Since we started UKASCC in late 2021, the mission of UKASCC, the UK Association of Supportive Care in Cancer is to implement and grow supportive care across the United Kingdom, and I must tell you that there is now a massive drive in various centres across the country to this to make this happen.

To name a few of the areas where we've made progress.

Even five years ago in the UK it wasn’t heard of , but now

everybody's talking about it and this is in recognition of the fact that, cancer treatments have advanced so much, particularly in the last 5-10 years and that means there's good news because people are now living longer even with incurable disease and more and more people are surviving cancer. There are about 2 1/2 million people living with cancer in the UK at the moment. By 2030, that will be 4,mill. By 2040, it's predicted to be 5.2 million, so the care of these people, the management of their problems they have associated with their disease and their treatments, it's becoming ever more important. I mean, it's incredible that even in the news this morning, there are new vaccines now and being tested by NHS England to try and improve the outcomes for people with cancer. It means that many people are now living with the condition as a chronic disease and many more people are actually being cured of it, so supportive care or supportive oncology, as many of us are now calling it and is has increasing relevance and importance now more than ever but in the future, this is just going to get bigger because there are going to be more and more people living with the disease.

  1. Treasurer report

This last financial year we spent the majority of our money on developing the website, which is now up and looking quite good and still needs some further work.

The other bits of money were spent on honoraria for one of the webinars that we had, but on current balance for this year and is just over 2 1/2 thousand. But we are expecting a donation of 6100.

Future spend will be getting legal advice for our contract to affiliate with MASCC. The statement is attached .

please please do so and and of course to mention there's also the MASCC conference which is in Lille, in France and that's towards the end of June 

     - c. We've had, two webinars,  Opiod induced constipation and Chemotherapy induced nausea and vomiting. They've been extremely well attended. We've had about 500 people registered for each webinar.

  - In addition UKASCC members have been involved in in writing a book, The UKASCC Handbook of Supportive Care in Cancer,  the writing of that book, is nearly complete and is due to be published by Routledge.

  2. a. Website launch has already been discussed UKASCC.org

  3. b. We have an annual conference and this year sees the fourth of those and because of the success over the years we've decided to expand it and it's going to move from a two day conference to a three day conference. It's on the 9th to the 11th of October at the Bridgewater Hall in Manchester. It is a hybrid conference, so if you can't come in person, you can join remotely. And as usual, we've got a selection of the best supportive care speakers from all all over the globe, and. And they will be talking about their areas of expertise and interest. And so would really encourage you, if you haven't already registered,

We have developed 9 workstreams.

  1. So something that's probably the closest to my heart is development of a fellowship in supportive oncology and that has been years in the making and has finally come to fruition. It's being led by Matt Carey, who's a palliative medicine consultant, and educationalist based in Oxford and the Fellowship is jointly badged UK ASCC and the Royal College of Radiologists. The aim of it is to train a new breed of cancer doctors who have skills and expertise in providing supportive oncology across the whole pathway of the disease, including survivor ship uh problems. They will be trained in the main areas of supportive oncology such as pain management, symptom control and endocrine endocrinology, bone

health, acute oncology, so that the idea is to create a breed of doctors initially, but later and other health professionals who can provide a day to day service managing the problems associated with cancer and its treatment across the whole continuum of the disease. So that's due to launch in March and we've already got some funding for Fellows to work at various centres in the UK. We already had an application for a fellow somebody from Canada, so that's really very exciting. It's a big moment for UKASCC and for all of us who work in supportive care that there actually be some recognized training.

  1. The second group is led by Victoria Hedges, also a palliative medicine consultant based in Oxford, and her interest is how we manage pain in cancer across all the different parts of the spectrum and at the moment we only really understand how to manage people's pain when they are in the last phase of their life

palliative care.

But we don't understand how to manage cancer pain for those who are living for many years with the disease, and we don't understand how to manage pain in cancer survivors.

So there's a lot of work to do, and this group is focusing on opioid therapy and how we need to revisit how we use opioids in in cancer, particularly with a focus on getting away from high doses of opioids, which can lead to the short term and longer term problems, particularly for people who are living

longer with the disease.But even also, for people who are at the end of life and that group, I mean, this is the great thing about UKASCC It's so well connected that group has got big, big names on it in the pain world and it's very exciting.

They are also going to produce a position paper which is going to be published.

  1. Elaine is leading on our education. Apart from the conference, so she helps to set up and run the webinars.

  2. Ash Armed who is my colleague here at the Christie is setting up a guidelines group which will align with the MASCC guidelines and help to produce additional guidelines for various problems in supportive oncology.

5.Dan Monnery has been extremely successful in growing enhanced supportive care.Enhanced supportive care was really the prequel to supportive Oncology. It really served its purpose in helping to get people talking about supportive care and implement some form of supportive care in their own centres. That usually started with early palliative care, but is now spreading across the whole cancer continuum.

That's a multi award winning initiative, enhanced supportive care and has demonstrated significant benefits in terms of patient outcomes and benefits to the health economy.

  1. And we're going to set up a group to set up our own form of accreditation, so that centres in the UK can apply to become UKASCC accredited. If they show that they're delivering excellence in supportive care, and that's sort of

following on from the MASCC accreditation process.
