swirnrning and associated aclivrf(ies and where appropiiale lo compete.

Bristol and South Gloucestershire Swimming Club IBSGI was formed in March 2025 from a
merger between Bristol Penguins Olympic Swimming Club and Soundwell Swimming Club (official
name change on 1 st April 20251- two longstanding clubs vAthin the Bristol area. The dub now
operates from multiple sites across Bristol and South Gloucestershire, including Hengrove,
Henbury. Badminton S¢hool. Easton. Kingswood, Wintert)ourne and Bath Univèisity.
Our elh05 Is lo leach and coach our members. not just lo swirll bul lo become lifelong swirnrneis.
We aim to provide a productive yet enjoyable environment where each swimmer can progress and
strive for excellence along their own individual swimming journey. We also aim lo do our bit to help
our young members develop as young people as well as swimmèrs, such as through our young
volunteer programme. Our dub is managed by a group of dedicated and well organised volunteer
committee members. BSG is cotnrnitted lo providing a caring, friendly. and safe enviionmenl for
all our members, so that when they participate in club aciivities, they do so in a relaxed and secure
environment.
We are a friendly swimming club and airn to value each one ol our members. We have around 900
mémbèrs ranging from thosè learning to be swimmers. competitive and less compétitive
s￿ri￿rnerS, perforrnan￿ athletes, a masters section for adults and provision lor those with
addrtional needs. In the summer we run an open w*er piogr8mme. Soci81 events are 8lso an
important part of the calendar. We have a policy of supporting those in hardship to be able to
access club activities and we organise swimming galas for local primary schools and swimrning
lessons to support older piimary agèd childr8n to bè ablè to swim at léast 25m and havè an
understanding of water safety.

The main actiTVitITes undertaken during the year to further the charitys purpose for
the public benefiTt.
This last Swimming season. the club has run a full weekly swimming progiamrne. This has been
complemented by additional activities such as swimming competitions. We continue to work with
swrnrning pool operators, local schools, UWE and have a partnership with Badrninton School.
These working rélationships help ensure we have suffi¢ient walei lime for our swirnming activities
and we can attract new members to join the club.
We follow the Swim England guidance and continue to hold'swim Mark, Accreditation- the kite
mark for swimming clubs to confirm they are run properfy, including that the necessary governance
and safèguarding arrangèmsnts arè in plaeè.
The olub ha5 continued with ils wder wmtniltnenl10 5UPPOrting swirnming in Bristol. We offer
financial support where costs are a barrier to participation and swrimming lessons for local primary
school children unable to swim 25m. We continue lo provide a dedicated session for para
swmmers, potential para swimmers and those with additional needs. In April 2024 we established
an Inclusive Learn to Swim programme of lessons supported by Access Sport which introduces
s￿mMIng lo ¢hildren with varying needs.
The Iruslees have had regard lo the Charity Cornrllission's guidance on public benefit in managing
the activities of the charity.
The short term alms and objectlves.
-Following on from formation of BSG in April 2025. to continue lo work on developing our club
values and culture where we ¢ontinue to strive for ex¢ellence in what we do whilst providing an
indusive dub that provides a breath of opportunity.
-To continue, over time, develop the structural organisation of the dub and aligning policies and
practices across the whole club.
-Recruitment of more swimming teachers, to ensure we have sufficient people in place and make
best use of our pool lime.
-To work on grealei acce55 to long course training provision especially at Hengiove Park Leisure
Centre.
-Develop ¢lub links with the leisure ¢enlres and the swimming pools we use.
-M8inlain a sharp focus on retention and reciuitment- lo glow the dub
numbers and ensure we can tackle price increases I budget pressures to be financially
sustainable.
-Recruitment of a wider range of volunteers lo create a competition group which will organise and
run dub wmpelilions and in lutn free up Capacity for olheis to spend rnoie time working on the
strategic direction of the club.
-RecruVtment of those willing to train as offiaals or team managers.

Structurg, govornancg and management of tho charity
The methods used to recrult and appolnt new charlty trustees.
The managernent of the Charity is the responsibility of the Trustees who are elected and ctropled
under the térms of the Charity Commission Scheme. The trusteès are eligible. in commrttee. to
appoint trustees under the terms of the CIO constitution.
In selecting individLJals for appointment as trustees, the existing trustees must have regard to the
skills, knovledge and experience needed for the effective administration of the CIO.
The charitys organisational structure.
The charity is govemed by the constitLrtion and was approved initially by Swim England Inational
governing bodyl and subsequently was then approved by the members at the AGM on 26th May
2022. The ¢onstitLrtion and application for eligible trustees was approved by the Charity
Commission on 22nd September 2022. The Club Constitution was updated on 24th November
2024, followng 8 Special General Meeting about the rneiger of Bristol Penguins and Soundwell. Al
this meeting those present passed a proposal to change the voting age to members age 16 and
above (previously 181. Also. subsequently on 10th March following a Special General Meeting il
was updated further," the main changes being the name of the Club from Bristol Penguin Olympic
Swimming Club lo Bristol & South Gloucestershire Swimming Club and to indude Vice
Chaitperson as an Executive Officer Role.
The Club Committee meets bimonthly during the swimming season and no fewer than four limes in
total for the duration of the swimming season. The CIO is managed and administered by the
Committee and some aspects are delegated to others who have organisational and adrninistralive
positions but arè not Committèe mèmbérs thèmselves.

Bas1$ of p￿paratIon and accountlng ¢onventlon
The accounts have been prepared on the ac¢ruals basis. under the historical cost convention, and In accordan￿ wth the
Financial Reporting Standard 102, (effective 1st January 20161 and 'FRS 102 SORP (Statement of Recommended
Practice for AccDunling and Reporting by Charities) 2015, las amended by the Bulletin issued in October 2018 and
applicable lo all accounting periods beginning on or after 1st January 20191, (The SORPI. putilished by the Charity
Cornmission in England & Wale5 ICCEWI , effective January 2016, and in accordance with all applicable law in the
charity's jurisdiction of registration, exc*pt that the charity has prepared the financial statements in accordance with the
FRS 102 SORP (Statement ol Recommended Practice for Accounting and Reporting by Charities) 2015, las amended
by the Bulletin Issued In October 2018 and applicable to 311 accounting penod5 beginning on or after 1st January 20191,
(The SORPI. in preference to the previous SORP. the SORP 2005, which h8s been withdrawn, nomilhstanding the fact
that the extant statutory regulations. the Charrties (A¢￿Unts and Reports) Regulations 2008 ￿fer expliatly to the SORP
2005. This ha5 been done to accord with current best practice.
Going Concern
After making appropriate enquiries, the trustees have a reasonable expectation that the Charity has adequate resources
to continue in operational existence for the foreseeable future. For thi5 rea50n, they continue to adopt the going con￿r￿
basis in p￿parIng the finan¢i81 statements.
Risks and futu￿ assumptions
The charity is a public benefit entity.
The Club has In place systems of Intemal controls that are designed to provide reasonable assuran￿ against material
mismanagement or loss. These include financial controls and comprehensive insurance policies ar8 in plsce to ensure
Policies relating to categories of income andincome recognition.
Nature of income
Gross Income ￿preSents the value, net of value added tax and discounts, of got￿$ provided to customers and work
carried out in respect of services provided to customer5.
Catsgories of Income
Income is categorised as income from exchange transactions l¢ontra¢t income) and income from non*x¢hange
tran￿ctiOnS Igiftsl, Investment income and other Income.
In¢ome from exchange Iran$a¢tlon$ is re￿iVed by the charity for goods or services supplied under contrad or where
entitlement is subject to fulfilling performance related conditions. The income the charity receives is approximately equal
in value to the goods or Servi￿$ supplied by the charity to the purchaser.
Income from a non-exchange transactlon 18 where the charity receives value from the donor without providing equal
value in exchange, and includes donations of rnoney, goods and services freely given wthout giving equal value in
ex¢hange.

Income recognition

Where terms and conditions relating to income have not been met 01 uncertainty exists as to whether the charity

probable that the terms or condrtions Imposed can be met.
Any grant that is subject to performance-related conditions received in advance of delivering the goods and services
required by that condition, or is subiecl to unmet conditions wholly outside the control of the recipient Charity. Is
accounted for as a liability and shown on the balance sheet as deferred Income. Deferred incotne is released to income
in the reporting period in which the performance-related or other conditions that limit recognition are met.
When income from a gr8nt or donation has not been ￿¢￿nISed due to the ¢ondition$ applying to the gift not being wholly
within the control of the recipient charity, It Is disclosed as a contingent asset il ￿elpt ol the grant or donation Is
piobable On￿ those conditions are met.
Where time related conditions are imposed or implied by a funder. then the income is apportioned to the time period$

When grants are received in advance of the expenditure on the activity funded by thern. but there are no specific tirne
related ￿nditiOns, then the income is not deferred.
Any condition that allows for the ￿¢0very by the donor of any unexpended part of a grant doe$ not prevent rewnition of
the Income corn￿rned, but a liability to any repayment is ￿COgnised when repayment becomes probable.
Membershlp subscrlptlon$
The income and any as$o¢iated Gift Aid or other tax ￿f￿nd from a membership subscription ￿￿1Ved by the Charity in the
nature of a gift, Is accounted for on the same basis as a donation.
The income from a membership sub$¢ription re￿iVed by the ¢harity where the $ubs¢ription pur¢ha$es the right to

Volunteers
In accordance with the SORP, and in recognition of the difficultie5 in pla￿ng a monetary value on the contribution tro
volunteers. the contribution of volunteers is not included within the income of the charity.
However. the trustees value the significant Contribution made to the activities of the charity by unpaid volunteers and this
is described MO￿ fully in Note5.

Debtors are measured at their recoverable amounts 8t the balance sheet d8te.

Cash held by the charity is included at the amount actually held and counted at the year end. Bank balances, whether in

1 Fund Accounting
Unrestricted funds are available for use at the discretion of the trustees in furtheranr£ of the general objectives of the
charity.
There are no endowment funds.
2 Llablllty to tsxatlon
The Trustees consider that the charity satisfies the tests sel out in Paragraph 1 Schedule S of the Finance Act 2010 for
UK corporation tax purposes. Accordingly, the Charity 15 Potentially exempt from taxation in respect of Incorne 01 capital
gains received within categories covered by chapter 3 part 11 of the Corporation Tax Act 2010 or Section 256 of the
Taxation of Chargeable Gains A¢t 1992. to the extent that such income or gains a￿ applied exdusively on the specific
charitable objects of the charity and for no other purpose. Value Added Tax 15 not recoverable by the charity, and 15
therefore included in the relevant costs in the St8tement of Financial Activities.
3 Winding up or dissolution of the charity
If upon winding up or dissolution of the charity there remain any assets, after the satisfaction of all debts and Iiabilitie5,
the assets represented by the 8ccumulated fund shall be tr8nsferred to some other charitable body or bodies having
similar objects to the charity.
4 Significance of financial instruments to the charity's position

S The contribution of voluntee
The charity depends on the support of its volunteers, which 15 much appreciated. The arrangements with volunteers sre

volunteers and the charrty a¢￿pt and ag￿e that no contract of employment is ￿ated by these arrangements.
