The trustees who are also directors of the charity for the purposes of the Companies Act 2006, present their report with the financial statements of the charity for the year ended 5 April 2024. The trustees have adopted the provisions of Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2019).

Background

Established in 2020, Creative Ageing Development Ltd, working as ‘CADA’ was initiated by Manchester Museum, in collaboration with The Whitworth and Manchester Art Gallery, supported by the Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA) and the University of Manchester Institute for Collaborative Research on Ageing. Jointly commissioned by Arts Council England and Baring Foundation to provide national leadership in the Creative Ageing field, GMCA also invested significant strategic support.

In September 2022, the organisation became a registered charity, opening a bank account in March 2023 and establishing a registered office in Rochdale. By June 2023, the University had transferred CADA’s restricted funding into the charity, to the value of £140,453.

Our ambitions and priorities originally developed through a national consultation in partnership with Acta (Bristol) and Equal Arts (Gateshead) in 2020, are to:

Our charitable objectves are:

  1. Advancing education for the public benefit in the arts and culture, the practice of arts and culture by older people and the barriers that older people experience for participation in arts and culture, but not exclusively by conducting and commissioning research and publishing the useful results of such research.

  2. Promoting equality and diversity for the public benefit by: a) working for the elimination of discrimination on the grounds of age; b) promoting activities to foster understanding between people of differing ages; c) raising awareness of the value and contribution of older people to arts and culture. For the purposes of this objects clause, ‘older people’ means people aged 50 and over.

Governance

To achieve this, CADA employed part-time Director Virginia Tandy OBE until April 2023, before appointing Farrell Renowden in May 2023 (on a two-year contract). In addition to the role of Director, CADA is supported by freelance creatives on short-term contracts to fulfil specific roles for time-limited projects. CADA has also seen changes in our Board of Directors, with the addition of Arti Prashar OBE, Elizabeth Lynch MBE, and David Slater, who were appointed in June 2023.

With a significant change in directorship, CADA began a rapid review of our strategic delivery in response to issues identified in both Baring Foundation’s Older and Wiser? Creatve Ageing 2010-19 Report and Arts Council England’s Celebratng Age: Programme Evaluaton: Final Report (2023) in relation to equality, diversity and inclusion. Acknowledging our limited capacity and resource, we revised our strategic objectives to sharpen our focus on older creatives and communities who are under-represented/ underserved.

CADA’s Mission, Vision, Values & Impact were reviewed at the Board Away Day in September 2023:

Our mission is to lead a radical rethink of under-served/ under- represented older diverse creatives and communities.

Our vision is a radical change in the status quo, as we celebrate our ageing through creativity, coproduction, and collective endeavour.

Our values include:

Outputs

Since 2020, we have organised three major national and international events, had over 2000 downloads of CADA reports and attracted almost 1000 Twitter followers. We have chaired four national online events, presented at 14 national and international conferences, sat on two academic research boards, and contributed editorials to national publications. This year has been significant in terms of using our research and leadership insight to form long-term strategic plans.

Highlights include:

April 2023, Virginia Tandy OBE left the organisation after three years in post, with a legacy of high-quality research, including our report Visionaries: A South Asian Arts Counter Narratve, co-written by arts advisors Arti Prashar OBE and Elizabeth Lynch MBE and featured in Arts Professional. They were invited to join CADA’s board of Trustees and became Co-Chairs April 2023.

May 2023, Farrell Renowden joined CADA as part-time Director, with over a decade of leadership in the Creative Ageing field. Specialising in Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, Creative Evaluation, and Creative PlaceMaking, the transition of roles provided an opportunity for a rapid review of strategic delivery during the Summer of 2023.

June 2023, CADA worked with international partners to deliver the 3rd annual Internatonal Creatve Aging Summit. With 440 Cultural and Ageing leaders from 24 countries, this online event focussed on innovative cross-sector partnerships, with examples from across the world. The Director chaired an extended event exploring the role of libraries and intersectionality.

July 2023, The Connectng Through Culture As We Age research project, focussing on socio-economically/ racially minoritised older people, led by partners at Bristol University, ended. Having sat on the expert board for two years, CADA shared the key recommendations with our extensive networks, and 128 people actively engaged with the content.

August 2023, Arti Prashar OBE, Farrell Renowden and former Director Virginia Tandy OBE, were commissioned to write an editorial for the Baring Foundation, as part of the ‘Creatve Ageing: What Next? An agenda for the future’. Published as part of the National Conference in October 2023, these 15 essays were viewed by 8.5k on Twitter.

September 2023, CADA’s Board Away Day produced a three-year strategic plan, with objectives that continue to evolve: Voice and Visibility, Radical Creative Ageing Living Labs, and Celebrating Our Ageing. During the day, Co-Chair Elizabeth Lynch MBE commented, “Art and creativity is happening, not just with artists, but with older people on the ground – but it’s invisible to the mainstream.”

October 2023, The Natonal Creatve Ageing Conference took place in Newcastle and Co-Chair, Elizabeth Lynch MBE, shared CADA’s new vision for the future, with over 100 delegates. As key partners, CADA also hosted the online directory of delegates for the conference and promoted the event, with 3500 twitter impressions on the day.

November 2023, CADA co-created the first of our ‘Fanzines’, reflecting our new strategic plans. Dr. Stella Duffy OBE, renowned Creative Ageing activist, said: ‘Creativity, is thinking by doing, together.’ With an impressive response by our growing audience, our interactive fanzine was opened by 250 people, viewed by 580 people on Instagram and the interview was viewed by 88 people on YouTube.

December 2023: The Age of Creativity national network, with over 10k of social media followers, asked CADA to take over communications as it wound down. In just one month, CADA increased subscribers to our monthly enews from 384 to 1022 (by 640) people, from a wide range of arts, culture, age, care, community, and academic sectors, and this continues to grow.

January 2024, CADA began our mission to embed lived experience at every level of the organisation, by recruiting a small group of ‘RUPT Associates’, older diverse creatives with a socially engaged practice, supporting us to 6isrupt the status quo. A call out through our channels generated over 2k in website visits, 80 expressions of interest, and 50 high quality applications.

February 2024, Building on the success of our first Fanzine, we developed the second in our series with Dominic Campbell, Founder of Creative Aging International. With 458 view on LinkedIn, it was recognised and shared by Ashton Applewhite, author of ‘This Chair Rocks: A Manifesto Against Ageism’ and an internationally renowned spokesperson on the impact of ageism globally.

March 2024, CADA selected four RUPT Associates, representing intersectionality in terms of age/ ethnicity/ disability: Amanda Holiday, featured in Tate Britain’s exhibition, Women in Revolt!; Bunmi Ogunsiji , British Nigerian writer, longlisted in the National Poetry Competition; Maya Chowdhry, a QTIPOC older interdisciplinary artist; Sama Hunt, a multidisciplinary artist/art psychotherapist.

The Future

With a new strategic vision, focussed on under-represented/under-served older creatives and communities, and a dedicated leadership team of lived and practice experience, CADA is well placed to deliver ‘radical approaches that celebrate our age’. The new financial year will include a nationally significant event, the development of new ‘Creative Ageing Living Labs’, and new partnership projects. However, there is also a need to match the ambitions of the organisation, with the resources and capacity required to realise CADA’s next significant chapter.

We are grateful to our Co-Chairs Arti Prashar OBE, Elizabeth Lynch MBE and board members Phil Cave, Paul McGarry, Sarah Roper, and David Slater who have guided the development of CADA into an independent charity. We would like to thank Esme Ward who resigned from her position in June 2023. We also recognise the generous support of CADA by the Baring Foundation, Arts Council England and GMCA and look forward to building on these partnerships in the future.

FINANCIAL REVIEW

Financial position

Due to the funding being transferred from the university the charity generated a surplus for the year of £93,224 which has been carried forward as unrestricted funds. The funds carried forward are free reserves.

Investment policy and objectives

The Charity's powers of investment are governed by its Memorandum and Articles of Association.

The trustees have considered the most appropriate policy for investing funds and have found that a building society or bank deposit account meets their requirements. There are currently insufficient funds to invest.

Reserves policy

It is the policy of the charity to maintain unrestricted funds, which are free reserves of the charity, at a level which equate to approximately six months unrestricted expenditure. This provides sufficient funds to cover management and administration and support costs. Unrestricted funds were in excess of this level, however, the trustees consider that the funds will be required to meet potential shortfalls in income over the next few years.

STRUCTURE, GOVERNANCE AND MANAGEMENT

Governing document

The charity is controlled by its governing document, a deed of trust, and constitutes a limited company, limited by guarantee, as defined by the Companies Act 2006.

Independent examiner's report to the trustees of Creative Ageing Development Limited ('the Company')

I report to the charity trustees on my examination of the accounts of the Company for the year ended 5 April 2024.

Responsibilities and basis of report

As the charity's trustees of the Company (and also its directors for the purposes of company law) you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Companies Act 2006 ('the 2006 Act').

Having satisfied myself that the accounts of the Company are not required to be audited under Part 16 of the 2006 Act and are eligible for independent examination, I report in respect of my examination of your charity's accounts as carried out under Section 145 of the Charities Act 2011 ('the 2011 Act'). In carrying out my examination I have followed the Directions given by the Charity Commission under Section 145(5) (b) of the 2011 Act.

Independent examiner's statement

I have completed my examination. I confirm that no matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe:

  1. accounting records were not kept in respect of the Company as required by Section 386 of the 2006 Act; or

  2. the accounts do not accord with those records; or

  3. the accounts do not comply with the accounting requirements of Section 396 of the 2006 Act other than any requirement that the accounts give a true and fair view which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination; or

  4. the accounts have not been prepared in accordance with the methods and principles of the Statement of Recommended Practice for accounting and reporting by charities (applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102)).

I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.

1. ACCOUNTING POLICIES

Basis of preparing the financial statements

The financial statements of the charitable company, which is a public benefit entity under FRS 102, have been prepared in accordance with the Charities SORP (FRS 102) 'Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2019)', Financial Reporting Standard 102 'The Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland' and the Companies Act 2006. The financial statements have been prepared under the historical cost convention.

The trustees consider that there are no material uncertainties about the Charity's ability to continue as a going concern.

Income

All income is recognised in the Statement of Financial Activities once the charity has entitlement to the funds, it is probable that the income will be received and the amount can be measured reliably.

Expenditure

Liabilities are recognised as expenditure as soon as there is a legal or constructive obligation committing the charity to that expenditure, it is probable that a transfer of economic benefits will be required in settlement and the amount of the obligation can be measured reliably. Expenditure is accounted for on an accruals basis and has been classified under headings that aggregate all cost related to the category. Where costs cannot be directly attributed to particular headings they have been allocated to activities on a basis consistent with the use of resources.

Taxation

The charity is exempt from corporation tax on its charitable activities.

Fund accounting

Unrestricted funds can be used in accordance with the charitable objectives at the discretion of the trustees.

Restricted funds can only be used for particular restricted purposes within the objects of the charity. Restrictions arise when specified by the donor or when funds are raised for particular restricted purposes.

Further explanation of the nature and purpose of each fund is included in the notes to the financial statements.

Pension costs and other post-retirement benefits

The charitable company operates a defined contribution pension scheme. Contributions payable to the charitable company's pension scheme are charged to the Statement of Financial Activities in the period to which they relate.

Capitalising fixed assets

It is the policy of the charity only to consider capitalising assets costing over £900.

There was office equipment transferred from the university as part of the funding transfer however these items have not been valued as their resale value at the date of the transfer was not considered significant
