Trustees’ Annual Report for the period

From 01/12/2022 (Period start date) To 30/11/2023 (Period end date)

Charity name: Bingley & Rural Men’s Shed

Charity registration number: 1201119

Objectives and Activities

SORP reference
Summary of the purposes of
the charity as set out in its
governing document
Para 1.17 The purpose of the shed is for the public
benefit of all, the preservation and protection
of good health and well-being primarily
among men aged 18 years and older living
in Bingley and the surrounding area,
including those who are employed, retired,
unemployed or have health problems,
through the provision of facilities for hobbies,
recreation or other leisure time activities,
including practical interests, skills sharing,
the learning of new skills, and helping with
community-based projects.
The shed has 15 registered members, one
of whom is a lady. The membership is
mainly comprised of retirees and members
suffering from diverse issues. The members
feel that the shed has benefited their well-
being and given them purpose.
Summary of the main
activities in relation to those
purposes for the public
benefit, in particular, the
activities, projects or services
identified in the accounts.
Para 1.17 and
1.19
The shed's purpose is to bring people
together and encourage trust in one another
so that mental health and well-being issues
can be discussed openly or between trusted
people. It also provides a place where new
friendships can be formed as workmates
and/or friends retreat due to health issues or
when retirement beckons or is reached.
As a receiving charity, one of the pillars is
giving back to the community through
community projects and empathy, such as
Remembrance Day.
The shed has members with various
degrees of knowledge, skill, ability, and
understanding. The attributes are utilised to
help other members who are interested and
willing to learn and benefit from guidance.
The shed's only activity is woodworking. This
will remain so until we can expand into other
available spaces. There has been no
demand for the shed to run any other
activities, though, through membership
surveys, there is a desire for other activities
to occur based on members' skills and
interests.
A statement confirming
whether the trustees have
had regard to the guidance
issued by the Charity
Commission on public
benefit
Para 1.18 With their best endeavours, the trustees
believe that they are delivering public benefit
through the men’s shed and its activities.

Financial Review

Review of the
charity’s financial
position at the end
of the period
Para 1.21 The shed has managed to navigate financially through its 1st
year and finished the year with a surplus.
As part of setting up the shed’s governing structure, a bank
account was set up a few days before Christmas. After the
New Year, Gift Aid was applied for, and the shed has now
received approval to claim this.
During the year, the shed received start-up grants from

Community First Yorkshire, which has allowed for the
purchase of tools and refurbish the shed.

Bradford Council Bradford VCS Alliance

Bingley Bubble. Some of these have helped with our
members' membership.
We have also had donations.

from our members themselves

Others from outside of the organisation.
Community organisations have approached us to help
deliver small projects such as the Crosses for All Saints
Church, the ramp and platform for the foodbank, hedgehog
boxes for Prince of Wales Park, and park benches for Myrtle
Park. These have all brought in donations as thanks for
delivering them to these organisations/people.
These received donations go to help with the club's
subsistence.
In summary,
Through grants and donations received, the shed has
managed to redecorate the provided stone building and
purchase woodworking equipment and hand tools

Our income for the year was £10.5k

Our expenses for the year were 7.5k, mainly due to
the establishment of the shed and the purchase of
power tools.

A surplus of 2.9k will be carried over to the following
year's accounts to help with the shed’s continued
subsistence.
The surplus comprises of unspent insurance money,
donations for community work performed and shed
membership and session fees.
Statement Para 1.22 There is no policy on how much surplus/reserve must be
explaining the carried over yearly. Carrying a small surplus into the next
policy for holding year's accounts is seen as good financial management,
reserves and ensuring that the shed can continue to operate and benefit
stating why they its members.
are held. The amount carried over may differ from year to year.
Amount of reserves Para 1.22 A surplus of 2.9k has been carried over to the next year's
held accounts to help with the shed’s continued subsistence. This
forms the initial reserve for the next financial year for the
shed.

the Bingley community. These are listed in
the Financial Review section.

Para 1.46
A description of the principal
risks facing the charity
Para 1.46 Break-ins
The shed premises have suffered multiple
break-in attempts, with the first attempt
being successful, where the shed power
tools were stolen. Through contents
insurance, the power tools have been
replaced. Unfortunately, the insurance
covered the contents only and shed finances
had to cover the bolstering of the shed’s
security to increase the difficulty of illicit
entry.
There remains a risk of persons with
breaking-in and entering intentions
continuing to try to gain access to the shed's
contents. This creates a potential financial
burden, and the shed needs to be ready to
manage any damage caused as a result.
Grants/Fundraising
Larger grants are outside the shed's scope
due to the council not granting tenure of
occupation. This now limits the shed's scope
for any future development/expansion that
the trustees would like to achieve.
Small grants are a challenge, as we were
unsuccessful with the submissions that were
made during the year. The intention is to
attend training courses and other forums to
learn what is required to be more successful.
If no small grants are obtained during the
year, that would exert quite a bit of financial
stress on the trustees and operational side.

(trust deed, royal charter)
Para 1.25 The charity is governed by a constitution
(Association type)that sets out the shed's

Para 1.25 The Bingley and Rural Men’s Shed (BRMS)

Trustee selection methods
including details of any

trustees
Para 1.25 Initially, the trustees were elected from
volunteers to their roles to initiate the
incorporation of the new shed, affiliation to
the charity commission, and establishment
of its governing constitution. Its members will
elect all future trustees at the organisation's
AGM as per the constitution. At re-election
time, all current rolled trustees are obligated
to resign and seek re-election if they would
like to continue in that capacity for another
year. Trustees are also sourced through
member nominations, and a ballot is taken if
there is more than one nominee for a role.
The trustees take on the roles of chairman,
secretary, and treasurer or as trustees with
no role (e.g., committee member).
Other roles available are membership, DPO
and Safety officer. These roles require very
little week-to-week attention and are adjunct
tasks to the treasurer’s role. Trustee
meetings take place regularly, usually
monthly.
