Purpose
The objects of the CIO are to establish and run a community centre and recreation ground and facilities ancillary thereof and to promote for the benefit of the inhabitants of the Parish of Charlton Adam and Charlton Mackrell and the neighbourhood thereof ( “area of benefit” ) without distinction of sex, sexual orientation, age, disability, nationality, race or political, religious or other opinions the provision of facilities for recreation or other leisure time occupation of individuals who have need of such facilities by reason of their youth, age, infirmity or disablement, financial hardship or social and economic circumstances or for the public at large in the interests of social welfare and with the object of improving the conditionsof life of the said inhabitants (the “Objects”).
Our Work
Over the period 2019 until 2003 we built a play space and sensory garden at a cost of £140,000. In so doing we have created a space in the heart of the village where local people of all ages can meet, socialise, play and enjoy our wonderful 7acre memorial playing field.
In 2024/25 we have developed plans to replace the roof, install double gazed windows, solar panels and new fire doors, an accessible entry and area specific heating solutions across the building. We are in the process of fundraising for this and have so far raised £20,000 in specific grants towards these purposes and have applied to the Big Lotter Community Fund.
The Trust operates a Community Centre incorporating

a. a seven-acre field with inclusive play equipment, sensory garden, a basketball shooting area, a tennis court, football pitches and a variety of benches and picnic tables which is accessible and available 24/7, 52 weeks a year for the whole village and local area.

b. A hireable community building which comprises a sports hall, toilets, changing rooms and showers, a kitchen and an upstairs meeting room. These are used by sports clubs, local groups and the Trust for fundraising activities and families for weddings, children’s parties, funeral wakes etc.

c. A youth club which meets weekly in termtime offering activities and emotional
support to the young people who attend.

d. Regular community cafes.

e. Football pitches and changing and refreshment facilities for our resident football club and supporters.

f. A keep fit class held twice weekly on the field which is accessible to mothers with small children as the children can play on the play equipment whilst their mothers’ exercise. Older villagers also use the class.

g. A bi-monthly newsletter which is delivered to every household in the villages of Charlton Mackrell and Adam which operate as one village” The Charltons”.

h. A website https://www.charltons community.org providing information about activities and booking facilities.

i. A village email group open to all villagers which circulates useful information about events etc in the villages.

j. Regular fund raising, fun events such as Village Day, Party in the Park, live music events, jumble sales, games evenings, village cafes which improve the social cohesion in the villages.

k. Much appreciated level dog walking facilities with free parking which enables many older and disabled dog owners to be able to walk their dogs
Approximately 500 people use the hall and field over the year with 31,000 individual visits.

We are hopeful that our application to the Community Fund will be successful thus enabling us to progress the work outlined in a previous paragraph. We will continue to raise funds directly assisted by the licensing of the premises and to apply to other funders as and when the opportunities are available. We are fully committed to ensuring that our legacy will be a sound building with appropriate facilities for the future.
