Achievements and Future Plans
Parent Support. Hospital Packs

Dctset in this regard
Over the next year. with the TO￿ crtrt of training at UHO, we hope* that we will be able to make further
progTess wlh getting engagement from other hospitals lo ensure that all stsff are awa￿ of the packs.
Parent Support.. Infomiation sessions & Peer Support Workshops
Introduced this year, we have hdd an in person session on Ed￿atrt￿, Care and Hearthcare plans
presented by The Rainbow Centre and attended by 15 parents and ￿ online session on early
intervention al￿ SLtpport presented by Downs Syndrome Education International attended by 48
parentslprofessionals. We saw benefft in both face to face and online trainng wrth online training
meaning that education professthals *thing th the ¥eth'NJ$ our members attend couhj join and hear
the same infomiation as parents.
In March 2024 we r8n ourfirgt parent onty peer SUPF4Yt evening which took place in a ceramic painting
afé. It was atterKled by 12 parenlslcarefs and wovthd an opportunty for attendees to talk, connect
an¢1 seek advKe in a calm environment when they Mere not also caring their children. This particular
eventworked well wrth many attenth'ng asklng wh8n Ihg r*xt one wil be and those who could not attend
exkyessing interest.
After th¢ SUCC￿ of our first parent onty peer suppori wotk3lK)p. th15 year we wlll be runnry another
ceramic paintlrKJ ￿enIng and wll discus$ parents ￿eaS for other parent only events they would
Ilke us lo organise.
We will contsnue lo be alert to loptcs on which parentg would Itke trainww and look at ways we can
provfjde the same induding, tmrt not limited to, &gnak#)g training we have already had requests
Parent Support Counselling Grants
During the cOu￿e of this year, the need for formal counselling supwt for parents has become
increa*ngly apparent. The ￿artj￿ts for sthices through the NHS are extensNe and the cost of private
therapy is prohibitive for most. Accordingty, we have launched a iyogramme of grants to assist wrth
the costs of accessing ¢wnselling. A grant from Ci>op C(4nmunty Grants has been received for this
purpose and is treated a$ restnthd fijrth.

Events.. Pre-schoolers & Saturday Club
Our Pr&Schooler5 groups are a fundamental part of the sefvices Downright Perfed provths creating
opportunities for parent peer support, commullty building and children to benèfft from playing with
each other is a safe and judgement free environment. Attendance at our groups varies bett+￿en 6 to
15 children including siblings and nKJsI atte￿1 regiJL4rfy. We have run 21 Pre-schoolers Sess￿￿5 in
this period113 from Apnl 2023 to March 20241 and 6 Saturday Club sessions.
This year we have worked hard to together themès for the sessions to gnsure that those attending
get the most out of the groups and to keep Ihem engaging. These themes have be8n carefulty put
together based on the ages of the children who attend and the drffththes that our members enwunter.
We have also tsken our Prfrschoolers on the road wth Sess￿￿$ held al the Dawd Lloyd Club in Poole
to U8e their softplay and also to Music for a sensory music sessions. These sessions have taken
ace in the aftemoons so that those t*ho cannot attend the nomial moming sessions have the
opportunity lo loin in.
During the yearwe re￿Ned feedback that there were a number of parents who would like to attend but
are not available on Mondays when ￿ sessions tske pl￿. The trustees have therefore introduced
termty Saturday Club seswcffis often w*h inwrt frcrfn professionals prowdrrwJ and movement.
We ￿an to conb.nue to run these sessi¢Jns staying alert to the nfjed3 of those attending and adapt the
8essions ac￿rd1ngty. For example. the cJJrrent cohort of children are slar*"ng to engage more with
imaginative play whKh is a key develoF¥nenl Step and we wll therefore be lookng at purchasing more
roleplay based resources for use in group$.
Events.. Day trips
During this year we have introduced day trips whKh have kncl(hJed 3 trips to a lo￿1 comrnur¥ty farm. 2
exclusive use swimming and soft pky sessions and a 'GTrnd Day Out, lo Adventure Wonderland.
These sessions nomally lake place (lurlng schrA￿ holiday$ andlor at weekends so that more people
¢an atte1￿ including Dads who we a￿ finding attend s￿rt[r￿andY lès$ than Mums.
These days OLrt are intended to create cworlunrtles whth are members mgy not otheNise have or
struggle wrth. For example, by hinng out a swimming ￿￿>01 for excluSNe use. we can limrt the numbers
in attendance to reduce the noise and cre*e a I￿gement free safe spxe.
Next year we will continue lo explo￿ dtherenl types of events as we learn whit works best for our
members. We wll also repeat the events that we have tjone previ(Ntsty that have wthed well a8 we
knthy that familiar venues and 8el ups are benefic¢al to our ￿Mbers.
Events: Friends & Family
We believ* that it is important lo Invdve whjer family and friends in our events where p)ssible. We are
aware of $ilu4lion$ where the child's dKqgnosis has rK)t been widely wled w4thin the wider famity
and where issues afound language and Understand1r￿ of D(Mn'5 Syndrome has caused problems
in families or friendship$. It is our intenlion that by inviling wider family members and fvends to
attend Some of our events rt wlll help pr￿n0t¢ I￿luSIon a￿j ￿ljersta￿anY across all of the •Jults and
olher children in their lives.
In th1$ perifx4 we have held 2 Christmas parties and 2 parties to celebrate World Down's Syndrome
Ithese are annual events but 2 have fallen within this period due to the extended accountsng period).
Trustee8 irttend to revie* the regulanty of due to the amount of time these events taka lo
organise but ￿11 to continue to organise at least one event a year which is open to wdei family and
friend8.
Community Engagement & promoting indus1￿". Education & INder Community
Befo￿ the stsrt of the Autumn s¢hooJ term in 2023 we kiunched a 'School BLK*k Pack, project which
involved our member3 nomin8tsTr9 their child's schwl to receive a pack of ficI￿n lkn)ks whKh feaiufe
characters wrth DfY•vn's Syndrome. The aim ofthis woject W83 to ensure that there are books available

in all of our members classr(￿m$ wth charactws like them and to provhle teachers wilh a basis on
which to discuss Down's Syndrome other pupils. Wth the pad( we also provhled ￿llets on the
importance of using the correct language around D{14￿.$ Syndrome and a poster for their staff room on
the same. We also included a Jelterwith a offerfor us to delNera talk to staff on key iSSLres $urround*ng
Down's Syndrome.
Th8 uptake from parents was good with 22 pack5 being requested but to date we have only had o
request for a talk whth we have delivered and wtwch was very well receivgd.
We have also pr￿uced and deliVe￿d a talk to a local Care Homg have subswjenty norrynaled
s lo be their chty of the year.
We continue to accept nominations and will gwe rt fo¢us in advance of the start of the sch¢)ol year in
September. This year our focus i8 going lo ￿ on eroagement medical profsssionals but WIN
continue to consider ways to increase engagement wiéh educth.onal setbngs.
Community Engagement & promoting inclusion.. Medical
Save for agreements to dtstr￿ute our New Parent Hosprtal Packs, we have fwnd rt difficutt to obtain
er￿gement trom medical wofessionals and yet we continue to receNe reports from our members of
the use of inappropriate language. diagnostic overshadvwing and negative experience$ surrounding
diagnosis. Duiing tt)e early stages, these experiences can frame the parents, atbtude and feelings
towards their Ghild's diagnosis and clear that our l(*al medtal profes$r)nals would ￿nefft from
considering a parents perspectlve.
We have very reCen￿Y obtalned a commitment from the Head of MithrFery at University Hospitals
Dorsel for them lo engage wtth us and for us to provth training lo staff on an annual ba*$. In the
torthcoming year we will be focusing of producin9 a wality session for medical professionals on the
pargnts perspective ol ￿el￿n9 their child's diagTr)sis of D(Mfn'$ Syndrome and we will then be offer¢ng
this training lo other ho$￿'talS and medtsl seth'ngs.
Supporting Development: Financial Grants
Another key element of our support services 1$ ￿ offer of fnanci81 grants to membors lo a88i$I with
the costs of acce881ry speci81ist reswrces and therap￿.
In this perkjd the trustees agreed to a sum of £300 per grant aKI 13 grants have been given In this
perk)d {9 within the financkgl year).
This year we intend lo continue offering these grants whkh help parents to support their child'$
development. Trusteo WMI revie* level of grant arKI c￿$1¢•r rf the level can be maintained or
ncreased.
Supporting Development.. Early Development Groups

Feedback
This year we have introduced event specffj￿ feedback fomjs as VAI as more general feedback forms
to enable people to gbVÈ us feedback on the support we offer as a whole. These fomis can all be
completed antsnYn￿usty to en¢Lwrage people lo give both posth've and negative feedback wherever

Financial Review
The accounts filed are for the period 2 November 2022 to 31 March 2024 as a result of ourconversion
to a Charitable Incorporated Organisation.
Our accounts forthis period showthe transfer of funds from the previous charity 1159214 of £33,473
on S April 2023 a5 approved by the tharity Commission.
When deciding upon the financial strategy for the year, the trustees kept in mtnd three key
considerations. First, with the charity hawn8 become inartive until May 2022 and emba￿l￿g on a
relaunch with a new team in pla￿, the trustees recognised that raising funds with no followin&
reputation, contacts or actounting records it would be challenging to raise funds from lundrèisin&
donations or grants. Se￿nd. Ltrpon taking overthetnjstees received very little in the way of resources
and it was therefore anticipated that resour￿ and equipment would need to be purchased to enable
the tharity to meet its objectives. Third. in order to work out what forTns of support our beneficlarles
need, there would be benefrt In trialling different projerts some of which would require additional
costs to set up.
Having regard to the above conslderations. at the bew"nning of the period the trustees set a budget
anticipating a c.£13k loss; however. our acrval loss has been £4,182. Thetrnstees have been delighted
that income of £14k has been received rather than the anticipated £4k whlch has been a result of a
number of successful grant applications and the generosity and support in fundraisinB effort5 from
the charlties beneflclades.
There Is still work to be done to Increase awareness of the charity In our local community but this
financial period has shown us the potential finanoal security of the charity achieved with the current
strategy of buildin8 member and community support as well as seeking grant support for speciflc
projects.
Policy on reserves
During thi8 year the Charity ttas maintained a Reserves Policy expSaming thal res￿48¥ of £8,845 are
kept being the basic costs ol yoviding our core 8eTvKes for 12 M￿th8.
The Charty 18 currentty holding £25,015 being £16.170 more than our current Reserves Policy. In view
of our plans to estsblish fom)al Earty Deve10Frfr￿7I Groups, which will involve Set up costs and costs of
regularfy paying professiona Iherapsts, Ihe trustees have taken a wiservative approach to spending
in anticipation of these increased costs. Once the trustees know what these costs will be, the Reserves
Policy wll be reviewed lo reflect Ihese Ir￿rease￿ operab.ng costs and the reseNe$ posthon reviewed
generally.

## **Independent examiner’s report to the trustees of Downright Perfect, charity number 1200893**

I report to the trustees on my examination of the accounts of Downright Perfect (the CIO) for the year ended 31 March 2024.

## **Responsibilities and basis of report**

As the charity trustees of the CIO you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (‘the Act’).

I report in respect of my examination of the CIO’s accounts carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act and in carrying out my examination I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act.

## **Independent examiner’s statement**

I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe that in any material respect:

1. accounting records were not kept in respect of the CIO as required by section 130 of the Act; or

2. the accounts do not accord with those records.

I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
