Dorset Guild of Weavers, Spinners and Dyers Charity Number 1200685 Annual Report to the Charity Commission

The Dorset Guild of Weavers, Spinners and Dyers has had a successful year. There has been a good balance of talks at the monthly meetings with all three skills represented. Some of the highlights were the rigid heddle and tapestry weaving workshops that we put on at Frampton Village Hall with David Herring from Herrings shop and Ann Parker one of our members. David also ran a more advanced rigid heddle weaving workshop for a group of members later in the year. These workshops were very well received.

There were two great outings, one to Rampisham Mill which has opened fairly recently. The Mill processes fleece; washing, carding and spinning small quantities on request. The Guild spent the day there, had a tour of the Mill and a very interesting talk from its owner. It was deemed a lovely and informative day in a great location. We also visited the ‘Schumacher College Dye Garden’ on the Dartington Estate in Devon. We learned a great deal about growing dye plants. This was a great feature and a good opportunity to meet up with members of other guilds.

In January, we had Skills Day which offered a good range of skills, with some members sharing a particular skill with a group of other members.

In September, we had Open Day, when we welcomed members of the public to visit and see the guild on display. The day was a great success, largely due to the efforts of some of our members who represented us at a number of shows throughout the county during the summer season and encouraged people to visit us. A lot of effort goes in to attending the shows and the Dorset Arts and Crafts Association exhibition, but it is very well worthwhile. Following Open Day, we signed up a record number of new members.

Thanks to the legacy that we have received from a former member, we have been able to arrange an exciting programme for next year, featuring some well-known and respected speakers, including workshops.

We have also purchased some four shaft weaving looms, that can be hired out to members, and will enable members who want to, to move on from rigid heddle to shaft looms. We are planning to upgrade some of the guild spinning wheels, again so that new members can have the use of equipment that is expensive, before they invest in their own equipment. We are also planning to set up some bursaries, to assist. members to go on courses or attend summer school.

I feel that we have been faithful to our constitution in offering learning opportunities to long term and new members alike. The fact that we have attracted a number of new members bears witness to current success of the guild.
