Boomerang’s Pet Foodbank exists to ensure that no pet goes hungry due to their owner’s financial circumstances. We support a wide network of trusted community organisations—including foodbanks, community pantries, churches, and welfare agencies—who assess need and distribute pet food directly to those facing hardship.
We currently serve the whole of Suffolk, as well as parts of Essex, Cambridgeshire, Norfolk, and Hertfordshire. Our network of collection and partner points includes Haverhill, SaffronWalden, Bury St Edmunds, Newmarket, Sudbury, Ipswich,Felixstowe, Braintree, Halstead and Sudbury, with plans to further expand our reach asdemand grows.
This year we tried ‘Pantries’ in Haverhill to offer pet food direct to owners that is notsuitable for distribution through other agencies. Members of the public can make a recommended donation in exchange for pet food offering them an economical means of feeding their pet. These 30 minute pop-up pantries have been very well supported and we plan to visit more locations as we grow.
By working in partnership with frontline organisations, we ensure our support reaches those who need it most, while respecting their privacy and dignity.
Boomerang’s Pet Foodbank is powered entirely by volunteers. From warehouse operations and stock management to delivery, events, and outreach, our team of dedicated individuals is the backbone of our charity. Over the last year, our volunteer base has grown by over 300%, reflecting the increasing community engagement with our cause. Each volunteer receives training and is well supported resulting in a high level of retention. We are deeply grateful for every volunteer who gives their time and energy to help pets and their people through difficult times.

The ongoing cost of living crisis has continued to drive up demand for our services. Pet owners are facing unprecedented pressure from rising food costs, soaring energy bills, and housing insecurity. In response, we have increased the volume and reach of our distributions by working closely with a growing number of partner agencies. We are grateful to receive generous support from members of the public, from pet food manufacturers, as well as larger organisations such as the RSPCA and Blue Cross. As a Foundation Charity with Pets (formerly Pets at Home), we benefit from regular pallet donations of pet food, which are crucial in sustaining our day-to-day operations. Through these partnerships, we not only provide emergency relief but also help preserve the vital companionship pets offer. We work to protect the emotional and mental wellbeing of pet owners by helping to preserve the bond between people and their pets during times of personal crisis. This vital support also helps to reduce the number of owners faced with the difficult decision of delaying veterinary treatment or relinquishing their pet as a last resort.
The charity has had a successful year and experienced year on year growth in income allowing us to continue to develop our services and meet increasing demand.
For the year ended 31 August 2024, the charity generated total income of £23,330 with operating costs of £25,469, resulting in deficit of £2,139. The policy to hold reserves is to ensure that sufficient funds are available for the smooth and ongoing running of the charity throughout future years. We organised several fundraising events across the year to generate income and increase community engagement which has led to a growing base of supporters.

This year saw a tenfold increase in our rent expenses, driven by the sharp rise in demand for our services. As the charity grew rapidly to meet this need, we required significantly more storage space to manage the volume of pet food and supplies being distributed. This expansion necessitated moving to larger, more costly premises. Thankfully, we have now secured a long-term home that not only meets our current operational needs but also provides the capacity to accommodate projected growth going forward. Boomerang’s Pet Foodbank is committed to collaborative working. We continue to strengthen relationships with community groups, charities, and referral agencies, ensuring holistic support for those in crisis.
Everything we achieve is made possible by our volunteers and the incredible generosity of the public, local and national businesses. Their continued support is the reason we can confidently move forward with our mission: Let no pet go hungry.
