The trustees present their report and financial statements for the year ended 30 November 2024. The trustees confirm that the financial statements comply with current statutory requirements: the Memorandum and Articles of Association and the Statement Of Recommended Practice - Accounting and Reporting by Charities (SORP), applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with FRS 102, and Part 11 of the Charities Act 2011.

## STRUCTURE, GOVERNANCE AND MANAGEMENT 

Cooking Champions is a registered Charity and a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO). It is governed by a Constitution. 

During the year, there were a minimum of three Trustees on the Board. The Board meets at least four times a year. It sets the strategic direction for the organisation and has the overall responsibility for the running of Cooking Champions, which is delegated on a day to day operational basis to the Chief Executive, Clare Donovan. 

Board meetings consist of an operational update, provided by Clare Donovan and the executive team, a financial update and a strategic forward look. 

The Board is involved in the drafting, review and approval of all relevant policies and procedures for Cooking Champions. All Cooking Champions Trustees and Staff are required to undertake online courses in safeguarding. Trustees are also provided with access to training materials via ICAEW. 

Sanasum Perera is the Chair of the Board. Omari Chambers-Alert and Suzanna Gillespie acted as Trustees during the year and stepped down during the year to which this report relates. Caroline Armstrong was recruited and joined the trustee board at the end of the year to ensure that the Charity governing document stipulation of a minimum of three Trustees was met.  The Board and the Executive team undertake an annual Trustee skills review to identify any gaps and if additional expertise is required. Cooking Champions will be seeking to recruit an additional two Trustees during 2025. 

All Trustees act on a voluntary basis, and have not received any remuneration from Cooking Champions during the year.

## ANNUAL REVIEW 

## **Summary** 

Cooking Champions has been supporting the people of North London since the start of the pandemic in 2020. 

After gaining charitable status in November in 2022, we have spent the year further establishing the charity in the local community and a full year of activities in our community kitchen. 

We have continued to provide food support, education and training across North London. This includes over four years of continuous weekly food bank services. Highlights of the year include celebrating our kitchen’s second birthday, working throughout the year to deliver the highest quality cooking lessons, our first ever fundraising gala dinner and celebrating five years of providing meals on Christmas Day. 

Similar to last year, we have seen a further increase in demand for our food support services. Year on year figures show a 53% increase in the number of bags of food we have distributed. 

The trustees are hugely grateful to our fantastic executive team, led by Clare Donovan, and all our volunteers, without whom the Charity would not function. 

The Board of Trustees are proud of the services Cooking Champions has provided over the past year, and we look forward to continuing to work with our CEO, staff and volunteers in providing services to alleviate poverty through food support, education and training. 

## OBJECTIVES AND ACHIEVEMENTS 

## **Objectives** 

The objective of Cooking Champions is the relief of poverty in London and the surrounding area by providing food parcels, prepared meals, food education and support through a community kitchen for people in financial hardship. The trustees understand their responsibility to keep this public benefit central to the work and activities. Cooking Champions principally operates in the London Boroughs of Enfield. 

Cooking Champions uses self employed individuals to deliver its services and funds the work through donations, grants and general fundraising. In addition, the charity also uses an extensive team of volunteers to provide its services and support the local community. 

In order to strengthen our level of support we are also working with other charities and local community organisations to alleviate poverty and increase food security such as The Felix Project, Food Bank Aid and Enfield Women’s Centre.

## **Achievements and performance throughout the year.** 

## _Food Support_ 

Food support, via a food bank, was provided twice a week, every single week for people across the London Borough of Enfield. The service was available for people to select their own food in person at our food bank, or a delivery service was offered for those who could not attend easily. 9,067 bags of food were provided throughout the year December 2023 - November 2024. 

Max Carne joined in September as Food Bank Supervisor as Keeley Forbes moved from this role to Assistant Manager. Since his appointment the food bank team designed and implemented a new referral system to ensure that our resources are being distributed as fairly as possible. This is especially important as our services are more in demand than ever before. Food bank information has been made available in several different languages (i.e Bulgarian, Turkish, Arabic) and we have worked with translators to help support recipients whose first language is not English. 

## _Meals made_ 

Cooking Champions staff and volunteers made 6,897 meals between December 2023 and November 2024. This includes meals served at our community lunches, distributed at our food bank and to support other charities including The Little Things UK, AgeUK Enfield  and Enfield Women’s Centre. The majority of the meals we make are made using produce from The Felix Project. As a team we are able to use our cooking skills and creative thinking to provide nutritious and tasty meals and avoid ultra processed ingredients as much as possible. 

## _Palmers Green Food Festival_ 

For the past four years, Cooking Champions has proudly organised the Palmers Green Food Festival, a vibrant celebration of food, culture, and community held annually in Broomfield Park. As the lead organiser of the food and drinks village, Cooking Champions curates a diverse array of local vendors, offering everything from global street food to artisan treats. The festival features live music, family-friendly activities, and showcases the rich culinary diversity of North London. 

The event has grown each year, creating opportunities for local businesses, encouraging cultural exchange, and putting good food at the heart of a joyful, inclusive community celebration. 

## _Fundraising Gala Dinner_ 

In March 2024, to mark International Women’s Day, St Matthew’s Church in Ponders End was transformed into an enchanting dining space for a special fundraising event. The Inspiring Women’s Gala Dinner, sponsored by travel company echo.bravo, brought together a diverse gathering of over 70 attendees who were treated to a 4-course dinner by 4 professional chefs Dominique Woolf, Melissa Thompson, Thuy Pham, and Georgina Hayden.

The event also offered musical entertainment and a special awards ceremony where Cooking Champions recognised 14 local women during the gala for their exemplary contributions to their North London communities. 

## _Edmonton Green Library Garden_ 

Cooking Champions were commissioned to lead the transformation of a disused space behind Edmonton Green Library into a thriving community garden and learning hub. This “Grow, Feed, Eat, Read” project was developed and delivered by Cooking Champions to engage young people in growing their own food, learning to cook nutritious meals, and improving literacy. 

The garden offers a welcoming, educational space where young people can connect with nature and gain vital life skills. This initiative reflects Cooking Champions' ongoing commitment to supporting the community through food, education, and inclusive, creative spaces. 

## _Enfield Town Football Club_ 

Cooking Champions is the official catering partner of Enfield Town FC, serving high-quality food on match days at the Dave Bryant Stadium. This partnership not only enhances the fan experience but also funds the charity’s vital food support services. All profits go directly towards providing weekly meals and food parcels to residents. The collaboration also offers paid hospitality training for local young people, aligning with the organisations' community-focused values. 

## _New Van_ 

Our new van has been a game-changer for Cooking Champions. It has allowed us to transport larger quantities of food safely and efficiently, supporting the growing demand for our weekly community meals. We can now collect more surplus food from partners like Food Bank Aid, reducing waste and increasing the number of meals we provide. 

It’s made our work more flexible, reliable and far-reaching, helping us respond to community needs more effectively throughout the year. It’s become an essential part of our day-to-day operations. 

## _Christmas Lunches and Festive Services_ 

2024 marked our fifth year of hosting Community Christmas Lunches. We welcomed a mix of returning guests and first-time visitors, offering a warm, fun and inclusive space during what can be a difficult time of year. One guest shared, “If it wasn’t for you I wouldn’t have had a Christmas”. That was a powerful reminder of why we do this work. Our incredible volunteers made it all possible, from prepping food to creating a festive, welcoming atmosphere.

## FINANCIAL REVIEW 

## **Financial position** 

Cooking Champions financial position is solid, with total assets available at 30 November 2024 of £59,696. Of this, £41,831 is unrestricted usable cash reserves. 

## **Financial performance** 

Our total income for the year ended 30 November 2024 was £145,217 and our expenditure was £138,218 (including depreciation of £6,080), generating a surplus in our second year of £6,999. Of total income received, 73% of our income was from grants and donations. Grants were typically for delivery of a specific project e.g. the delivery of hot lunches for the community. 

A regular donor to the charity is Seren Catering which is an events catering business set up by CEO, Clare Donovan which provides all profits to Cooking Champions. The remaining 27% came from income from charitable activities which was predominantly the Edmonton Library Garden Project. 

Most of our expenditure relates to staffing costs (£101,878), followed by food, garden and kitchen costs (£13,566), and premises costs (£10,234) which are principally electricity bills. We also invested in assets during the year which included the purchasing of a van and equipping our Community Kitchen. 

Cooking Champions has no financial investments or borrowings and awards no grants. 

Although Cooking Champions is in a relatively strong financial position it operates in a difficult economic climate, which impacts our service users and staff directly as well as the organisation itself. Whilst it is encouraging to see the rate of inflation falling it should not be forgotten that prices are still rising. Pressures still remain with food and energy prices in particular, and our service users are reporting ongoing challenges with the cost of living. The economic climate also impacts on the availability of local government funding. 

## **Reserves policy** 

Cooking Champions has determined that its level of unrestricted usable cash reserves should be three months of operational costs. Our usable cash reserves stood at £41,831 as at 30 November 2024 which falls above the policy requirement. Reserves may temporarily fall below this amount if investment is needed - in such a case this would need to be approved by the Board of Trustees.

## **Principal risks** 

The Trustees and the Executive team have identified the following key risks to the ongoing operations of Cooking Champions. 

They have taken necessary steps to minimise these. Overall, the Trustees and Executive team feel that the following risks are being effectively managed. Key risks are discussed at Trustee meetings. 

## **1. Staff and Volunteers** 

As a small Charity, our people are critical to making things work well. Our Founder and CEO, Clare Donovan, is essential to the smooth running of the Cooking Champions operations and takes on responsibilities in many areas. 

We are grateful to our many volunteers and are continually looking to expand our base for those who want to be involved. 

## **2. Food Supplies** 

The charity is reliant on four main sources of food: Food Bank Aid, The Felix Project, Warbutons and public donations. 

## **3. Income Diversification** 

The Charity is continuously looking for new funding sources - whether through grant applications, fundraising events or connecting through the local community. 

## **4. Trustee Board** 

A minimum of three Trustees are required to take decisions under the governing documents, with Cooking Champions aiming to have at least four Trustees in place. We conduct an annual review of whether the Trustee Board collectively has the right skill set to meet the needs of the Charity as it grows. We are looking to increase the number of Trustees and will be recruiting in the coming year.

## FINANCIAL REVIEW 

The Trustees are responsible for preparing the Trustees’ Report and the financial statements in accordance with applicable law and United Kingdom Accounting Standards (United Kingdom Generally Accepted Accounting Practice). 

Company law requires the Trustees to prepare financial statements for each financial year. Under company law the Trustees must not approve the financial statements unless they are satisfied that they give a true and fair view of the state of affairs of the charitable company and of the incoming resources and application of resources, including the income and expenditure, of the charitable company for that year. In preparing these financial statements, the trustees are required to: 

- select suitable accounting policies and then apply them consistently; 

- observe the methods and principles in the Charities SORP; 

- make judgements and accounting estimates that are reasonable and prudent; 

- state whether applicable UK accounting standards have been followed, subject to any material departures disclosed and explained in the financial statements; and 

- prepare the financial statements on the going concern basis unless it is inappropriate to presume that the charity will continue in operation. 

The Trustees are responsible for keeping adequate accounting records that are sufficient to show and explain the charitable company’s transactions and disclose with reasonable accuracy at any time the financial position of the charitable company and enable them to ensure that the financial statements comply with the 

Companies Act 2006 and Charities Act 2011. They are also responsible for safeguarding the assets of the charitable company and hence for taking reasonable steps for the prevention and detection of fraud and other irregularities. 

The above report has been prepared in accordance with the provisions applicable to charitable incorporated organisations (CIOs) and in accordance with the Charities SORP (FRS 102). A CIO is a charity registered as a body corporate under Part 11 of the Charities Act 2011.

I report to the charity Trustees on my examination of the financial statements of Cooking Champions for the year ended 30 November 2024. 

## **Responsibilities and basis of report** 

As the charitable company's Trustees, you are responsible for the preparation of the financial statements in accordance with the requirements of the Companies Act 2006 ('the 2006 Act). 

Having satisfied myself that the financial statements of the Charity are not required to be audited under Part 16 of the 2006 Act and are eligible for independent examination, I report in respect of my examination of your charity's financial statements as carried out under section 145 of the Charities Act 2011 ('the 2011 Act'). 

In carrying out my examination I have followed the Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5) (b) of the 2011 Act. 

## **Independent examiner's statement** 

I have completed my examination. I can confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe: 

- accounting records were not kept in accordance with section 386 of the 2006 Act ; or 

- the financial statements do not accord with those records; or 

- the financial statements do not comply with the accounting requirements under section 396 of the 2006 Act other than any requirement that the financial statements give a 'true and fair' view which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination; or 

- the financial statements have not been prepared in accordance with the methods and principles of the Statement of Recommended Practice for accounting and reporting by charities applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102).

- 1 **Accounting policies** 

## **Basis of preparation** 

The financial statements have been prepared in accordance with Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2015) - (Charities SORP (FRS 102)), the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) and the Companies Act 2006. 

## **Change in basis of accounting or to previous accounts** 

There has been no change to the accounting policies (valuation rules and method of accounting) since last year and no changes have been made to accounts for previous years. 

## **Fund accounting** 

- Unrestricted funds These are available for use at the discretion of the trustees in furtherance of the general objects of the charity. 

- Designated funds These are unrestricted funds earmarked by the trustees for particular purposes. Revaluation funds These are unrestricted funds which include a revaluation reserve representing the restatement of investment assets at their market values. 

- Restricted funds These are available for use subject to restrictions imposed by the donor or through terms of an appeal. 

## **Income** 

- Recognition of Income is included in the Statement of Financial Activities (SoFA) when the charity income becomes entitled to, and virtually certain to receive, the income and the amount of the income can be measured with sufficient reliability.

## **Expenditure** 

Recognition of Expenditure is recognised on an accruals basis. Expenditure includes any VAT expenditure which cannot be fully recovered, and is reported as part of the expenditure to which it relates. The charity is exempt from corporation tax on its charitable activities. 

## **Tangible fixed assets and depreciation** 

Depreciation is provided at the following annual rates in order to write off each asset over its estimated useful life:

## **Trade and other debtors** 

Trade and other debtors are recognised at the settlement amount due after any trade discount offered. Prepayments are valued at the amount prepaid net of any trade discounts due. 

## **Cash and cash equivalents** 

Cash and cash equivalents comprise cash at bank and on hand, demand deposits with banks and other short-term highly liquid investments with original maturities of three months or less and bank overdrafts. In the statement of financial position, bank overdrafts are shown within borrowings or current liabilities. In the Statement of Cash Flows, cash and cash equivalents are shown net of bank overdrafts that are repayable on demand and form an integral part of the company's cash management. 

## **Trade and other creditors** 

Short term creditors are measured at the transaction price. Other creditors and provisions are recognised where the charity has a present obligation resulting from a past event that will probably result in the transfer of funds to a third party and the amount due to settle the obligation can be measured or estimated reliably. Creditors and provisions are normally recognised at their settlement amount after allowing for any trade discounts due.

## **Pension costs** 

The charity operates a defined contribution plan for its employees. A defined contribution plan is a pension plan under which the company pays fixed contributions into a separate entity. Once the contributions have been paid the company has no further payments obligations. The contributions are recognised as expenses when they fall due.
