Achievements and performance
We are delighted to report that EMIC achieved most of its objectives during its inaugural year as a CIO. This could not have been achieved without the hard work of the inaugural chairperson, treasurer, secretary, the community development officer, contract project workers and volunteers.
The highlights of Activities are:
1. The international mother language day . This was a celebration of the diverse communities, languages and cultures. It was well attended and supported by the mayor of Canterbury and her team.
Ethnic Minorities in Canterbury CIO
2. Community space project: this was an innovative project focusing on supporting ethnic minority individuals through advice, help and signposting to services. It also helped people to know more about the cost of living help available as well as accessing employability skills. The project promoted volunteering opportunities and provided a forum for networking and friendships. Participants reported that they enjoyed the friendly welcoming environment which also reduced the social isolation. The project supported 65 people through a bespoke approach helping them to write CVs, complete forms for job application and university application, advice on language courses, job applications and looking for accommodation. There was very positive feedback which highlighted the fact that the project created a sense of community and raised awareness of available support and services locally,
3. Reaching Out: community research project: this project was a collaboration between EMIC and other organisations working with black and ethnic minority communities in Kent, Surrey and Sussex. We ran an informative session about health and social care and how to access it. This session also shared information about research and its importance and the importance of ethnic minority involvement in participation in research projects.
4. Plastic free Canterbury- working towards sustainable future: the charity supports the plastic free Canterbury initiative by encouraging diverse communities to give up single use plastic. We also promote the use of reusable cups bottles and rice recycling plates during our activities and events. This helps to encourage members of ethnic backgrounds to engage in supporting this environmentally friendly initiative led by our City Council.
5. Diabetes awareness project: diabetes is very prevalent in ethnic minorities. Our project was aimed at raising awareness of type 2 diabetes within ethnic minority groups, reducing the risks for type 2 diabetes and improving awareness of the key diabetes prevention messages. We also highlighted the importance of accessing services in a timely manner to prevent the development of complications associated with diabetes. Participants were able to understand misconceptions about diabetes and learn about the methods of prevention and self-management through healthy eating.
