## **Charitable Aims** 

The advancement for the public benefit of the art of music in the rural communities of East Yorkshire and the wider Humber region, with an especial focus on bringing wider opportunities to engage with music in performance and related activities. 

## **Summary of Activities relating to these Aims** 

## _Competitions_ 

_East Coast Young Musician of the Year_ , an inclusive and supportive competition in Hornsea for players aged 8 to 25 with a clear connection to the Yorkshire & Humber region. Over 40 young musicians took part in the initial online video round. For many this was their first performance, and the winners of each age category were invited to play in a gala concert at Hornsea Music Society, where the overall winner was announced. At each stage of the competition players were given clear, actionable feedback, and the finalists learnt a huge amount from listening to one another. Hornsea music lovers had a fantastic evening 



and were very touched and impressed by the performances of all involved. It was expressed by all concerned how valuable such an event is in terms of performance experience, personal growth and musical learning. Entry fees were kept to a bare minimum, and there was a fee remission scheme to make the competition accessible to all. 

_Scarborough Symphony Orchestra Concerto Competition_ , an opportunity for advanced local players up to the age of 21 to enter into a more rigorous process which tests not only their technical ability, but also their creativity and musical knowledge with regards to programming. From 6 initial applicants, three were chosen to audition, choosing cellist Haru Okigara to be the first to have the opportunity to perform with Scarborough Symphony Orchestra (SSO) in May 2026. The orchestra and their conductor Shaun Matthew will now engage in a supportive mentoring process to help the winner make the most of the experience. This kind of opportunity has never existed before in the Yorkshire & Humber region, and YWMF are pleased to have been able to offer it. 

_YWMF Gig Competition_ , a battle of the Bands with a difference - over two rounds, 6 bands (including 31 young musicians aged 10-19) from Hull & the East Riding honed their skills and competed in a final showdown open to the public at Driffield Methodist Church. The local community thoroughly enjoyed the evening, and the performers had fun while gaining valuable performance experience and receiving constructive criticism. Teachers and band mentors noted the importance of this learning experience, how much personal growth each and every performer had achieved and that the young musicians had so much fun taking part. They, and the parents and supporters of the young people taking part, urged YWMF to continue with this annual event. 

## _Annual Festival_ 

Unfortunately, despite some very exciting plans, our May festival did not transpire as not enough funds were raised. This prompted the trustees to enlist the services of a freelance fundraiser on a short-term basis, which has so far resulted in £3,500 being raised towards next year’s festival.

This leaves YWMF with a healthy balance going forwards, covering operational costs and giving a healthy boost towards next year’s festival and any future workshops and community days we plan.
