In the year to 22 November 2D25 Hariogate Cat ResGue admitted 8 further 41012024= 2581 cats and kittens using our dedicated network of volunteef foster carers and transport volunteers and have sv¢cessfully re-homed 32012024 = 3281 felines. These cats and kittens included rescued strays, unwanted P8ts who had been surrendered forvarfous re8sons. and tamed outdoor bred kitton8.

Whilst it is no longer nearly always fatal due to advances in vet8rinarytreatment, th8 Costs 8nd time involved in treating cats and kittens with the dreadful condition are huge. The treatment consists of 84 days of medication followed by 84 days Df observatlon to ensurether8 is no recurrence of symptoms. this treatment ISV8ryexpenslve gnd needs.tobe.completed befor.e.a ¢at.or kitten cgn even be consldered for permanent.re-homing. This therefore leads to increased pressure on our network of foster carers dueto the minimum 6- month period before the animals ¢an be r6-homed. There are two m8jor local ongoing sources of c8ts and kittens In need of rescue whlch e8ch presentthelr own difficultie8:_ A single house In the BD3 8r8a of Bradford whlch had ¢)var 25 cat8, 811 the lemales who were mature enough were pregn8nt, all were severely malnourished as well neglectod and kept in the dark. Harrog8te C8t Rescue has taken over twenty cats from ihls location to date. not including the klltens born after rescuing the pregnant mothers. All female5 rescued have been pregnant and all litt8rs from these cats have suflered from a varietyofg8netic def8Cts necessitsting intense and expensive veterinary tre8tments. Thi$ has a knock-on effect on re-homlng a8 these c8ts C8nnot be re-homed until their full health condltlons are Identlfled and proporly trethted. The88 ots generally thèrefore have o prolonged Stay In foster caro meaning finding suitable foster home81s more dlfflGuIt. The second locatlon is a disused 8nd dilapidated farrn near Ripon whlch continues to be an18SUe as the outdoor cats there are continuing to breed but Harrogate Cat Rescue are unab18 to take on any more cats at present as foster homes ar¢ lull,. at the current time the Re$¢ua has 140 Gat8 with foster Garers plus 40 In long-term fosterlng. these ¢8t8 8nd kltten8 are extremely tlmld du8 to mlnlmal ¢onta¢t wlth human8 but are 3ult8ble for rehomlng In du6 cour8e. We have continued to support other sltes with outdoor colonies, wlth help to neuter cats and to rehorne kittens born outside once suitablysocialised and dome8ticat8d. Where we ole unabla to domesticate cats and kitt8n8, we partnef Wth a re8cue speclall8lng In rehomlng In Safe outdoor settSngs and have had much 8UCC@88 In findlng homes for many cèts who prefer th8 outdoor life. Harrogate Cat Rescue continues to help support other Independent rescuers across North and West Yorkshire 8SSlStlng with foster space including re5Guing cats and kittens trom horrific and barbaric situations where they arg being bred tu b8 sold specifically for dog balting. The R88CU8 has ¢ontinu&d to recruit new foster carer volunte8r8 and volunteer drlvers duringthe period since our last report, there are now 69 foster carers and 22 drivers across the local areo. In addition to the above. we support members of the public with advlc8 on Ihe pregnancie$ of thelr cats, and the unw8nted litters, as well 8s on how they c8n help stray cats. partlcularly unneuteTed niales. Two of the kittens resGued recently (Neve & Noir) have significant deformities in their front legs and It was recoTnmended that they be euthanised to prevent suffering. Following extensive specialist treatment how8vor they are borh Improvlng, and we f881 that they can lead happy and relatively comfortable lives going forward.
