## **10[th] Enfield Boys’ Brigade and Girls’ Association** ## **Annual Report 2024** ## **Our Vision and Heritage** Our Vision is that children and young people experience ‘life to the full’ through coming to know Jesus for themselves (John 10:10). All that we do as a group is focused on this, having faith in young people, providing them with opportunities to learn, grow and discover in a safe, fun and caring environment which is rooted in the Christian Faith. This has been a special year, celebrating 100 years of our Boys’ Brigade Company serving the local community as part of Winchmore Hill Baptist Church. The 10[th] Enfield Company was formed on 24[th] October 1924 and since that time has played a significant role in the lives of thousands of children and young people. This is a really significant milestone, and we are thankful to God for all that has happened over the last 100 years; and we are looking forward for all that is to come. The pictures below show some of the early days of the Company. ## **Membership** The Charity has nearly 50 children and young people engaging in weekly activities across all age groups. The **Anchors** group meets on a Tuesday evening and during the year there were 12 boys and girls in Anchors. The remainder of the **Girls Groups** (Juniors and Company) also meet on Tuesday evening and there were 7 girls in this age group. The boys **Juniors** group meets on Thursday evening and during the year there were 15 boys in Juniors. There were 15 boys in the **Company** and **Seniors** groups, which also meets on a Thursday evening. All groups run a programme including games, crafts, various other interests and a devotional time. ## **Safeguarding** Managing risk and safeguarding are obviously a high priority in the Charity and is taken very seriously. The Boys’ Brigade ‘Safeguarding Policy Statement’ and ‘Safeguarding Policy with Procedures’ have been adopted and are followed. **Assessing Risk:** Leaders are required to carry out risk assessments for all activities being undertaken. This includes: - Identifying & locating hazards - Considering who might be harmed and how - Identifying how risks are eliminated or controlled - Recording & communicating risks & control measures to everyone - Reviewing & updating as necessary In addition there is a risk assessment of the meeting space or venue being used. All leaders have access to the latest risk assessments and understand the risks/hazards identified and the control measures in place. **Leaders and Recruitment:** The Boys’ Brigade has policies and procedures in place for leaders to promote the welfare of children and young people and protect them from harm. These cover: - A ‘Safer Recruitment’ process. - Training and development of leaders (including mandatory Youth Leader Training). - A leaders’ code of conduct. - Guidance for good practice. - Guidance for challenging poor practice. - Safeguarding policies and procedures. - Ways to get advice and support. ## **Weekly Programme** As always, our weekly programmes contain a wide range of activities. In addition to regular devotional spots - finding ways into the Bible and what it has to say to all of us - activities are physically and mentally challenging and always fun. Games, crafts, cookery and many other interests. These have included making flapjacks (Juniors), holding a FIFA Tournament (Company/Seniors), creating Mocktails (Company/Seniors), celebrating Chinese New Year (Anchors/Juniors), playing Human Hungry Hippos (Juniors), taking on the Task Master (Company/Seniors) and a whole lot more. Our Juniors have recently been exploring the Parables which Jesus told including The Lost Sheep, Good Samaritan and The Parable of the Talents. In early March, in the lead up to Shrove Tuesday, all our age groups focused on the beginning of Lent, exploring the journey Jesus went on as we head towards Easter. Our Anchors have had a themed night based on Daniel and the Lions’ Den. Our Company/Seniors age group also continues to spend time exploring the Bible through their devotional times; examples of this have included: Jesus being the Light of the World, The Wise Men and the Journey they took; and The Parable of the Rich Fool. During the Summer months all age groups were able to get out and about and enjoy a range of offsite activities including games at the park, foot golf, laser quest, kayaking and adventure golf. ## **Working with the Church** Twice a year, the Company joins with other groups in the local Battalion for a Sunday Church Parade. In March the Anchors and Juniors were at Totteridge Road Baptist Church where the message was from Hebrews 12: 1-3 - about being able to run the race of life. In September we joined 120+ young people and leaders from across Enfield and Barnet for the Service at Barnet United Reformed Church. Back at Winchmore Hill in July it was great to recognise the achievements of our young people through our Annual Awards presented during the morning service. As part of the service we explored Noah's Ark - thinking about how we can be part of God's team, follow his game plan and remember his promises. In October our Annual Enrolment Service was held as part of our centenary celebrations. We were pleased to welcome some past members and familiar faces to the Church to be present at the service and share their BB memories and testimony through a video we compiled. During the service we explored The Boys' Brigade's Motto 'Sure and Steadfast' (Hebrews 6:19), and how Jesus is always there for us and is our unshakeable hope. We presented Membership Cards to current members, and celebrated our significant milestone by singing Happy Birthday and enjoying a special centenary cake. Also to mark the occasion, the Company presented 40 new Pew Bibles to the Church. Following the service there was a light lunch provided for all to enjoy as well as a collection of photos from throughout the last 100 years. It was great to share all this with current members and leaders, past members, the wider Church congregation, as well as family and friends. In November, children & young people attended the Remembrance Sunday Service, led by the Brigades. As part of this the young people and the congregation lit candles and placed them in the shape of a heart to remind us of Jesus' command "Love each other as I have loved you". This was something that we also thought about in our weekly meetings in the week leading on from this. In the afternoon our young people joined others from across Enfield for the Annual Service of Remembrance at Enfield War Memorial, which included a parade through Enfield Town to the Civic Centre. In the lead up to Christmas all age groups spent time in their weekly meetings exploring the Christmas Story, starting with Advent and the expectation of what is to come. The Anchors group going on a journey using the BB’s ‘A Baby What?’ resource, Juniors taking on a Christmas Trail leading to Jesus’ birth, and Company/Seniors exploring the journey of the Shepherds. Other Christmas themed activities included making mince pies, tree decorations and Christmas gifts. We are so grateful to Winchmore Hill Baptist Church for the help that it gives and for the use of its premises and facilities. ## **Special Events** In addition to the regular weekly meetings, members of the groups have the opportunity to take part in many special events throughout the year. Here are some examples for 2024. **January:** A very well done to our Company lads who came 1st in the BB England National Football Final. A great performance all round from the boys, who won all but one of their games (and that game was a draw). They are now through to UK Finals taking place in Scotland in April. Our Juniors had a great night at the Enfield Battalion Swimming Gala, with our B team in 3rd Place and A team in 4th Place. And our Company girls team came 4th too. **February:** A Weekend Away for our Company & Senior lads including a trip to Coral Reef Water World, Bracknell and then on to an Adventure Centre for High Ropes, Climbing and Rifle Shooting. **March:** Red Nose Day activities included a 10k run to raise money for the Church and for Comic Relief. Our Company and Seniors joined over 55 young people and leaders taking part in BB London District’s Paintball Event and enjoyed a great time. **April:** Well done to our Company lads for taking part in the BB National Football Finals in Glasgow It was a tough competition and they played some good football to get to 6th Place. As an additional treat, they enjoyed a great trip out on The Clyde with Sea Force Boat Rides, checking out some of Glasgow's sights. Our Anchors and Juniors along with 120+ from the Enfield Battalion enjoyed Legoland at Windsor. Our Juniors also had a great day at Enfield Battalion Football Academy, kicking off with a training session with Enfield Rangers coaches followed by a tournament. Well done to our teams finishing 1st and 4[th] . **May:** The Junior Girls had a bowling outing. Our Anchors and Juniors took part in the Enfield Battalion Hare & Hounds. Well done to all our boys that took part, our Anchors came 2nd Place overall and Juniors came 1[st] . Well done to our teams that took part in the Waltham Walk. 18 miles over 2 days, camping overnight and challenges along the way. **June:** Our Juniors enjoyed all the activities at Enfield Battalion Juniors Weekend Camp - Slack Lining, Soft Archery, Rifle Shooting and Climbing. And an outing to Ninja Warriors at Watford with an inflatable adventure park and the Ninja Course. Our young people had a great day at Life 2 the Max 2024 with many activities including funfair rides, inflatables, crafts and shows. Well done to all our Anchors and Juniors that took part in the Enfield Battalion Athletics & Sports. Both Anchors and Juniors age groups came 3rd and a number of our young people won individual races too. **July:** 13 of our Juniors joined in the Enfield Battalion Weekend Camp, which offered a range of activities on and offsite. Our Juniors and Company members took to the water at Aqua Action Water Park, Fairlop Waters Country Park. Our Company & Seniors lads had a great day at Thorpe Park. The 2023/24 session ended with 60+ young people and parents joining for our Summer BBQ and Games; a great time was had by all. ## **September:** A group of our Company and Seniors joined others on an Adventure Day at Phasels Wood Activity Centre taking on a range of activities and team challenges. **October:** Our Seniors had a great day at Delta Force Paintball in Upminster, playing 6 games throughout the day in 3 different zones which featured double decker buses, tanks and more. Our Anchors & Juniors joined with others from Enfield Battalion for a trip to Colchester Zoo, seeing and learning about lots of animals. **November:** Enfield Battalion Top Golf Competition. Well done to everyone that took part, but especially our Juniors who came 1[st] . Our Christmas Fayre took place alongside the Church Open Day raising over £450 for Company funds. As a Company we also supported the Firs Farm Community Christmas Event by providing some activities and raising money to buy a defibrillator for the new Community Hub. **December:** Our young people took part in Enfield Christmas Parade Of Lights joining with 60+ others from across the Boys’ Brigade in Enfield. Our annual Christmas Trailer Collection took place in the lead up to Christmas and thanks to the support of leaders, young people and parents we raised over £3,000. This was split between Company Funds and Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospice. We're pleased to have been able to support Help For Hunger this Christmas by putting together hampers for two families. Our young people and their families have donated food and other items. Members of our staff team have been helping with the sorting and distribution of hundreds of hampers to schools across North London using our minibus. ## **Annual Camps** As part of our centenary celebrations, our Summer Camp in August took us a little further afield - to Jersey in the Channel Islands. The Company has a connection to the Islands when celebrating significant milestones, having celebrated our 50[th] year by camping in Guernsey and our 75[th] year in Jersey. 11 of our boys as well as some young people from 3[rd] Enfield and 4[th] Barnet Companies joined us for the weeklong adventure. The main group of young people flew from Luton to Jersey, and the advance party (with all the kit) journeyed by ferry. The campers enjoyed a wide range of activities including coasteering at St Brelade’s Bay, Blo-karting, Ringo Rides in St Brelade’s Bay, High Ropes Course, swimming and a whole lot more. During the week our devotions were themed around the Summer Olympics, which saw us thinking about Jesus as our coach in life. The weather was excellent, the beaches fantastic and it really was a great week away, a real experience for all the young people and leaders. It was also the end of an era for three of our young people, who have grown up in the Company, as they all finished their youth journey with us, having reached 18 years of age. Together they have totalled 28 years of membership. We presented them with a special canvas with various photos, highlighting their time in the Company. It is not goodbye though as we have been pleased that two of the three have both registered as leaders and are helping on a weekly basis with the Juniors age group. Our journey to the Channel Islands though did not mean that we abandoned our summer camp venture in Norfolk, where we have set up a camp for the last 38 years. We were pleased to welcome three groups there during the school holidays. Over the years our camping equipment has increased in volume and has regularly been replaced with better quality canvas and fittings. We have long believed that the equipment should not just be for the use of our own group, but that we should allow others to benefit from it as well. These groups are very grateful for the use of our facilities as they do not have sufficient camping equipment of their own. ## **Future Plans** We are now at the start of the second century in the history of our Boys’ Brigade company. Our weekly programmes, regular outings and occasional residentials will continue to include opportunities for us to share the good news of the Bible, engaging with children and young people who otherwise wouldn’t come across the doorstep of the Church. We will continue to help them explore the Bible and provide them with opportunities to have a personal encounter with Jesus. We have faith that through their journey with us, a seed will be planted that will one day bear fruit, as illustrated in the New Testament, Mark 4: 1-20. ## **Finance** The accounts for the year ended 31[st] December 2024 show a General Account income of just under £50,000 against expenditure of just over £43,000. The Charity ended the year with funds of over £12,000. Following the purchase of a new minibus in 2022, there was an outstanding loan at the end of the year of £1,885, which will be fully repaid by the end of 2026. The Charity funds its activities through subscriptions from members (which are for membership only) and a number of fundraising events during the year. In 2024 these once again included a quiz night, a Christmas Fayre, and a Christmas street collection (which was agreed with the local authority, and was a joint fundraising effort for the Charity and for Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospice). Income is additionally received from those groups who use the camping equipment during the summer months. We are also grateful to the wider Church congregation for their generous giving as part of the Church Annual Thank Offering, all going towards paying off the purchase cost of our minibus. ## **Structure, Governance and Management** The method of appointment of the Trustees is set out in the Charity’s Constitution. The Trustees did not meet formally during the year, but were in regular contact over operational matters. The Trustees believe they have complied with their duty to have due regard to the guidance on public benefit prescribed by the Charities Commission in exercising their powers and duties. ## **Administrative Information** The Charity is registered with the Charities Commission as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (number 1201072; Constitution dated 15[th] November 2022).
