The trustees present their report and financial statements for the year ended 30 November 2025. The trustees confirm that the financial statements comply with current statutory requirements: the Memorandum and Articles of Association and the Statement Of Recommended Practice - Accounting and Reporting by Charities (SORP), applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with FRS 102, and Part 11 of the Charities Act 2011.

## STRUCTURE, GOVERNANCE AND MANAGEMENT 

Cooking Champions is a registered Charity and a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO). It is governed by a Constitution. 

During the year, there were a minimum of three Trustees on the Board. The Board meets at least four times a year. It sets the strategic direction for the organisation and has the overall responsibility for the running of Cooking Champions, which is delegated on a day to day operational basis to the Chief Executive, Clare Donovan. 

Board meetings consist of an operational update, provided by Clare Donovan and the executive team, a financial update and a strategic forward look. 

The Board is involved in the drafting, review and approval of all relevant policies and procedures for Cooking Champions. All Cooking Champions Trustees and Staff are required to undertake online courses in safeguarding. Trustees are also provided with access to training materials via ICAEW. 

Bianca Tia Mesuria is the Chair of the Board. Sanasum Perera, Sam Kagwi and Caroline Armstrong acted as Trustees during the year and stepped down during the year to which this report relates. Bianca Tia Mesuria, Katy Chakrabotty and Sarah Peazer were recruited and joined the trustee board in September to ensure that the Charity governing document stipulation of a minimum of three Trustees was met.  The Board and the Executive team undertake an annual Trustee skills review to identify any gaps and if additional expertise is required. Cooking Champions will be seeking to recruit at least one additional Trustee during 2026. 

All Trustees act on a voluntary basis, and have not received any remuneration from Cooking Champions during the year.

## ANNUAL REVIEW 

## **Summary** 

Cooking Champions has been supporting the people of North London since the start of the pandemic in 2020. 

After gaining charitable status in November in 2022, we have spent our time further establishing the charity in the local community and a full year of activities in our community kitchen. 

We have continued to provide food support, education and training across North London. This includes over five years of continuous weekly food bank services. Highlights of the year include celebrating our kitchen’s third birthday, working throughout the year to deliver the highest quality cooking lessons, our award winning community garden and celebrating six years of providing meals on Christmas Day. 

Similar to last year, we have seen a further increase in demand for our food support services. During this 12 month period the charity distributed 12,744 bags of food. This is a 34% increase compared to the previous year. 

The trustees are hugely grateful to our fantastic executive team, led by Clare Donovan, and all our volunteers, without whom the Charity would not function. 

The Board of Trustees are proud of the services Cooking Champions has provided over the past year, and we look forward to continuing to work with our CEO, staff and volunteers in providing services to alleviate poverty through food support, education and training. 

## OBJECTIVES AND ACHIEVEMENTS 

## **Objectives** 

The objective of Cooking Champions is the relief of poverty in London and the surrounding area by providing food parcels, prepared meals, food education and support through a community kitchen for people in financial hardship. The trustees understand their responsibility to keep this public benefit central to the work and activities. Cooking Champions principally operates in the London Boroughs of Enfield. 

Cooking Champions uses self employed individuals to deliver its services and funds the work through donations, grants and general fundraising. In addition, the charity also uses an extensive team of volunteers to provide its services and support the local community. 

We work as part of an ecosystem of charities and local community organisations to alleviate hunger and increase food security including The Felix Project, Food Bank Aid and Enfield’s Women Centre.

## **Achievements and performance throughout the year.** 

## _Food Support_ 

Food support, via a food bank, was provided every single week for people across the London Borough of Enfield. The service was available for people to select their own food in person at our food bank. Our delivery service was stopped in the summer. This was to make sure we were using our resources as effectively as possible. 

Keeley Forbes oversaw the running of the food bank as part of her role as Assistant Manager. Daniel Oag joined the food bank team in August 2025. Key changes this year included reducing the service to one day a week and stopping deliveries. Both of these changes were made due to lower volunteer numbers and reduced funding. We are pleased to report that we were able to help the same amount of people and the number of bags distributed actually increased. In addition, we strengthened our systems to further understand the circumstances of our recipients and to better meet their needs. 

## _Meals made in the kitchen_ 

Cooking Champions staff and volunteers prepared an impressive 7,128 meals between December 2024 and November 2025. These meals supported our much-loved Thursday community lunches, school holiday programmes, and cooking lessons. 

Our experienced team consistently excels at creating delicious, nutritious meals using the diverse ingredients generously provided by The Felix Project. Over the past year, we placed a strong emphasis on enhancing not only the taste and presentation of our meals, but also the efficiency of our preparation processes. 

At the heart of our work is a core belief: every meal we serve should meet the same high standards as one a paying customer would expect. 

## _Cook for Good_ 

Our CEO, Clare Donovan, was selected to participate in the inaugural Cook for Change programme run by Cook for Good. This multi-faceted initiative focused on exploring new income streams for Cooking Champions. 

As part of the programme, Clare attended an intensive three-day bootcamp followed by specialist workshops delivered by Google, Deloitte, and Peabody. At the programme’s graduation ceremony, Clare designed a bespoke menu—an excellent opportunity to showcase the quality, creativity, and range of our catering offer. 

Clare is now part of a fantastic alumni network of social enterprise leaders, primarily based in London, providing an ongoing source of inspiration, collaboration, and support.

## _Refugee Week Film Screening_ 

Coordinated by our Communications and Strategy Lead, Rachael Chadwick, we were honoured to take part in Refugee Week—the world’s largest arts and culture festival celebrating the contributions, resilience, and creativity of people seeking sanctuary. 

With funding from Counterpoints Arts, we hosted a special screening of the acclaimed documentary For Sama. The event was made even more meaningful by the presence of Afraa Hashem, who led a heartfelt cooking session, recreating the final dish she prepared before being forced to leave Syria. 

Local Syrian families attended the event, creating a powerful and emotional atmosphere. It was a truly special opportunity to bring the community together and connect families with Afraa and her story. 

## _UCAN Enfield launched_ 

The Unified Community Assistance Network (UCAN) launched in June 2025. In partnership with eight other local organisations, Cooking Champions provides support to people with long term health conditions, sensory loss, neurodiversity, older people, and those experiencing mental health concerns or loneliness. 

We run six sessions each month, and the programme has quickly proven to be very popular—bringing a new group of participants into the kitchen and a great deal of positive energy to our sessions. 

With funding secured for the next nine years, UCAN has become a key and sustainable feature of our weekly timetable. 

## _Kids Can Cook_ 

We launched a crowdfunding campaign in partnership with The Big Give for our _Kids Can Cook!_ initiative. Together, we successfully raised £16,000—enough to fund 40 children’s cooking classes. By the end of the year, we had delivered 18 of the 40 planned classes and will continue running them during future school holidays. 

We delivered our first series of sessions during the summer holidays across two boroughs, receiving overwhelmingly positive feedback from participants: 

- 100% rated teacher satisfaction as 5/5 

- 100% said their family learned something new 

- 90% said the sessions encouraged children to cook more at home 

## _Supper Clubs_ 

To celebrate five years of Cooking Champions, we hosted a series of supper clubs designed to showcase our work and raise vital funds. Each event featured a unique menu theme—including Mexican, Scandinavian, and Texan cuisine—held at venues across the borough. 

Attendees included a mix of loyal supporters and people new to Cooking Champions. The events proved to be a powerful way to engage our community, with many guests going on to donate, book additional catering services, or sign up as volunteers after attending.

## _Strengthening links with Les Dames  D’Escoffier_ 

Clare Donovan is a member of Les Dames d'Escoffier, a philanthropic organisation supporting women across the food, beverage, and hospitality industries worldwide. 

Several members have provided valuable support to Cooking Champions—visiting the kitchen to lead workshops, contributing to our crowdfunding campaign, and connecting Clare with their wider food networks. 

Clare also benefited from collaborating with fellow member Lucy Vincent, CEO of Food Behind Bars, when she joined a cooking session with a group of women at HMP Send. 

## _Our kitchen garden_ 

During the summer, we lost a significant portion of our garden space due to extension work by the adjoining primary school. This was a difficult loss—particularly as it meant, we could no longer deliver our planned outdoor summer cooking lessons. 

In response, we quickly adapted by running sessions in the car park. What began as an emergency solution soon sparked a new idea: to transform the space into a permanent community garden. 

Thanks to a highly successful crowdfunding campaign delivered in partnership with Spacehive and Enfield Council, we raised the funds needed to install a secure perimeter fence. 

The campaign was supported by over 150 donors, including many of our regular kitchen visitors, who were able to contribute small amounts. This was especially meaningful, as it reflected the strength of the community support we receive each week. 

## _Enfield Town Football Club_ 

Cooking Champions completed their second season providing catering services at home matches for the local football team, Enfield Town Football Club. The money raised during the 2023/24 season (finished in April 2025) enabled us to fund 1,223 community meals, 3,250 food parcels and 38 hours of cooking lessons. The decision not to continue for a third season was to explore different catering options and to remove additional hours for Clare as she was awaiting surgery which required a long recovery time. We are grateful to Enfield Town Football Club for the opportunity and support that we received. 

## _Christmas Lunches and Festive Services_ 

2025 marked our sixth year of hosting Community Christmas Lunches. We welcomed a mix of returning guests and first-time visitors, offering a warm, fun and inclusive space during what can be a difficult time of year. This service was funded thanks to our annual Christmas crowd funder. Our fantastic volunteers made it all possible, from prepping food to creating a festive, welcoming atmosphere. We delivered 130 Christmas dinners and had 55 people for a three course meal on Christmas Day.

## FINANCIAL REVIEW 

## **Financial position** 

Cooking Champions financial position is solid, with total assets available at 30 November 2025 of £47,922. Of this, £45,779 is unrestricted usable cash reserves. 

## **Financial performance** 

Our total income for the year ended 30 November 2025 was £113,936 and our expenditure was £125,710 (including depreciation of £6,456), generating a loss in our third year of £11,774. Excluding depreciation this loss was £5,318. 

Of total income received, 96% of our income was from grants and donations. Grants were typically for delivery of a specific project e.g. the delivery of children’s cooking lessons. 

A regular donor to the charity is Seren Catering which is an events catering business set up by CEO, Clare Donovan which provides all profits to Cooking Champions. 

Most of our expenditure relates to staffing costs (£98,588), followed by premises costs (£9,160 - which are principally rent and insurance) and kitchen equipment, food and garden costs (£7,323). Cooking Champions has no financial investments or borrowings and awards no grants. 

This year has seen increased financial pressure in an even more difficult economic climate. This  impacts our service users and staff directly as well as the organisation itself. There is increased competition for grant funding at both a local and national level and the amount of money available for projects that the charity could apply for has decreased. 

## **Reserves policy** 

Cooking Champions has determined that its level of unrestricted usable cash reserves should be three months of operational costs. Our usable cash reserves stood at £45,779 as at 30 November 2025 which falls above the policy requirement. Reserves may temporarily fall below this amount if investment is needed - in such a case this would need to be approved by the Board of Trustees.

## **Principal risks** 

The Trustees and the Executive team have identified the following key risks to the ongoing operations of Cooking Champions. 

They have taken necessary steps to minimise these. Overall, the Trustees and Executive team feel that the following risks are being effectively managed. Key risks are discussed at Trustee meetings. 

## **1. Staff and Volunteers** 

As a small charity, our team are critical to making things work well. Our Founder and CEO, Clare Donovan, is essential to the smooth running of the Cooking Champions operations and takes on responsibilities in many areas. 

We are grateful to our many volunteers and are continually looking to expand our base for those who want to be involved. 

## **2. Food Supplies** 

The charity is reliant on four main sources of food: Food Bank Aid, The Felix Project, Warbutons and public donations. 

## **3. Income Diversification** 

The Charity is continuously looking for new funding sources - whether through grant applications, fundraising events or connecting through the local community. 

## **4. Trustee Board** 

A minimum of three Trustees are required to take decisions under the governing documents, with Cooking Champions aiming to have at least four Trustees in place. We conduct an annual review of whether the Trustee Board collectively has the right skill set to meet the needs of the Charity as it grows. We are looking to increase the number of Trustees and will be recruiting in the coming year.

## FINANCIAL REVIEW 

The Trustees are responsible for preparing the Trustees’ Report and the financial statements in accordance with applicable law and United Kingdom Accounting Standards (United Kingdom Generally Accepted Accounting Practice). 

Company law requires the Trustees to prepare financial statements for each financial year. Under company law the Trustees must not approve the financial statements unless they are satisfied that they give a true and fair view of the state of affairs of the charitable company and of the incoming resources and application of resources, including the income and expenditure, of the charitable company for that year. In preparing these financial statements, the trustees are required to: 

- select suitable accounting policies and then apply them consistently; 

- observe the methods and principles in the Charities SORP; 

- make judgements and accounting estimates that are reasonable and prudent; 

- state whether applicable UK accounting standards have been followed, subject to any material departures disclosed and explained in the financial statements; and 

- prepare the financial statements on the going concern basis unless it is inappropriate to presume that the charity will continue in operation. 

The Trustees are responsible for keeping adequate accounting records that are sufficient to show and explain the charitable company’s transactions and disclose with reasonable accuracy at any time the financial position of the charitable company and enable them to ensure that the financial statements comply with the 

Companies Act 2006 and Charities Act 2011. They are also responsible for safeguarding the assets of the charitable company and hence for taking reasonable steps for the prevention and detection of fraud and other irregularities. 

The above report has been prepared in accordance with the provisions applicable to charitable incorporated organisations (CIOs) and in accordance with the Charities SORP (FRS 102). A CIO is a charity registered as a body corporate under Part 11 of the Charities Act 2011.

I report to the charity Trustees on my examination of the financial statements of Cooking Champions for the year ended 30 November 2025. 

## **Responsibilities and basis of report** 

As the charitable company's Trustees, you are responsible for the preparation of the financial statements in accordance with the requirements of the Companies Act 2006 ('the 2006 Act). 

Having satisfied myself that the financial statements of the Charity are not required to be audited under Part 16 of the 2006 Act and are eligible for independent examination, I report in respect of my examination of your charity's financial statements as carried out under section 145 of the Charities Act 2011 ('the 2011 Act'). 

In carrying out my examination I have followed the Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5) (b) of the 2011 Act. 

## **Independent examiner's statement** 

I have completed my examination. I can confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe: 

- accounting records were not kept in accordance with section 386 of the 2006 Act ; or 

- the financial statements do not accord with those records; or 

- the financial statements do not comply with the accounting requirements under section 396 of the 2006 Act other than any requirement that the financial statements give a 'true and fair' view which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination; or

- 1 **Accounting policies** 

## **Basis of preparation** 

The financial statements have been prepared in accordance with Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2015) - (Charities SORP (FRS 102)), the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) and the Companies Act 2006. 

## **Fund accounting** 

- Unrestricted funds These are available for use at the discretion of the trustees in furtherance of the general objects of the charity. 

- Designated funds These are unrestricted funds earmarked by the trustees for particular purposes. Revaluation funds These are unrestricted funds which include a revaluation reserve representing the restatement of investment assets at their market values. 

- Restricted funds These are available for use subject to restrictions imposed by the donor or through terms of an appeal. 

## **Income** 

- Recognition of Income is included in the Statement of Financial Activities (SoFA) when the charity income becomes entitled to, and virtually certain to receive, the income and the amount of the income can be measured with sufficient reliability.

## **Expenditure**

- Expenditure on These comprise the costs associated with attracting voluntary income, fundraising raising funds trading costs and investment management costs. - Grants payable All grant expenditure is accounted for on an actual paid basis plus an accrual for grants that have been approved by the trustees at the end of the year but not yet paid. 

- Governance costs These include those costs associated with meeting the constitutional and statutory requirements of the Charity, including any audit/independent examination fees, costs linked to the strategic management of the Charity, together with a share of other administration costs. 

- Other expenditure These are support costs not allocated to a particular activity. 

## **Taxation** 

The charity is exempt from corporation tax on its charitable activities. 

## **Tangible fixed assets and depreciation** 

Depreciation is provided at the following annual rates in order to write off each asset over its estimated useful life:

## **Trade and other debtors** 

Trade and other debtors are recognised at the settlement amount due after any trade discount offered. Prepayments are valued at the amount prepaid net of any trade discounts due. 

## **Cash and cash equivalents** 

Cash and cash equivalents comprise cash at bank and on hand, demand deposits with banks and other short-term highly liquid investments with original maturities of three months or less and bank overdrafts. In the statement of financial position, bank overdrafts are shown within borrowings or current liabilities. In the Statement of Cash Flows, cash and cash equivalents are shown net of bank overdrafts that are repayable on demand and form an integral part of the company's cash management. 

## **Trade and other creditors** 

Short term creditors are measured at the transaction price. Other creditors and provisions are recognised where the charity has a present obligation resulting from a past event that will probably result in the transfer of funds to a third party and the amount due to settle the obligation can be measured or estimated reliably. Creditors and provisions are normally recognised at their settlement amount after allowing for any trade discounts due.
