Summary of the objects of the charity set out in its governing document

1) THE ADVANCEMENT OF THE ARTS FOR THE PUBLIC BENEFIT FOCUSING PRIMARILY BUT NOT EXCLUSIVELY ON THE ART OF DRAMA, WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO RE-INTERPRETATIONS OF MYTH AND THE CANON; AND 2) THE PROMOTION OF EQUALITY

Summary of the main activities
undertaken for the public
benefit in relation to these
objects (include within this
section the statutory
declaration that trustees have
had regard to the guidance
issued by the Charity
Commission on public benefit)
AND DIVERSITY FOR THE PUBLIC BENEFIT BY EDUCATING AND
INCREASING AWARENESS OF ISSUES RELEVANT TO WOMEN OR
LGBTQ+ PEOPLE, PARTICULARLY BUT NOT EXCLUSIVELY BY
PROMOTING THE PRODUCTION AND PRESENTATION OF WORKS
OF DRAMA BY WOMEN AND LGBTQ+PEOPLE.
Several activities were undertaken by the CIO during this period for the
public benefit in line with the objects of the charity. The first, in late 2023,
was the production and release of a 4-episode podcast series named
Mythcrashers. This podcast discussed storytelling and adaptation in
relation to four distinct myths from different traditions. The podcast
specifically engaged with retellings that centred women and/or LGBTQ+
people and showcased new writing by women.
Also in late 2023, the CIO hosted Carbon Literacy Training for small
theatre companies to increase the sustainability of theatre-making in the
UK.
In 2024, the CIO applied for and secured approx. £25,000 of funding from
the Open University’s Open Societal Challenges scheme to pursue a new
theatre project focusing on myth and the environment. Several workshops
were held in the later part of 2024 to begin developing this work, including
identifying key themes and participants, primarily women and LGBTQ+
artists.
Throughout the period of this report, the CIO maintained a suite of free-to-
access resources on YouTube and SoundCloud, including recordings of
previous productions, companion podcasts, and discussion sessions. The
CIO also maintained a social media presence on Twitter (now X) to
continue engaging audiences with our content, and developed specific
content for paying supporters on Patreon including behind-the-scenes
updates and an exclusive supporters’ event in the form of a live play
reading.
Trustees have had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity
Commission on public benefit.

Section D Achievements and performance

The charity’s biggest achievement in this period was the award of approx. Summary of the main £25,000 in grant funding from the Open University. This will facilitate the achievements of the charity creation of a new piece of theatre as well as a workshop programme, to during the year engage audiences with mythic storytelling, climate change, and specifically to promote new work created by women and LGBTQ+ people. This money will be awarded in several stages, including in the next financial year. Development of this project is underway and shows promise to engage audiences in the hundreds around the UK. The charity maintained a social media following of over 1400 followers on Twitter/X and over 250 followers on Instagram. Our presentation of Here She Comes , a poetic retelling of Euripides’ Bacchae by SJ Brady, has been played on YouTube and SoundCloud over 500 times. Episodes of the Mythcrashers podcast had been played over 130 times.
