ask personal questions to highly accomplished individuals.

24

These sessions motivated students to deliver a similar talk themselves. As a result, we will begin 2025 with a talk titled “United Ukraine by Svitlo Pupils,” where our students will share insights about different cities in Ukraine with Svitlo’s wider community.

The talk was incredible! I loved the session so much, sad that it only lasted an hour. It was so intriguing and fun to listen to Steve!! Just super cool!

UCL & DELOITTE DESIGN SPRINT

In spring 2024, a team of Svitlo students had the opportunity to participate in a business case competition organised by the University College London (UCL) School of Management in collaboration with Deloitte Digital . They were the only online group joining the workshop hosted by UCL.

Svitlo students (aged 15-17) competed alongside undergraduate and postgraduate students from UCL School of Management. They attended workshop sessions on Design Thinking from Deloitte Digital and applied the new tools and techniques they learned to their project.

To learn more about the competition, read the article published by UCL School of Management.

IMPACT:

This sprint was a pivotal moment where I realised my passion for the business world. I learned how to analyse companies in depth and discovered that consulting was a potential career path for me. I believe that when done thoughtfully, the business sector plays a crucial role in advancing society, making an impact.

ONLINE ASSEMBLY

Marking the two-year anniversary of the fullscale war in Ukraine, Svitlo School collaborated with the National Association of Head Teachers (NAHT) to organise an assembly for hundreds of schools across the UK . The event was also covered by Sky News and streamed on YouTube.

During the assembly, three students from Svitlo shared their personal and emotional stories of how the war has impacted their lives, raising awareness among British students about the ongoing events in Ukraine. These Svitlo students displayed remarkable courage and resilience, inspiring others to continue growing and developing despite the challenging circumstances they may face.

27

EBRD

In 2023, employees of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Developmen t (EBRD) began fundraising €25,000 for Svitlo through various events. They successfully reached their goal in 2024, with the bank generously matching the amount.

Additionally, in the summer of 2024, EBRD offered Svitlo students a six-week course on anti-corruption . The course covered the following topics:

We are eager to develop similarly impactful connections with other companies in the future.

28

DLAC

In February 2024, Svitlo had the opportunity to give a presentation at the Digital Learning Annual Conference (DLAC) in Austin, Texas. Yuliya Kosko spoke about Svitlo’s experience in motivating pupils to study during times of conflict and uncertainty.

The conference provided Svitlo with valuable insights from online schools in the USA, allowing the adoption of best practices within Svitlo. It also facilitated the creation of meaningful partnerships, including one with Skidmore College in New York, which will be further developed in 2025.

29

WE WOULD LIKE TO THANK ALL OF OUR PARTNERS WHO SUPPORTED SVITLO IN 2024!

HELP US SUPPORT UKRAINE THROUGH EDUCATING ITS YOUTH

This war has been ongoing for almost three years, taking away children’s homes, families, friends, and future. Unfortunately, the longer it continues, the weaker the support Ukraine receives, while the damage continues to grow. Therefore, your support is more crucial than ever. Please consider supporting Svitlo in any way you can.
