Trustees' Report

Sixpenny Handley Village Hall CIO For the year ended 31 March 2024

Objectives and Activities

Purpose

The provision and maintenance of a village hall for the use of the inhabitants of Sixpenny Handley and the surrounding area without distinction of political, religious or other opinions, including use for:

A) meetings, lectures and classes, and

B) other forms of recreation and leisure-time occupation,

with the object of improving the conditions of life for the inhabitants.

Activities

For such charitable purposes for the public benefit in the parish of Sixpenny Handley and Pentridge. To maintain, manage and co-operate with any statutory authority in the maintenance and management of the village hall for activities promoted by the charity.

Public Benefit

The trustees confirm that they have complied with the requirements of section 4 of the Charities Act 2011 to have due regard to the public benefit guidance published by the Charity Commission for England and Wales.

Achievements and Performance

After much discussion, form filling and determination the new Charitable incorporated organisation was accepted by the charity commission in 2022. The old charitable trust was finally dissolved at the end of last year, a new lease with the parish council agreed and we have just completed our first financial year of the CIO.

The trustees are delighted to report that the Hall has had another busy year. Bookings remain strong and we thank our wonderful user groups for their support.

All of the trustees have worked incredibly hard over the last year, especially our entertainment committee. Hosting another sell out children’s Artsreach show in the February half term, again raising some funds for the hall but more importantly, great for our community and social cohesion.

The entertainment committee will be speaking to the school, shops, church and wider community to involve as many as possible in the lead up to the upcoming show in October.

The entertainment committee has worked hard to build goodwill amongst a core audience of community regulars who are genuinely grateful for what they’re doing. Those who attend the Artreach events from all around Dorset have also commented on how wonderful it is to see such a varied programme of events going on at the hall.

The New Year’s Eve Party was a great success . We had 90 paying guests and made a profit.

The fund-raising quarterly Craft fairs started well last month with a bumper number of stall-holders and good turnout of support.

Our Community Cinema continues to be well received and supported. It has now established itself as a regular feature of the Winter months and as an asset to the community and our working relationship with the team at St Mary's PCC which goes from strength to strength.

Trustees' Report

The trustees have once again been delighted to offer the hall to groups that support and benefit our community free from charge. The church team recently held a fantastic D-day longest yarn event which was extremely well supported. It’s lovely to see the hall used as a centre for the community to gather.

We have again liaised with the Parish council and completed maintenance and repairs. Thank you to the Parish council for funding the installation of our solar panels and the recent costly repairs to the heating system.

The trustees have undertaken a huge number of improvements and maintenance, too many to list, but we are delighted with the refurbishment of the foyer with new plaster, paint, locally made sign and notice boards.
