CHARITY NUMBER: 1201150 TRUSTEE REPORT FOR PERIOD 25/11/2022 TO 31/12/2023
Watchet Baptist Church had been operating as an Association for a number of years but in February 2021 the membership voted to transition to a new CIO and the application process was started, with the CIO being registered with the Charity Commission on 25[th] November 2022.
We were then informed by Baptist Union guidance that we would need the written permission of the Baptist Pension Trust before we transferred our assets from the old association to the new CIO and that failure to wait for this permission could see a £50,000 fine levied against the church. We were advised to leave the CIO dormant until this matter was settled, and, as Trustees, we decided this was the most prudent course of action and immediately wrote to the Baptist Pension Trust to explain the situation. Our correspondence received no reply.
There then followed almost 18 months of us attempting to contact the Baptist Pension Trust by mail, email and telephone, and receiving no reply from them at all. Finally, frustrated at the lack of contact, we wrote to them in August of 2024 informing them that on 1[st] October 2024 we would be transferring our assets and that if they did not wish us to do this, they would need to contact us by that date. This approach did illicit a prompt response and we were able to finally enter into a ‘side note’ with them whereby the matter was resolved and we finally had our permission to transfer the assets of the old association into the CIO.
Thus Watchet Baptist Church CIO 1201150 lay dormant, with income and expenditure at £0 for the entire reporting period 25[th] November, 2022 to 31[st] December 2023, and this is reflected in the attached accounts.
I am happy to report, however, that as of 1[st] October, 2024 CIO 1201150 is fully active and hope to be able to produce a more positive report at our next Annual Review.
