CHAIR’S STATEMENT

This year marked a clear shift for the HatHats Foundation from setup to delivery.

We began the year with a major step forward: a team of ten HatHats Coffee’s staff travelled to Uganda to deliver our first full-scale overseas project. The group worked directly with students at Uganda’s first vocational training college, teaching barista skills designed to help them access employment in the country’s growing hospitality sector. It was focused, practical support with immediate value.

While in Uganda, the team also delivered donations to a local school and visited a remote coffeegrowing village where we had funded the drilling of a borehole. Seeing children drink from open dirty water sources was hard to witness. Watching those same children access clean safe water for the first time brought home the impact of the work we’re doing.

The Uganda project was fully funded by staff-led fundraising, with the Foundation providing the structure and support to make it happen. It was a clear example of our model working as intended.

In the UK, the Foundation continued its community grant programme across the HatHats Coffee’s store network. Funds were awarded to a range of local causes including homelessness support over Christmas, volunteer-led public space improvements in Herne Bay, and redecoration work on a children’s ward in Ashford. These were small-scale but targeted grants where we could see a direct benefit to the community.

Sales of the Invisible Latte continued to provide a reliable income stream, and we maintained a steady flow of donations throughout the year. This has given us the financial foundation to plan the next phase of our work without overreaching.

Towards the end of the year, discussions began with Discovery Park, a local science park based in Sandwich, Kent about the Foundation working in partnership with their onsite charity shop, ReDiscovery. There’s clear alignment in values and we see real potential for collaboration.

As always, thank you to those who supported us this year. From customers to colleagues to community partners, your backing has helped us move from intention to impact.

We look forward to continuing to ‘Make wonderful things happen’

TRUSTEES' ANNUAL REPORT FOR THE YEAR ENDED 30TH SEPTEMBER 2024

The Trustees of the HatHats Foundation ('the Foundation') present their annual report and financial statements for the year ended 30th September 2024.

The Foundation was incorporated at Companies House as a Charity Incorporated Organisation and registered as a charity with the Charity Commission on 21st October 2022.

Relationship with HatHats Coffee Company Limited

In 2023, HatHats Coffee Company Limited granted the term of its Grant Funding Agreement with the Foundation for a five year initial period. The donation for the year to 30th September 2024 was anticipated to be around £10,500 which was given in kind and largely used on consultancy, marketing as well as staff costs. HatHats Coffee Company Limited also entered into a Commercial Participation Agreement with the Foundation for an initial period of five years. This agreement enables HatHats Coffee Company Limited to raise funds through the sale of certain products from which it would donate certain proceeds to the Foundation and otherwise through fundraising from HatHats’ employees and members of the public.

Fundraising Approach

The Foundation's approach to fundraising is to predominantly use the relationship with HatHats Coffee Company Limited, its employees and customers to raise funds through the sale of products or fundraising activities. We do not carry out street fundraising, nor do we undertake fundraising mail shots or telephone canvassing.

We work with HatHats Coffee Company Limited to ensure any fundraising they do for the Foundation complies to recognised best practice standards. Fundraising is monitored by the trustees of the charity, and we also monitor any fundraising complaints (none were received during the year) and always seek to protect the public, including vulnerable people, from unreasonably intrusive or persistent fundraising approaches, or undue pressure to donate.

Structure, Governance and Management

Governing Document

The Foundation established the charitable objects and powers of the Foundation. In the event of the Foundation being wound up the members of the CIO have no liability to contribute to its assets and no personal responsibility for settling its debts and liabilities.

Recruitment and Appointment of the Board of Trustees

Trustees were appointed to the Foundation to ensure that the Board includes experience in financial, legal and other relevant fields.

Trustees are aware of their obligations in law as Trustees and are encouraged to acquaint themselves with publications and guidance available from the Charity Commission.

The Trustees serving during the year were as follows:

Trustees:
L Hurst (Chair) 21st October 2022
A Syson 21st October 2022
A Brightley-Hodges 21st October 2022
J Watson 21st October 2022
G Pain 21st October 2022
R Carnac 21st October 2022

Throughout the year, the trustees paid Anita Brightley-Hodges and her associates a fee of £3,000, to generate a report and, begin a feasibility study in a project the charity wished to explore with the working title Acres Of Good.

Organisational Structure

The Board of Trustees meet at least four times a year and oversees finance, current project work and the future strategy of the Foundation as well as considering community grant applications.

Principal Risks and Uncertainties

The Trustees have examined the major strategic, business and operational risks which the Foundation faces and confirm that systems have been established to enable regular reports to be produced so that the necessary steps can be taken to mitigate these risks.

The three risks that would have the highest impact to the model of operation that the Foundation has are a decrease in income received and the quality of the delivery of projects with project partners in the UK and overseas and safeguarding.

While the Foundation does not plan to build or operate any of the projects which it has funded, cases of misconduct by staff of our delivery partners on or off Foundation projects could result in reputational harm for the Foundation. The Foundation has created a safeguarding policy this year to mitigate against this risk.

Objectives and Activities

The Foundation's aims are to make wonderful things happen in the communities it works with, either by giving grants to community projects around HatHats Coffee’s stores or the prevention and relief of poverty and the advancement of health, education and the environment of coffee-growing communities around the world.

In the consideration of projects, the Trustees have due regard to the Charity Commission's guidance on public benefit. The Trustees always ensure that the projects undertaken are in line with the aims and objectives of the Foundation.
