The objects of the CIO are to advance science and education through the provision of equitable access to genomics technology and related training for the public benefit (and particularly amongst scientists) in all aspects of that subject.

GetGenome provides support for scientists throughout the global south by providing training in the field of genomics and open science publishing. GetGenome’s empowerment of researchers strengthens local research capabilities and enables advancements in scientific knowledge that contribute to the global public good. GetGenome supports research across a variety of life science fields and has built valuable networks to support researchers’ learning and collaboration potential.

Summary of the main activities undertaken for the public benefit in relation to these objects (include within this section the statutory declaration that trustees have had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit)

The Trustees have taken due regard to the commission’s public benefit guidance when exercising their powers and duties as set out in the Charities Regulation 2008.

During the reporting period GetGenome has supported researchers in Tunisia and Mexico leading to enhanced capacity and the dissemination of novel science to the community. GetGenome has also engaged with training and network building in Zambia and Bangladesh during the reporting period. This work focusses on the surveillance of damaging wheat diseases in the region.

Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year

Engaged >50 researchers in genomics and open science training in Tunisia, Mexico, Zambia and Bangladesh. Provided support for the awardees-researchers to published 20 pre-print research articles within a GetGenome pre-print community. Built a network of researchers to further enhance their learning and collaboration opportunities.
