Rooting for Andover annual report for the period to 30th April 2023
Objectives, governance and structure
Rooting for Andover supports allotments and community gardens in the Test Valley area. We hold regular volunteer days at our main garden at Poppy Park next to the Augusta Park Community centre. Throughout the year, we hold a variety of community events in the garden which are advertised on social media. We are open to all and everyone is welcome.
We are a Charitable Incorporated Organisation set up using the Charity Commission’s Foundation Governing document. We have three trustees and appointments of trustees follows the model process set out in our governing document. Our charitable aims are described in the same document and can be viewed on the Charity Commission site. Broadly we aim to provide, for public benefit, facilities for community gardens for all members of the community in the Test Valley. We also aim to provide opportunities for learning about sustainable horticulture and community gardening. We provide a great place for people to meet, to enjoy green spaces and to enhance their knowledge and understanding of all aspects of horticulture as well as contributing free surplus food to those in the local community who might need it. The trustees are fully aware and always seek to comply with the Charity Commission’s guidance on public benefit.
This first report only covers the period from registration as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation in October 2022 to the end of the financial year on 30th April 2023. Rooting for Andover was previously a charitable not for profit company limited by guarantee (Rooting for Andover Ltd). Residual assets of Rooting for Andover Ltd were transferred to the CIO during this period.
Achievements and performance
Our very successful and well attended bi and tri weekly volunteer sessions were well supported. We had a ‘raised bed workshop’, undertook some local fruit tree planting and ran a hugely well attended Easter event which attracted crowds of local residents.
Thanks to the earlier work with volunteers from the local Round Table, we completed works on our wonderful pond and saw a definite increase in wildlife as a result.
We installed new benches so that we had a better social and learning space for some of our more formal activities.
All of our activities during this period were either free or required only a small token payment as we understood the financial pressure many families were under. Estimating how many beneficiaries we have is difficult but our popular events often attract hundreds of residents and our Facebook group where we share information has over 600 members.
We worked extensively with the NHS on a successful ‘Healthy Andover’ project and attended their public events with various planting activities which were popular with adults and children alike.
Several local Councillors were welcomed to our garden and we are grateful both to them, officers of Test Valley Borough Council and the local Community Centre for their help and support.
We are also grateful to a grant received from Gamma Aviation during this period.
The Charity’s events were advertised on our website which is currently https://rootingforandover.org.uk as well as our Facebook page.
Finance
We normally strive to achieve around 6 months reserves which the trustees feel is a safe margin given our annual costs. Most of the funding we receive is related to project work but we aim to have between £900-£1000 in reserves which is our best current estimate
of our 6 month running costs. At the end of the financial year, the charity was in a strong financial position and is a going concern.
