Side By Side Drama Group Sheffield is a registered charity incorporated organisation CIO 1201083 operating on the basis of the constitution adopted on the 1st of October 2021 Side By Side Drama Group Sheffield is a registered charity incorporated organisation (CIO) 1201083. It is a voluntary sector charity composed of trustees elected at the annual general meeting after a three year period follows: The Chair presides over meetings and acts as the public face of the organisation at events and public meetings. ## **2- Objects and Activities Of The Group**

We now run two distinct groups on different days that is Tuesdays and Fridays. In 2023/24, Side by Side Drama saw continued growth in both participation and creative ambition. Our mixed drama-for-wellbeing group expanded significantly, with over 20 performers devising Coast—our first-ever performance with a linear storyline. Previously, our shows were vignette-based, but this year participants explored a more structured narrative format, weaving together three interlinked stories: a mother waiting for her lost son, a shipwrecked crew integrating into a coastal community, and the complex realities of migration for both those arriving and those left behind. Coast was performed to wide acclaim at Sheffield’s Migration Matters Festival and in a special public showing. Participants developed new skills in storytelling, narrative structure, and ensemble performance, while continuing to build confidence, voice, and creative collaboration. In response to demand, we also launched a second women’s group focused on wellbeing, communication, and confidence. Across all groups, our holistic approach—grounded in food, safety, and community—remained central to our work.

## **THE TUESDAY GROUP**

**Objects of the group:** We offer drama and music as the springboard for a range of games and activities with the overall aims of alleviating discrimination and stigma. Our inclusive activities also improve converstional English, build self-confidence, increase wellbeing and reduce

social isolation. We promote intergration between distinct communities and with the broad UK population. Our sessions are carefully structured, starting with a shared meal. Each session begins with a simple meditation which help to create a safe space Our two facilitators Johanna Van der voort and Tom Rigby then work with physical and experimental theatre- including movement, dance, music and singing to encourage members with limited command of English and to encourage creativity. We have a variety of music and drama games, exercises and activ that lead to the creation of a performance.

**Activities of the group:** We performed this both as part of The Migration Matters Festival and The Together Too Festival at The Crucible Theatre, as well as performing various scenes from the play at other events including The Conversation Club AGM in December 2023. Our performances have been by far the most popular of our activities. Other activities have included eating together every week at the cafe on the premises where we meet, going to Chesterfield to see The Rock Choir, and a fundraiser in Totley where we collaborated with The Rock Choir.

## **THE WOMEN'S GROUP**

**Objects of the group:** These are the same as the aboveTuesday Group, but with the added element of creating a safe space for women who might otherwise not attend a mixed group for for cultural or religious reasons, and here have safe space to meet other women.

**Activities of the group:** The Side By Side Women's Group began in January 2023. They met on Fridays from 12:00hrs to 14:00hrs in The Sanctuary building which is a community hub in the centre of Sheffield that serves and supports people seeking sanctuary and refugees. Until

recently there was a regular attendance of about 25 with a further 10 or so who attend from time to time. Many of the members of The Women's Group have very limited proficiency in the English language, so we focus on activities involving learning English through drama games, speaking and listening exercises and singing. We also do meditation and welbeing exercises. We have been exploring the Seasons as we go through the year, thus providing a consistent and on going theme. The group is now really getting to know one another better, and Johanna our facilitator reports that, "this has been a joy to see." Due to popular demand we set up a second women’s group, so we now have 2 groups, 18 women in each.

## **3- Summary Of The Main Activities Undertaken For The Public Benefit**

Side By Side is a user-led community theatre group for adult asylum seekers, refugees and British/European members of the Sheffield community above the age of 18 years. Side By Side offers two hour weekly drama and music sessions. We also try have one promotional party/event per year to share our work with the community of Sheffield. At Side By Side we seek to use drama and music as a tool to increase community cohesion and strengthen bonds between different sections of the community.

Through our work (and play!) we aim to reduce social isolation and promote intergration. We use drama and music as the springboard for a range of games and activities and devising processes culminating in public performances and creative promotional events. We use Theatre to raise awareness about current issues, specifically those issues directly affecting our members, by exploring issues in workshops and devising one play a year which we show to public audiences. We also performed at local schools. During our weekly sessions, our members have the opportunity to have direct contact and experience with people they may not usually meet in their day-to-day life. This helps to alleviate discrimination and stigma as well as create opportunities for true intergration (many of our members have become firm friends and supported each other through difficult times such as visiting Side by Side members in detention). Our sessions give a safe regular meeting space where they can get to know new people and make friends in a safe and structured environment, as well as build on skills such as English, communication and confidence building. There is also focus on playfullness, well-being and creativity. The sessions are carefully structured to be gentle and inclusive beginning with a shared meal and conversation, creating space for members to make connections in a relaxed environment and practise conversational English. We then play games and do devising exercises. In this way we generate new material for our next play. Our facilitators encourage physical and experimental theatre, movement and dance in order to include memebrs with limited knowledge of English and to overcome language barriers as well as to challenge traditional theatre forms and encourage creative thinking. Our plays have so far explored current issues of discrimination and diversity, so our audiences have also had the opportunity to learn a great deal from seeing our work.

Side By side Drama Group Sheffield recieved funding during the year from The Brelms Trust, The Allen Lane Foundation and The National Lottery Community Fund. Facilitator and travel costs went up in 2024 to £9700.00 and£12452.00

from £7910.00 and £8760.00 respectively in 2023.The increase in the above costs was occasioned by the fact that Side By Side is now running two workshops a week. The main workshop is on a Tuesday and the second one is a Women's Group run every Friday and is split into two, the morning and afternoon session of which both have a high turnout. Overally, expenditure rose to £33650.00 in 2024 from £23993.00 inn 2023.

## **6- The Group's Policy On Reserves**

We do not normally have any financial obligations and our only essential need is to pay the rent for our Tuesday and Friday workshops. Our reserve policy is that we should have enough funds to enable us to pay our rent for the next 6 months, which is under £1500 per annum. This would normally be found in a dedicated Restricted Fund topped up by the Unrestricted Funds if necessary.
