Haydock Hedgehog Helpers Rescue is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation ICIOI, registered

promoting best practices pollcles that have the animals in our care at the centre of conslderations.
The Charity is proud to be an evidence-based practice. meanin8 that the daily operdtions and pollcies

Organlsatlo
The trustees oversee the flnancial affairs and management of the charity; the day to day
running of the charity is the responsibility of Charity co-founder and Chalr Trustee Kelly Leyland.
Alms and obJectl¥es
The object of the Charity 15 to:
To promote for the benefft of the publlc the conservation and preservation of the wild hedgehog
species by..
al Providing first aid. treatment, and rehabilitatfon to sick, injured or orphaned hedgehogs in St
Helens and the surrounding area. with the aim of releasing such hedgehogs back into the
wild wherever possible;
bl Providing education to the public in the subject of Supporti￿ and promotlng the hedgehog
population within the remit of their daily lives.

Admissions
In 2023 we admitted more hed8ehog5 than prevK)us years: 312. compared to 271 admissions in
2023 and 233 admissions in 2022. Our busiest months were April to October 2023 with 277
admissions. which is similar to previous years and in al￿nment with our knowledge of hedgehog
ctivity li.e. hibernation period and active period). Our busiest monih of 2023 was April, with 45
admissions. The busiest months saw the rescue runni1￿ at or beyond capacity. and this reflects the
need for a larBer premise5 to cater to more hedgehogs in need of our service5. A select number of
volunteer foster carers where able to collectively house around ten hedgehogs at any one time with
low care needs after a period of assessment at the rescue. This approach allowed u5 to admit more
hedgeho85 With hi8her care needs, however our capacity was Th)t able to cater for the quantity of
hedgehogs that we were approached about and thus needed redirecting to other overstretched
rescues in the area. We were very lucky to secure donations to fund the purchase of another
Incubator that slgnificantly increases surrfrrfability of the most vulnerable hedgehogs in our care.
Educatlon
Durin8 2023 we were able to deliver online arAI in-person oUt￿a¢h and education to a number of
different associations and 8roups, including Scout and Brownie/ Guides 8roups, primary school
classes. and adult groups. During our outreach and educatfion. we have Spoken about toplcs such as
anatomy, behaviour, habitsts. the role of our rescue. safety issues affecting hedgehogs, wildlife
friendly gardenin& and solution advke to the problems hedgehogs face In our gardens.
We provided col*e pla￿$ for students and universty placements for two Students, and one
Duke of Edinbur8h Award volunteer pIa￿rnent. These five placemerrt alone total over hour5 of
work experience at our wildlrfe faulity. One of our university students completed her dissertation
uslng our rescues patient record database; entitled 'FaLtors that may kad European hedgehogs
IErinaceus europaeusl to be admitted to a rescue centre in the UK. and is now 5tudyin8 a Masters
degree ￿gardIng hed8ehog ecobgy (again utlllsing our rescue for data collectionsl.
8ased on a hedgehog In our care In 2023. a scientlfic study entitled "Investigating'pug-nosed/dwarr
abnormalities in European hedgeho85' is currentty undep*ay by Dr Sophie Lund Rasmussen which is
endorsed by the Royal Veterinary College. Although not yet published. the study has already located
more specimens WFth the same abnomialities as our hedgeho& highli8htSnB a distinct but prevlou51y
unresearched 8enetic abnomiality occurring in the UK population of wild hedgehogs. Additionally we
en8a8ed with another research project regarding the study of microbiomes of hedgehogs bv
ontributtng 15 faecal samples to be induded in ￿ld study.
Social media continues to be at the heart of our education programme. We use many
platforms including Facebook and most re￿ntty Instsgram. The use of individual pètient'storiesl
journeys, posts are utilised as examples to educate members of the public on the needs an(i
challenges of the hedgehog population. The rn05t people reached for a single Facebook educational
post in 2023 was a video of a hoglet calling for his FfK)ther, highlighting the indication to member of
the public that an orphaned hedgehog nearby may need help. and also explainin8 how we care of
hoglets at the rescue: thÉs post over ttvo million Facelx)ok user&
Partnership working
Special mention Should be made to the stsff at medI￿t Billinge who have continued throughout
2023 to offer their unwavering support to our rescue and particularty to Lead Hedgehog
Rehabilitator Kelly Leyland. Without their help our ￿ScUe would not be able to succeed in the
manner is does.

Future plan5
Rehabilitation
We as a Charity must continue our main objective to provide first aid and rehabilitation to sick.
injured and orphaned hedgehogs in the St Helens and surrounding areas. We should continue to
research operational methods that could improve the survivability of the hedgehogs in our care.
Expansion of facilities
In October 2021 the Ilescue was generously gifted £5(KKJ for the purpose of expanding the Chèrlvs
premises. This project has not yet materialised due to the delays and resi8nation of our prior
volunteer who bulld our existing structure wlthout payment beyond materials. Plans have been
drawn up for the structure and the contents, but further fundraisin8 effort5 are needed to actualise
this project in terms of covering material cost inflation and labour. This premise extension is much
needed and will serve our community better, and Itls regrettable that It has not yet being
completed. We rnust research a concrete price for this project and fundralse to achleve this goal.
Fundralslng and Income
We as a Charity need to review the fundraisin8 strate8y to ensu￿ sustainability moving foThvard. An
annual month-by-month plan of fundraisin8 activitie5 Should be creating to ensure momentum. We
must register wlth Gift Aid to take advantage of the available extra value of the donation5 we
generously receive. We should promote the use of dlrect debit donations to ensure some form of
confjnuous income.
Educatlon
We as a charity need to continue with out outreach and education practices, such as hostin8
educational talks and creating engaglng social media posts that are accesslble to a wide range of
audiences. We should offer college and university placement opportunities to more students, and
explore trainin8 options for our Volunteers beyond our current ad hoc approach.
Approved by order of the board of trustees on 5 February 2025 and $18ned on Its behalf bv:
