Achievements and Performance

|---|---|---|
| Summary of the main achievements of the charity, identifying the difference the charity’s work has made to the circumstances of its beneficiaries and any wider benefits to society as a whole. |
Para 1.20 | Every Saturday evening during the period 10/11/22 – 31/03/24, Soul Kitchen provided support, food, toiletries and clothing to an average of 40 people per week. In addition to providing essential items, the Drop In session is able to signpost people to relevant specialist support services for mental health, substance misuse, housing and health care. Soul Kitchen ran two weekly Warm Hubs from February 2023 – April 2023 in Hoole United Reformed Church and at Lache Community Centre. These Warm hubs provided a warm, safe space and food for those struggling with the cost of living crisis. The Hubs also played a large part in reducing social isolation, and on average were attended by 35 people per week across the two venues. Soul Kitchen supported people struggling with the rise in essential living costs such as food and fuel through the provision of groceries, grocery vouchers, support with school clothing, essential household items and utility payments. This was funded by the Government’s Household Support Fund. Soul Kitchen also helped people move out of temporary accommodation and into their own properties with the provision of transport to move and with |
the provision of essential household items. Soul Kitchen supported families who were placed in temporary hotel accommodation with the provision of food, particularly during the school holiday period. From November 2023 to end March 2024, Soul Kitchen undertook a weekly walkabout every Wednesday night to check on the welfare of rough sleepers in Chester and to provide them with hot food and hot drinks, socks, hats and gloves. We also supported a number of these rough sleepers obtain accommodation during SWEP ( Severe Weather Emergency Protocol). We have continued and expanded our Soul in a Bowl project which offers cookery sessions to those who are homeless, in temporary accommodation or who have been homeless. We have introduced a second session in Chester and a new session in Ellesmere Port. We now run 3 sessions a week across the borough. The cookery sessions support the learning of cookery and numeracy skills, boost self confidence and self esteem, and encourage teamworking within the different groups. 5 members of the group have passed Level 2 Food Hygiene for Catering examinations, and 2 are enrolling for catering college. At Christmas 2022 and 2023, Soul Kitchen provided a serviced sit down full Christmas meal at the Drop In provision. On each occasion, we provided meals for 35/40 people. In addition, on Christmas Day 2022 and 2023 we delivered Christmas meals to those in temporary hotel or hostel accommodation.

Independent examiner’s report to the trustees of Soul Kitchen
I report to the trustees on my examination of the accounts of the Soul Kitchen for the year ended 31 March 2024.
As the charity trustees of the Trust you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (‘the Act’).
I report in respect of my examination of the Trust’s accounts carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act and in carrying out my examination I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act.
I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe that in any material respect:
- accounting records were not kept in respect of the Trust as required by section 130 of the Act;
or
- the accounts do not accord with those records.
I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
