WORSHIP REPORT
St Nicholas'5 Cha
Regular services at St Nicholas's chapel continue. providing BCP Holy Communion on Sundays at
8am and a midweek (Wednesday mornings) Common Worship Holy Communion for th¢ whole
benefice. Simon Newham celebrates on each 2 Sunday, and a valued team of retired cler8y
(Felicity, Boot. Richard Elliott, Gordon Wynne and lain MO￿lson) celebrate on Wednesdays.
Stephen Bennett also celebrdtC5 on Sundays. particularly in Terence's absence.
The chapel is also now advertised as open to all for silent prdyer when Emily is in thé office.
Excitingly. the chapel has been used for the interdenominational C1w￿lIan1¢Y Erplured cours¢, and
will be used on Monday. Tuesday and Wednesday of Holy W¢¢k and on Easter Evc, for
interdenominational meditstion and intercessiors using the Week of Pray¢r for Christian Unity
resources, dnd the Easter Ceremonies on Easter F.ve.
St John's Boldre
Worship continues in its accustomed pattem:
i il and 3rd Sundays.. Lhoral Matins
4th Sundays: Choral Evensong
2nd 4th and 5 Sundays: Eucharist
The usual 'specials' have took place last year - the Africa service. Hood service, the Crib Service.
the service in which we celebrale our link with Si Philip's. Sydney (af which we wcre blessed by a
visit by Di Strathdee), 'Married at Boldre,. the blessin8 of animals in October. Remembrance
Sunday - and we were delighted that Fleur (and Jill Bulkley) were able and willing to join us on
Christmas Eve and Palm Sunday. All Souls. (Kcmcmbran¢¢) and Advent sern'ices took place at St
Mary's this year.
The unrYpeat8ble highltght of 2024 was the William Gilpin tri-centenary Matins on June, with
one of his sermons read by Chris Knox (wearing 18th ¥entury preaching bands) and accompanied by
the Milford West Gallery Quire and the church choir. conducted by Timothy Rice.
More chalice assistants have been recruited. and Sandy Walford has recruxted and organI￿d the
provision of intercessors. reader& welcomers and now chalice assisLgnts very etyiciently.
Chris Knox preache5 on 181 Sundays, and we hai'e had a visit fn)m Michael Hampel. the Sub Dean
of Durham Cathedr81 this year to preach about Shakespeare after our reading of Twelfth Night in
January. as well as the usual naval chaplain's sernion for the HMS Hood Memorial Service last
year. We are grateful to the retired clergy who worship with us. and those who lead servic¢s from
time to time. Simon NeTh'ham preaches and presides on the 2￿4 Sunday of each month, and leads
Evensong on the 4th Sunday of each month.
Be115 are rung befor¢ service5 on Sundays and weddin8s, and are hugely appreciated. Thanks to
Carol Edge and her team for providing this very important part of the worship. Our newest recruit is
a young home-educated lad who ha5 been apprenticed to Carol.
ExtreTn¢ly important to our worship are the people who provide coffee etr. after the services. Our
litur￿ and preaching proclaim the love and acceplance of God to all, and the refreshments
afterwards incarna* IL
Thanks, too, to the Director or Music, Timoihy Rice, and the choir for their invaluable leading of
worship. This year, the congregation has (re)l¢arned the Benedicile, for which Timothy Rice has
composed a Dew setting. and he has also composed a new hymn tune, while the choir has also Sung
his Responses and his other works in their repertoire. W¢'re sad to have lost James from the choir,
Registered charity number: 1200694

but we've gained Li4 Marilyn and Axum, and are very glad to have singer5 from Hordle at
Evensong. Terence is grateful to Timothy for hi5 willingness to lry to accommodate repertoire she
brings from different traditions. People have appreciated hearing more plainchanL for example. We
are committed, as a church. to creating a culture of welcom¢, and using our excellent musical
tradition and resources to bring in different musicians. and cr¢at¢ events which are EM)th Worshipful
but will also ap￿81 to OUT concert audienc￿.
Concert audiences are important io us: they bring fresh air. finance. and new connections, and fonn
part of our centripetal mission. Timothy has been leading on thi& supwrted by Terence. and very
generously supported by the congregation as we have all had ￿ raise money for urgent repairs to
the organ this year- and that effort continues. Last year's conc¢rt ￿rieS included a very good mix
of sacrcd and secular music and school and community choirs. For example, we welcomed back the
Milford West Gallery Quir¢ to celebrdle Epipl)any with us, with a mixture of sacred and secular
s¢asonal music.
There have been some surprises: Ascension Day has not been celebrafed ￿ St John's. anointing for
healing not offered in the past ten years. and il came as news to some that th¢ Church ol. England
has allowed children (and adults) to receive Hoty Communion before ConfThation now for three
decades. Ascension Day was celebrdted with an early morning said smiice last year. and will be
celebrated this year in the evening with a scratch choir singin8 a rdrely-perforn]ed mass by Fauré
and Messager. Aftcr a series of sernions on the sacramenl of healing (now available on the website
and in hard copy in church) prayers for healing with laying on of hands and anointing were otTered
al the Eucharist on 23Fd March 2025, and this sacrament should be offerd reasonably regularly in
future.
We still have no clear strategy for integrating children in worship. but there is a PCC discussion
paper available for those who would b¢ interesled to read about different approaches. We are
graleful to David Wood¥ales for starting and nurturing a choir at William Gilpin School, hoping
thai thi5 will be an imwtant bridge for children and their parenis and sibl1￿(yS to Matins servir¢s
especially, and look lorward to receiving them when they have reached a suitsble sthndard. For the
time being, Terence has been asked not lo involve children again in Eucharistic consecration. The
PCC has suggested that St John's might be able to fonn a ieam to prepare Family Services, but it is
not clear yet who might do this. and for whom, and when these services might take plale.
W¢ are pleased to welcom¢ William Gilpin School to services al each end of ierni.
This year's Crib service. with tall puppets made by Liz Roberts (from Swag¢) was hugely
appreciated by adults and children. Liz has also produced an annotated and illuslraled version of
Matins for children to follow.
St John's is still a favourcd church for weddings, so we benefit from the presence of the young
couples. mosl of whom ar¢ required to allcnd at least six services in order to fulfil the legal
requirements for b¢ing married here by banns. They vary in their enjoyment. but some of them
s¢em very attracted to our worship, and we are embarrassed by requests by many wedding couples
,ho wish to have their children bapiized here, despite the Church discipline that children should be
baptized in their home church.
Some of our future hopes for worship art meniioned al)ove. but we also look fonvard to celebratin
St Philip's. Sydn¢y's 202) Richard Johnson's annual anniversary service on 4 May. using their
service booklet. We will welcome this year'5 funeral familie5 to the Parish Requiem (with I",aure's
setting) on I S¢ November, and invite people to provide lilies in memoriam the￿ Since we have
wedding flowers for the two weddings in Holy Week this year.

CHIIRCHW.4RDF.NS' REPORT
It has been another very busy y¢ar at Si John's. Our regular Services have been well suprK)rte
thanks to our local and loyal church members. These services. and much else, would not happen
without an arniy of volunteers, many working behind the scenes and often unsung. A heartfelt
thanks io them ail.

As in previous years. we held many bapti5rns. weddings and funerals. including a number of ashes
ivterments. It is somewhat surprising to note the relatively large number of burials" there were far
morc ol. Ihese than there were of ashes intern)ents. Burial space in the churchyard is being rapidly
used up: we are l(M)king at ways to extend the land availabl¢. Statistics are at the bottom of this
As usual, we have held a number of s￿131 services in 2024: Australia Day, the Blessing of the
Animals. the Hood Service and Remembrance Sunday Were all very well-attended. A highlight was
a Georgian Matins to celebrate the Tercentenary of the birth of William Gilpin. One of his excellent
published sernions was read. the content resonaied down the centuries. We also mounted an
exhibition in the church to compl¢m¢nt those at the Memorial Hall and the School.
The Crib Service, held on Christmas Fve. wa8 packed, with all ages represented. Wc were treated to
a fine drdma celebrdting Christmas. with many children taking part. all dressed in appropriate
ostumes. Animals, not least Fleur the Donkey. also t(x)k part and there were some wond¢rful visual
spectacles to illustrate the Nativiry Story.
After Christmas. we launch¢d an appeal to finance essential repairs and refitting of the organ. this
was done in tandem with the Boldre Church Trust. The eslimaie cost is £40,000, including VA T.
The response has been magnificen( so hu8e thanks to all who have donated so generously.
Music. reported on elsewhere, has contTnued o play a cenknl rol¢ at St John's. both during ServI￿S
and al sp¢cial concerts and recitsls. We are blessed with a supcrb organist and Director of Music
and a very fine choir.
Not surprisingly, with an historic Churc￿ we have had to spend some money on capital projects.
The lighting h&s been replaced and is now dimmable in all areas. Also. vitsl repairs to the fabric
have been carried out. notably to the Wesi Wall. We are 8raieful to the Boldre Church T￿st for
their financial support for these projects.
All in all. we have had another very gixKI year, received many blessings and hav¢ much to thank
Cjod for.

Our principal fundraising ev¢nL the Summer fete. was a little disappointing, raising about L7,334. This
figur¢ was cnhanccd by an Autumn Fair, which despite lots of competition for people's attention on
the day, raised £1,630.
Raising funds for the church is still a necessary occupation. Many people from the wider community
were involved in both events. especially the summer fete. Sadly in 2024, the feie clashed with
Walhampton School speech day. which reduced numbers slightl>. lThis year we plan to improve our

poster and banner advertising and to produce raffle tickets earlier. We are always very grnteful to
William Gilpin school for their help and loan of equipmenL
We are also pleased that Boldre Produce Fair has had a Stall at the fete for two years running, which
has helped them with publiciry for their fair. usually the week after the fele.
The 2025 summer fete will b¢ on 5th July - clear your diaries!
The gap left by the disbanding of St Nichol&s Singers has been filled by Director of Music. Timothy
Rice, who has given several popular concerts and organ recitsls during the year and which have
helped rais¢ funds as well as draw non-churchgo¢rs into St John's.
In other fundraising musical events, Walhampton School brought their chapel choir for a concert in
the summer. Eleanor Robinson brought her Queen Bees women's close-harnioTJy for a in D¢cembeT,
and they also sang at a fundraising concert with OUT local Canwas Ladi¢s' Choir in July.
'I"he Milford West Gallery Quire accompanied our William Gilpin service on 2 June and perfornied
seasonal music at the Epiphany pilgritnage as well as their wind quinlel providing two evenings of
carols at th¢ Filly Inn. with our own choir accompanied by Cynthia Wilson.
Carole Mo￿lS organised a successful harvest supper in Seplember. which raised £380.50 and a
benefice quiz was held in November (which raised £392) with tsbles of eight from Sl John'5 and St
Mary's with David W(y)dgates as quizmast¢r.
Play readings inlTodu¢ed by Terence, have been a FK)pular event since January 2024. Around a doi.en
people have attended each play readin¥ al the Filly Inn and Walhampton school library and A

Progress over the past year:
l ) There was an excellent Communications Survey conducted by Geoffrey Breeze.
2) We now offer St Mary's friend5 the 0p1￿unIry to receive the weekly pew sheet;
3) Emily-may Thow sends these out by email on Fridays.
4) THM compiles the pew sheets, which are now benefice-wide and also include selected
infonnation from Brockenhurst and th¢ diocese. These are proof-read by the te8rn involved
for the Sunday in question;
5) Emily-may is producing the notices for all the nofice-IM)ards and keeping the village and
chapel boards up to date.
6) Posters for the two churches are sent in the white boxes (alon8 with the Sunday sheets) for
Welcomers to pul up.
7) Nick and Pat have refreshed the interior and porch noticeboards at St Mary's. and Nick has

8) The otyer of texr messaging for Fdrishioners in an emergency was popular. but this has still
not yet been set up.
9) A broadbanth'phorte/wifi connection for Si Mary's Church has been more difficult to install
than anyone could have iTtJagined. It is a150 a work in progres5.
10) Don has recently made quite a few improvements to a website already praised by the
diore5an comms advisors:
I l) Jill has creal¢d and maintained an exc¢llent Facebook page which is linked in with many
local wmmunity pages. Terenc¢ h85 r¢vived the St John's Facebook pag¢ with th¢se new

12) Ernily-may has volunteered to set UP an Instagram account for the benefice"
J 3) Pat has taken responsibility for PR to local papers on khalf of the benefice:
14) Simon found and collected a set of display boards for St John
15) We are trying to co-ordinate our efforts better. The specific and current Comms Team

The value of our net assets reduced to £245,777. of which £15,840, was restric*d reserves held in

Restricted reserves are retained towards the upkeep of the fabric of the church and the gr3vryard. in
accordance with the PCC definition of Fabric and the ternis of the under-lying le8acy. given that
legacies constitute the primary sourc¢ of these rEseTves.
Financial and Reserves Policy
It has been agreed Ihat the PCC should follow a p)liey of seeking at least io break even year by
year. to seek to meet a5 fully as is prudent its requested Diocesan Contribution and to build up
reserves ro provide longer tern) financial stsbility, thus enabling Si John's. Boldre to continue active
worship long-terni. Its annual budget before any exceptional items is set on this basis.
In addition, it 15 the policy of the PCC to seek io hold readily realisable res¢rves th¢ equivalent of
six months budgeted nomal expendilure, includin8 gross salaries and honorari4 and the Diocesan
levy as approved by the PCC, which for 2025 is £45,000. This will be reviewed during the year in
the light of actual fmancial perforniance. It is our policy io hold £1,000 to cover grants receivcd
annually the continuation of which cannot be guaranteed. plus £6,000 in a mission reserve to enable
us to meet our mission commitments irrespective of amounts ideniified in any year's
budget. It is also our policy to hold an amount for likety non-fabric repair and maintenan
expenses including the churchyard.
In 2021 we rcceived the independently prepared Quinquennial Inspection report det8iling the
condition of the church, Which i5 Grade 2 listed. All the recommended works sel oul in the report
have now been completed.
A new quinquennial inspection is due to tske place during 2025.

the outcome of the forthcoming review are likely to ￿ Substantially less than our net assets as at 31
December 2024. This reserve is reviewed annually as part of the budgetary process.
The PCC also considers it prudent to seek over titne lo build up long¢r t¢rn] reserves with the aim of
s￿UrIng worship at St John's for the foreseeable future. To this end. in 2019 a Stewardship
Campaign was launched to increase planned givin& including legacies. Good progress was made
initially. increasing the number of donors under the PGS. though this ha5 now flattened.
Parishioners have been affected by the Covid pandemic and mote recently the cost- of- living crisis
and continuing pwr economic conditions. Additional available resources should they be generated
will be used to increase long terni TeseTves and provide fimds for additional mission work.
Our investmeni policy is to invesl short-teTm inveslmeni fund balances with the CCLA Church of

The PCC has complied with the duty under section 5 of the Safeguarding and Clergy Discipline
Measiir¢ 2016 (duty to have due regard io HO￿%¢ of Bi%hops' guidan¢¢ on safegu￿L￿g ¢hildr¢n and
vulnerable adults).
In the year, 8 DBS have come up for r¢n¢wal. S¢ven have renewed successfully and there is one in
hand.
2 new members of the PCC completed their Basie Awareness trainin8
Safeguarding training is in hand for Church Welcomers.
Safeguarding is a Standing Item on every PCC agenda.
No safeguarding issues have been raised this year.
A Dashboard introduced by the diocese in 2022 is working well and is a useful tool in maintaining
an up to dat¢ overview of safeguarding perforniance throughout the year against the Diocesan
Safeguarding template.
Those who are kind enough to voluntttr for rolej witbiD the chureh are asked to complete
some slmple safeguarding training. They Ydre also requested to apply for A DBS eertificate,
which can be done online. The first 5t*ge is for the BeD¢fKe Administrgtor to proTride the
volunteer wilh tbe basie inforniatioD to eDable the volunteer lo slart the applicAtion proce￿.
The second stage is for the identity documents rysed by the volunteer to be verIf￿d by the
PSO, ujualty by * quiek meeting in the Benefite Offlee.
Your PSO is constantly reminded of the importance of safeguarding. It is stressed to him thal
everyone should know what to do if they have a safeguarding concern ofany kind. That concern
should be shared in the first inswice with th¢ PSO on
uardin
boldrcchurch.com who will
escalat¢ it to the Diocesan Safeguarding Adviser (DSA). If the concern is an ¢meTgency or there is a
risk of immediate harm, the police musi be alerted &s well as Social Services. A report will then
need to be written and emailed to the DSA who will manage ihe response.
