whole.|Para 1.20|Between 10/11/2022 and 11/08/2023 we
made contact with neonatology colleagues in
several NICUs affected by the humanitarian
crisis in Ukraine. Most reported that the
situation with supplies and equipment
temporarily improved, and they require less
support than in 2021-2022. However, one
unit located in Mykolaiv informed us that
they are in desperate need of pulse oximeter
leads (devices that measure the levels of
oxygen in the blood).
Pulse oximeters are particularly important in
neonatal intensive care as preterm infants
require a careful titration of the supplemental
oxygen to maintain the levels within a tight
range. This is to balance helping the lungs
and protecting the retina of the eyes that can
become damaged if oxygen levels are too
high. Additionally, pulse oximeters are
crucial in diagnosis and treatment of a very
serious condition called PPHN (persistent
pulmonary hypertension of a newborn) in
term infants in NICU.
The Mykolaiv NICU were unable to obtain
these vital pieces of equipment due to a
national shortage. We also discovered that
pulse oximeter leads were exceptionally
difficult to buy in Ukraine, however, we
managed to find and supply 19 multiple-use
pulse oximeter leads to Mykolaiv.|

During the 2022-2023 period, the charity
experienced a reduction in turnover
compared to the previous year. This
decrease is attributed to the charity’s specific
mission to support neonatal intensive care
units (NICUs) affected by the humanitarian
crisis in Ukraine. As the situation in these
NICUs temporarily improved, their
immediate needs decreased, resulting in a
lower requirement for funds and a reduced
volume of equipment purchases and
supplies during this period.|
The trustees maintain regular contact with multiple NICUs in Ukraine to monitor their needs continuously. This allows the charity to respond promptly and effectively as the situation evolves, ensuring that resources are allocated efficiently and according to the most current needs. Based on the ongoing monitoring and the current financial position, the trustees have a reasonable expectation that the charity will have adequate resources to continue operating for the foreseeable future.
