Objec3ves and ac3vi3es

The object of the Charity shall be to advance, improve, develop and maintain public educaNon in, and appreciaNon of, the art and science of music, in parNcular the art of brass band playing by any means the trustees see fit, including through the presentaNon of concerts and public events.

Public beneft

The Trustees are aware of the requirements of the ChariNes Act 2011 regarding the reporNng of the public benefit of the charity. In se[ng the charity’s objecNves and planning acNviNes, the trustees and management have given consideraNon to the Charity Commission’s general guidance on public benefit and believe that the charity meets the public benefit requirement.

The band has various acNvates that directly or indirectly help it meet its charitable objecNves.

Public performances

The band performs at a wide range of events to entertain the public. These include formal concerts, fetes and parades. Whilst all different in nature, these performances provide a benefit the local community by bringing people together to appreciate brass band music. O*en the band provide it’s services free of charge for the benefit of the local community.

Rehearsals & Tui=on

The band holds rehearsals twice a week, during these sessions tuiNon is provided to new players of all abiliNes to read music and play brass instruments. The learner classes are aimed at complete beginners, typically these groups are made up of young people from the local area. The band does however provide lessons to anyone aged 8-80. TuiNon is provided by volunteers free of charge as our aim is to be inclusive to all.

Brass Band Contests

The band prepares for and parNcipates in music contests, improving quality of performances and advancing the art of brass music for the benefit of its members and the general public.

Achievement and performance

In the period covered by this report, the objecNve of the Charity as listed above has been achieved through performances at contests, concerts and public events. Some events have been free of charge for the public to enjoy. The band has taken part in joint concerts / performances with choirs, singers and another band. This has served to bring brass band music to new audiences and strengthen collaboraNon with other musicians.

Our performances have been underpinned by an ongoing rehearsal schedule, band training and the teaching of learners in the art of Brass Band playing.

Contes=ng successes have included:

November 2022 – 2nd Place at LBBA “Open” Brass Band Contest March 2023 – 1st Place at Midlands Regional Brass Band Championships (Fourth SecNon) September 2023 – InvitaNon to NaNonal Brass Band Championships of Great Britain (9th Place) September 2023 – 2nd Place at Bolsover FesNval of Brass Entertainment Contest November 2023 – 1st Place at LBBA “Open” Brass Band Contest January 2024 - Promoted to the Third SecNon March 2024 – 1st Place at Midlands Regional Brass Band Championships (Third SecNon) The band is invited to NaNonal Brass Band Championships of Great Britain in September 2024.

Financial review

The charity showed a net surplus of £1,850 for the year ended 31[st] January 2024.

The charity currently has no formal reserves policy. The trustees expect to maintain working balance of no less than £5,000 to cover running expenses
