PUBLIC BENEFIT In makingdecisions on the work of The Westmorland Orchestra, the Committee has had regard to the guidance on public benefit 188ued by the Charity Commission. The Orchestra seNes the public in generally, but in praetice those who live in or near KenLlal. It provides opportunities for people io participate in making music to a high standard by playing with the orchestra and to enjoy it by attending concerts in the area. CHARITABLE ACTIVITIES Roport ofthe Chalw on b•haltof tho Commlttoo The 2024125 Season sawthe WÉslmorl8nd Orchestra continue in its mission to 8ducatÈ its members and the widerwestmorland and Cumbria community. New Music Director Melvin Tay's first full Season with the orchestra is already demonstrating results in terms of a bold ¢hoice of 8 repertoire and iri the enthu8i8sm of members, aitend8nce and numbers. In its tttree concerts, the orchestra tackl8d major symphonic masterpieces in works byTchaikovsky, Shostakovi¢h and Stravinsky as well as introducing a new soloist to Kendal aL¢dien¢es with Leora Cohen giving 8 mastertul pertormance ol the Sibelius Violin Concerto. The December Familylchristmas concert was also a huge hit with the orchestra and an audience of 8118gos, with the much delayed Scary Fairylinally delivered together with local narrator Matt Berry. The concerts were reasonablywell attended and it seemsthat the members 8nd audience enjoy the ambience and acoustics of Kendal Parish Church, where two of the concerts were played. Critical acclaim noied.thtr orchestra clearly enjoys a good relationship with Melvin Tay and the success of Ihis concen was due to hls clear direetion and p18yers' response" A number of new Patron$ were recruited during th8 year, helping to boost income and to spread the word of the orchestra's activities. The orchestra now boa8ts a regular membership of around 60 players, making it Cumbria's largest classical 8nsemble. Underthe leadership and directlon of Melvln Tay and L88der Pamela Redman, we increased the number and range of 'sectional' rehearsals. Individual sÉ¢tions of the orchèstra were tuloreil and mentored by expert proféssional piactilioners and these were well attended. The 2024 summtrr playing sessions tackled important tymphonies by Tchaikovsty and Rachm8ninov as well as some lighter or¢hestral favouriies under two conductors. These sesslons are a vlt81 wayto keep the members active durlngthe summer break from concerts as well as a means to attract ngw members. 175 musicians 8ttended over the four sessions. A full day Study and playlhrough of Shosiakovich's 5th Symphonywas also well attended in Grange-ovèr-sands in September, gettingthe new season off lo a blaiing start. CONSTITUTION The Westmorland Orchèstra is a CharilablÈ Incorporated Orgènisètion. governed by its constitution which follows the"Association model. of the Charitycommission. The Westmorland Orchestra CIO was registered on 5J8nuary 2023 in orderto 18ke over thts as8ets and opeialions of The Westmorland Orchestra (registered number 5023391. the predecessor charity. The new constitution refle¢ts as closely as possible the Constitution of the predecessor, unincorporated essociaiion. The members of the Orchestra pay a membership subscription and 8re eligible to vote at General Meetings of the Orchestra. Almost all members also play in the Or¢hestra. The Westmorland Orchestra is govern8d by 8 committee elected by the Orchestra Membership from amongst their numbei. The Constitution requires th8t there be at least three Trustees. The committee meets S8veral times In each lerm. at the discretion of the members, in order to manage the Orchesira. In accordance with the con￿￿tUtIon a Chair is appointed who will ¢hair meetings of the Committeè and of the Membership. In accordance with the established prgciice of the We8tmorl8nd Orchestra, the Chair 81so ¢o-ordlnates the running of the Orchestr2. The committee Ereatly appreciates guidance from Making Music on consiitLrtional and administrative matters. The Orchestra rehearses at Casiie Street Community Cenire in Kendal. The Centre Manèger is always supportive and accommodales last-minLtte changes of plan and extra requirements whenever possible. Concerts hove traditionally been held ai Kendal L8isure Centre and more occasionally at Kendal Parish Church. The service provided by the Leisure Cerbtre has declinBd but the cost has increased,. in the short term more concerts are likely to be at the church. Contacts are ma5ntained with other musical groups Sn the area. including Lakeland SinfoniB. Cumbria Festlval Chorus. Haffner Orchostra. Lakè District Music Summer Festival and othgrs. RISK ASSESSMENT The Committee has considered the major risks to which the charity is exposed and sought to address them. This is done by keeping policies up to date (led bythe Honorary Secretary) and maintaining insur8nce Cover. Followingihe experiences ofwinter 2023-24. the Committee ha8 de¢ided to increase ihe level of insurance cover. The growrh in membership and successluL8rani 8ppIIc8tion$ have strengthened the tinanclal posrtion of the ch8rity and Reserves ore healthy. Changes to classical music provision across Cumbria are being monitored. L8keland Sinfonia are working less closelywith Northern Sinfonia. who 8re now being promoted by Better IKend8t Leisurtr Centretthe Sand81 and professlonal orchestras are doing outreach work In the county. This year. ticket sa16s of £70,613 have comfortably overtaken membership subscriptions. It mtsst be remembered that the c8ncellatlon of the December 2023 concert did depress the ticket sales in the comparativa period. Subscriptions did not increase this year. so Ihe higher flgure rellects continued growth in a¢tive membership. Thi8 has b$trn obvious at concerts in the wonderful large sirlng Section, which suits our repertoire weu. Income from Grants is very varl8ble as they are individually large sums of money. The Orchestra continues to lake opportunities to apply for grants as this extra source of income supports ambitious repertoire ¢hoices. The first claim for Orchestra Tax Relief, based on reh8arsal costs of thr8e concerts in the year toJune 2024 lev8n ihough one was cancelled) coniribuied £5.150 which compensates for the reduction in grant8 received. This will be 8 continuing source of income. but the rate of Relief has reduced during the year which will restrict next year's receipt. As noted last year we have developed plans for change in the 2025126 season. There wlll befour concerts. instead ol the traditional three. but with 8 raiher than 10 rehearsal each. Thus rehear881 Costs will be broadly similar. The inevitable incrgase in concert day costs should be balanced by ticket takings for 4 Concerts. In order to accommodate four concerts. we have (ostthe tra(Jitional Christmas slot!_The first concert ol the next season will be in November. But we do have a-f8mily concert. in january. Freed from Christmas constraints this will be"Around the Worl(J in 80 MinLrtes", featuring music from diflorent cultures. This enhances the tyelivery of the charity's Educational Objective.
