Annual Report (April 24-25)
This has been a very busy year. Not only has the charity run several conferences and events, but also, we have had to deal with a cyber-attack on our publishers, Cambridge University Press, which slowed up production and the printing of the journal for up to half a year. The attack has not entirely dried up the appearance of new material in the journal since there is a facility for articles to be published online before their issue has been completed (called first view). Thus, the nominal backlog of articles is lower than the currently missing two issues would entail. They appear in the section on the Internet devoted to 1st view articles. As noted in previous reports, the main regular costs sustained by the association are for editorial assistance and proofreading. The proofreader is paid £140 per issue and the editorial assistant receives £450 per month. As production temporarily stopped in the middle of 2024 there have been only two payments to the proofreader in this period. But we will be returning to normal on this soon.
Since the beginning of April 2024 we have organised two major conferences and two author meets critics sessions. We are also in the process of preparing for another such session in December 2025.
The first major conference was organised on the topic of left Kantianism. The conference was put on with the help of Elisabeth Widmer of the London School of Economics who has a familiarity with the topic, especially the study of the Marburg School of Kantian philosophers. The conference took place on the third and fourth of July 2025 at Cardiff University. Many of the expenses found in our account for July onwards and earlier are attributable to travel claims and accommodation for the event. Speakers included Professor Steven Smith from Yale University and Dr. Huw Williams, Cardiff University.
The second main conference was on the political philosophies of Thomas Hobbes and Immanuel Kant held in Prague at the Anglo-American University on the 15th of October, 2025. This conference was organised with the support and help of Sylviya Lechner a professor at the University’s Political Science Department. Other speakers included, Professor Renato Cristi of Wilfred Laurier university Waterloo Canada, and Professor Oliver Eberl of the Institute of political science at Marburg University, Germany. Many of the costs were born by the Anglo-American university but there are several items in our statements which relate to travel costs of the participants and a conference meal.
The association was also able to organise on November7-8th at the London School of economics an author meets critics session with Professor Rainer Forst. The topic was his
recent book on the Noumenal Republic. Speakers included Lois McKay of Oxford University, Andrea Sangiovanni of Kings College London, and Chris Meckstroth of Cambridge University. Most of the cost was born by Cambridge London School of economics but the association also made a small subvention towards the cost. Items also appear in our returns from December-January onwards in relation to the Author Meets Critics session with Professor Paul Guyer of Brown University on his recent book on Kant’s Impact on Moral Philosophy which took place at the end of April 2025 in Cardiff University. We shall report also on this in next year’s review as many of the expenses appear only from April 25 onwards.
It is notable that over the last few years the association’s income from the publication of the journal has increased modestly against the general background of lower returns by academic journals in the period. We think the difficult environment will continue for a few more years, but we are hoping that as the effect of the backlog caused by the Internet disruption the press suffered disappears our income will nonetheless increase over the next period. The journal reaches over 6000 academic subscribers worldwide and so contributes greatly to the achievement of the Association’s main aims which is the study and discussion of the ideas of the philosopher Immanuel Kant.

Notification received in early 2025 that bank account would become subject to charges for certain transactions. Consideration was given to opening a new account but upon further review the cost of switching outweighed the benefit. A new interest-bearing deposit account was opened with Lloyds to more than offset the expected bank charges and £20,000 fund transfer made in June 2025.
HMRC notification to submit a corporation tax return for 1.6.24 to 31.5.25 (due 31.5.26) received in July 2025. SMc to review to ascertain whether further action required and confirm if similar received for prior periods.
