CHAIR’S STATEMENT

If last year was the year we proved our model could work, this year was the year we started to build something bigger around it.

Grounds for Growth

The most significant step forward this year was the summer launch of the ‘Grounds for Growth’ campaign. Working in partnership with ERA92, we made the decision to focus the Foundation’s entire fundraising effort on a single, ambitious goal: establishing a barista and hospitality academy in one of Kampala’s poorest communities, and taking another group of young HatHats’ team members to Uganda in the summer of 2026 to help bring it to life.

ERA92 are a Ugandan social enterprise who specialise in creating employment pathways for young people in some of the country’s most underserved communities. Their deep roots in Kampala and understanding of the city’s informal settlements made them the natural partner for what we are trying to build.

This ambitious plan was not a decision taken lightly. It means channelling everything we raise towards one purpose, and asking our team and customers to get behind something that will take real commitment. The work we do in the coffee growing communities around the world should be built to last, not carried out in short bursts. A proper academy, training young people from the most deprived communities in Kampala in real barista and hospitality skills, is a genuinely life-changing intervention and will give generational support to their families as they graduate to work in the fast growing tourist economy. The Grounds for Growth campaign is how we get there.

The board also agreed this year to formalise the Foundation’s work in East Africa. We have invested in legal and advisory work in country to make sure the work we are doing is protected with the correct structures and that the investment we make through Grounds for Growth is channelled correctly with accountability. The trustees felt proper protection legally and structurally was the right thing to do before we go further.

The Latree Campaign

In May of this year, the Foundation worked alongside HatHats Coffee Company on a project that brought together our commercial and charitable ambitions in a way that felt completely natural to who we are. Through the Latree campaign, we planted 15,000 coffee trees in school gardens across Uganda. Those trees are not symbolic. They help create closed loop sustainability. Through our partners on the ground, the beans are brought back to the UK, roasted and now sold as the hospitality coffee at Discovery Park, the science and innovation campus in Sandwich, Kent, home to over 150 businesses including global pharmaceutical company Pfizer.

It is a closed loop. The trees feed the harvest, the harvest generates an income, and that income flows back to the schools and communities who grew the coffee. We are genuinely proud of this model and we think it is one of the most honest expressions of what the HatHats Foundation is trying to do.

Community Grants

Closer to home, the Foundation continued its grant programme in the towns and communities where HatHats Coffee trades across Kent and the South East, including Canterbury, Whitstable, Herne Bay, Folkestone and Sandwich. Funds were awarded to a range of causes the trustees felt reflected

our values and the needs of the people around us. This year the grants supported breakfast clubs for children whose families are struggling to make ends meet, contributions towards SEND sensory rooms for young people with additional needs, Cancer Research fundraising efforts, a donation to Pilgrims Hospice fundraising wing walk, and support for local mental health groups. The grants are modest but they go to the right places and they make a real difference to the people involved.

We are grateful to everyone who applied, and I want to acknowledge the trustees who take the time to consider each application properly.

ReDiscovery Partnership

Our partnership with ReDiscovery, the charity shop based at Discovery Park in Sandwich, moved from early conversations into something much more substantive this year. The values alignment between our two organisations is clear, and we have found genuine common ground in how we think about community, sustainability, and what it means to do good business. We look forward to continuing to develop that relationship in the year ahead with some exciting fashion shows and pound sales raising funds for the charity in the pipeline.

The Board

We were pleased to welcome Hannah Woodgate to the board this year as employee representative from HatHats Coffee Company. Having a voice from within the team sitting at the trustee table matters to us. It keeps us connected to the people who raise the money and do the work, and it reflects our belief that the Foundation belongs to the whole business, not just its leadership.

As always, thank you to our customers, our team, and everyone who has supported us this year. What we are building is long-term, and it takes people who are willing to invest in something they may not see the full return on for years. We are grateful for your trust.

We look forward to continuing to ‘Make wonderful things happen’.

TRUSTEES' ANNUAL REPORT FOR THE YEAR ENDED 30TH SEPTEMBER 2025

The Trustees of the HatHats Foundation ('the Foundation') present their annual report and financial statements for the year ended 30th September 2025.

The Foundation was incorporated at Companies House as a Charity Incorporated Organisation and registered as a charity with the Charity Commission on 21st October 2022.

Relationship with HatHats Coffee Company Limited

In 2023, HatHats Coffee Company Limited granted the term of its Grant Funding Agreement with the Foundation for a five year initial period. The donation for the year to 30th September 2025 was anticipated to be around £12,500 which was given in kind and largely used on consultancy, marketing as well as staff costs. HatHats Coffee Company Limited also entered into a Commercial Participation Agreement with the Foundation for an initial period of five years. This agreement enables HatHats Coffee Company Limited to raise funds through the sale of certain products from which it would donate certain proceeds to the Foundation and otherwise through fundraising from HatHats’ employees and members of the public.

Fundraising Approach

The Foundation's approach to fundraising is to predominantly use the relationship with HatHats Coffee Company Limited, its employees and customers to raise funds through the sale of products or fundraising activities. We do not carry out street fundraising, nor do we undertake fundraising mail shots or telephone canvassing.

We work with HatHats Coffee Company Limited to ensure any fundraising they do for the Foundation complies to recognised best practice standards. Fundraising is monitored by the trustees of the charity, and we also monitor any fundraising complaints (none were received during the year) and always seek to protect the public, including vulnerable people, from unreasonably intrusive or persistent fundraising approaches, or undue pressure to donate.

Structure, Governance and Management

Governing Document

The Foundation established the charitable objects and powers of the Foundation. In the event of the Foundation being wound up the members of the CIO have no liability to contribute to its assets and no personal responsibility for settling its debts and liabilities.

Recruitment and Appointment of the Board of Trustees

Trustees were appointed to the Foundation to ensure that the Board includes experience in financial, legal and other relevant fields.

Trustees are aware of their obligations in law as Trustees and are encouraged to acquaint themselves with publications and guidance available from the Charity Commission.

The Trustees serving during the year were as follows:

Trustees:
L Hurst (Chair) 21st October 2022
A Syson 21st October 2022
A Brightley-Hodges 21st October 2022
J Watson 21st October 2022
G Pain 21st October 2022
R Carnac 21st October 2022
H Woodgate 17th April 2025

Throughout the year, the trustees paid Anita Brightley-Hodges and her associates a fee of £150, to generate a report and, begin a feasibility study in a project the charity wished to explore with the working title Acres Of Good.

Organisational Structure

The Board of Trustees meet at least four times a year and oversees finance, current project work and the future strategy of the Foundation as well as considering community grant applications.

Principal Risks and Uncertainties

The Trustees have examined the major strategic, business and operational risks which the Foundation faces and confirm that systems have been established to enable regular reports to be produced so that the necessary steps can be taken to mitigate these risks.

The three risks that would have the highest impact to the model of operation that the Foundation has are a decrease in income received and the quality of the delivery of projects with project partners in the UK and overseas and safeguarding.

While the Foundation does not plan to build or operate any of the projects which it has funded, cases of misconduct by staff of our delivery partners on or off Foundation projects could result in reputational harm for the Foundation. The Foundation has created a safeguarding policy this year to mitigate against this risk.

Objectives and Activities

The Foundation's aims are to make wonderful things happen in the communities it works with, either by giving grants to community projects around HatHats Coffee’s stores or the prevention and relief of poverty and the advancement of health, education and the environment of coffee-growing communities around the world.

In the consideration of projects, the Trustees have due regard to the Charity Commission's guidance on public benefit. The Trustees always ensure that the projects undertaken are in line with the aims
