The Trustees present their statutory report for Teshie Foundation for the year ended 31 March 2024.

The report has been prepared in accordance with Part 8 of the Charities Act 2011[.]

Objects, vision and mission

Teshie Foundation is a small and highly effective charity working to alleviate poverty in Africa through three core value: Education is Key, Health is Life and Smiles are Contagious. Teshie Foundation works with local ground-based organisations who are local to their area of work

Objects

The prevention or relief of poverty, in particular but not exclusively in Ghana, by providing grants, items, and services to individuals in need and/or charities, or other organisations to assist in the provision of education and healthcare projects, and equipment for recreational pursuits, including sport, intended to bring the quality of life of the beneficiaries to a reasonable standard.

Our vision is a world of equality and sustainability driven by community led initiatives.

Mission

Teshie Foundation seeks to achieve the prevention or relief of poverty by assisting through the provision of education, healthcare and the necessary support needed to achieve this.

The Teshie Foundation believes in equal opportunities and the accessibility of fair and just human rights to all.

Governance, structure and management

Governance

Teshie Foundation is a registered charity from 22[nd] November 2022.

Teshie Foundation understands that good governance is vital to the success of the organisation. The principals of the Charity Governance Code are applied throughout the organisation with the guidance of external advisors.

Trustees

Teshie Foundation aims to attract Trustees from many different backgrounds and walks of life with relevant skills who have a genuine interest in alleviating poverty and who will bring diversity to the role. Trustees are appointed by recommendation and informal interview processing and approval by the full Board.

All Trustees give up their time freely and no Trustee remuneration or reimbursements were paid in the year or in previous years. Trustees are required to disclose all relevant interests and register them with the Chief Executive Officer and withdraw from decisions where a conflict of interest arises.

Structure and management reporting

The day-to-day responsibility for managing Teshie Foundation is delegated to its voluntary Chief Executive Officer and Chief Operating Officer

The Trustees review Teshie Foundation’s present and forecast levels of cash resource prior to approving any request for funding. All applications for funding are made annually by a formal application process and are submitted to Trustees for discussion and approval.

The management team report regularly to the Trustees, both individually and at the meetings of the Trustees which are held every three to four months. Trustees are provided with materials setting out the matters that are to be discussed at these meetings for consideration prior to the meeting. The Chief Executive Officer will contact Trustees in the interim on important matters should they arise outside of the scheduled meetings.

Safeguarding

Teshie Foundation has safeguarding measures in place for all work with young people. All project partners have to acknowledge and must adhere to as a minimum requirement of any ongoing partnership. Teshie Foundation recognises that ongoing development and monitoring of safeguarding procedures is required to continue to comply with best practice.

Public benefit

The Trustees can confirm that they have referred to the Charity Commission's guidance on public benefit when reviewing the Foundation's aims and objectives and in planning future activities and grant giving.

Activities and specific objectives

Objectives

Teshie Foundation focuses on raising funds and awareness for project activities working to alleviate poverty in Africa, specifically this year in Ghana. It concentrates on locally led ground-based projects where even limited funding makes a real impact and difference. Emphasis is placed on long term support to allow the projects to become self-sustaining where possible but recognising the need for consistent support which is vital for continuity, impact and social and economic change. Teshie Foundations core principles are as follows:

Alleviating Poverty

During the year, to achieve its charitable objectives, Teshie Foundation made grants to its projects in Ghana to support poverty alleviation goals.

Grants to Teshie Foundation's ground-based partners were as follows:

Our partnership with Akwaaba Volunteers Foundation has continued as we worked with them to engage vulnerable girls in education through participation in an afterschool netball club which also provided then with access to healthcare and education. This past year we achieved:

• 190 young people engaged in netball clubs

• 100% of participants are now enrolled in school

• 34 new participants this year

• 85% of girls attending the netball clubs are in the top 10 of their respective classes

In partnership with Volta Revival Foundation, we have supported the rescue and rehabilitation of trafficked children in the Volta region of Ghana. Over the past year this project achieved:

• 55 children supported

• All rescued children have received healthcare, counselling and education support

• All rescued children have been enrolled in school and received essential school supplies

• 500 family members have received community education to help to avoid future trafficking instances

Fundraising

Teshie Foundation's strategic fundraising plan concentrates on donor cultivation and development whilst utilising a range of fundraising opportunities.

It is recognised that various factors are currently impacting the ability to fundraise, not least the cost of living crisis and squeeze on household budgets. Teshie Foundation benefits from a broad fundraising portfolio that provides a certain amount of stability in these situations.

Due to the size and nature of Teshie Foundation, fundraising costs are kept to an absolute minimum and nearly 100% of every pound raised has gone towards charitable causes.

No complaints have been received about its fundraising activities during the year or in previous years. If any such complaint was made it would be dealt seriously by trustees.

During the year Teshie Foundation undertook a variety of fundraising events and activities:

• Fundraising from individual donors and an active major donor programme raised £1,636.51

• Trust and Foundation income was £5,000

• Income raised from corporate donations totalled £3,000

• Income raised from events totalled £428.15

Financial report for the year

Total income for was £10,064.66

After deducting the cost of raising funds of £391.64

the net income available for charitable application amounted to £9,673.02

The net income, together with reserves brought forward, funded charitable activities of £7,000

Reserves Policy

Total reserves as at 31 March 2024 amounted to £3,722.72

The Trustees have examined Teshie Foundations requirements for reserves in light of the main risks to Teshie Foundation. As a small and new charity, it is essential that a proportion of income each year remains in reserves to ensure successful fundraising the following year until a time when the charity is more established. The Trustees have established a reserves policy to protect Teshie Foundation and its long-term charitable giving programme by providing time to adjust to changing financial circumstances. The Trustees are of the opinion that the operation of the reserves policy provides sufficient flexibility to cover temporary shortfalls in income due to timing differences in income flows.

Volunteers

Being a small charity, Teshie Foundation relies heavily on the support of like-minded individuals around the world. Teshie Foundation extremely grateful for the willingness of volunteers to help with numerous tasks, such as office administration and help with events throughout the year.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our volunteers who contribute so much to our success.

Employees

Teshie Foundation is solely run by volunteers and shall continue to do so until its trustees deem it to be more financially beneficial to employ a paid member of staff.
