Report submitted to the Charity Commission
Trustee Report – The Hyndburn Food Bank
During our first year of the Hyndburn Food Bank, we have seen the need for our services grow at an accelerated rate. We currently serve over 10% of our borough, which comprises of 80,000 residents. Users of the charity must reside within the borough of Hyndburn, and this is checked by proof of address. When they sign up with us, they get added to our membership database.
Customers can visit us once a week on our opening days which consists of Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. They are allocated 10 points per week and pay a charge of £3 for their shopping. We operate as a social supermarket where customers can come and complete their own shopping and take items off the shelf, and then take their items to the cash desk, maintaining their pride and independence.
We also have a free café within our premises accessible to everyone, where they can receive free refreshments and is also utilised as a warm space during the winter months, with supported funding received from the local County Council.
We have also assisted our customers by working together with the local leisure trust as being a venue for distributing the local rounds of the Household Support Fund, where supermarket vouchers have been handed out to customers in need.
We have also worked with the local borough council and other service providers supporting those of domestic violence, Ukrainian refugees, asylum seekers, those who are homeless and anyone else who needs a bit of help, in order to not to go to bed hungry.
We have had a very busy year supporting those customers in need, and sadly we are getting even busier supporting families and supporting elderly people who need some company and just a chat with someone.
Overall, we are happy with how our first registered year as a charity has gone, and have a positive outlook for future years ahead.
