## **Report for Financial Year 2024-25**

**Trustees:** Dr Martin Powell (Chair), Ann Dieckmann (Secretary), Caroline Richardson (Treasurer), Prof Paul Griffiths, Brenda Griffiths, Dr Kate Powell

**Date of report:** 12 September 2025

**Charity Number:** 1200457

**Period covered by the report:** July 1, 2024 to June 30, 2025

## **Commentary on the Trustees’ Annual Report and accounts**

In line with the purpose of the Charity set out in our Governing Document, BBRCF’s purpose in the financial year July 1, 2024 to June 30, 2025 was to use the income for the relief of the poor and needy. As a Charity with an income of £35,296 in the reporting period, the Charity is below the audit threshold. Therefore, BBRFC has prepared a simple annual report that focuses on the main activities undertaken to further its charitable aims.

## **Financial Review**

Total receipts for FY 2024-25 were £35,296. The largest donation (£10,815) came from The Orphaned Starfish Foundation, a US non-profit organisation that funds the construction, maintenance and staffing of vocational computer training facilities. The grant was designated for computer infrastructure and to finance 2 IT teachers at Zanzibar Learning 4 Life Foundation, a Zanzibar NGO. These facilities are shared with Heroes Community Academy.

BBRCF has identified 9 students who need financial assistance to pursue their educational goals at university in Zanzibar. The Charity has received donations of £4,779 from Rotary Clubs and the Rotary District organisation that have been designated for assisting with tuition fees. Rotary clubs have also donated towards a project to build a Science laboratory in Nairobi for Children’s Garden Home, an NGO that supports orphans and other disadvantaged children to achieve an education.

The Charity has received £6,760 donations from private individuals to support the education of students at Zanzibar University as well as 6 primary school age children attending Zanzibar Heroes Community Academy.

Other fund-raising includes donations from schools who wish to support the Charity’s educational activities in Africa (£3,950), donations on Kindlink from individuals who follow the Charity’s projects and individual donations.

In 2024-5 the Charity raised £1,562 from running Mermaid Swimming events under the project name “Sussex Mermaid School”. £2,098 (on Sum Up) and £1,040 (cash) came from other fund-raising events such as an Open House and Face Painting at public events in Lancing, Hove and Rottingdean.

## **Expenses**

The Charity operates with no paid employees and no Trustee reimbursement. Of the £27,429 spent only 2% (£552) was used to cover operating expenses. These included expenditure on equipment for the aforementioned fund-raising activities (refurbishment of Mermaid tails for fund-raising mermaid swimming parties and purchase of face paint for face painting fund-raising). The Charity contributed to subsistence for volunteer face painters and an overseas Rotary Scholar (£45). The Charity paid £110 in bank charges and £129 to maintain the Kindlink fund-raising platform.

## **Public Benefit**

The Trustees confirm that they have had full regard to the public benefit guides PB1, PB2 and PB3 when making decisions on expenditure.

## **Statement of Assets and Liabilities**

BBRCF have reserves of £11,838 taken forward to FY2025-26. Of this £10,411 was designated for payment for agreed specific projects in July 2025.

## **Acknowledgement**

We thank Accountant Sami Adwan for reviewing our accounts.

## **Independent examiner’s report**

During my examination, no matter has come to my attention which gives me reasonable cause to believe that accurate accounting records have not been met.

## **Reporting Public Benefit**

The main achievements in the year were as follows:

**Sponsorship of students at school and university in Zanzibar.** Funds were overseen and managed in Zanzibar by Zanzibar Learning 4 Life Foundation, a registered NGO in Zanzibar. Funds are being used to educate 9 students from poor families in the fishing village of Unguja Ukuu who otherwise would not be able to attend university. The university students are studying data science, agriculture, education with biology, marine science, tourism and marketing (2), engineering, business studies and a foundation course. These vocational courses will lead to employment opportunities on

the island and will contribute to the development of the island economy. The students are part of a long-term programme (begun in 2015) to support the first cohort of young people from a disadvantaged area to benefit from further education. All the students are reported to be working hard and are achieving excellent grades. They are also acting as role models for their community and, starting in September 2025, the Charity has agreed to sponsor two young girls who want to study dentistry (a new course to be offered in Zanzibar). The Charity is also financing 6 Primary School age students to attend Heroes Community Academy. Sponsorship includes provision of uniform, school fees, supplies and school lunches. The 6 students are from poor families in Fuoni. Due diligence is ensured by means testing carried out by the local community leader. Again, these students are reported to be working hard to achieve good grades. Total cost of educating 15 students is £7,600.

**Sponsorship of a visit to the UK by the Principal of Zanzibar Learning 4 Life Foundation,** Shafii Mwita Haji, and one student Sleiman Ali Azizi to provide feedback to stakeholders, undertake educational activities in the UK and develop connections to extend Heroes Community Academy in Zanzibar. Total cost was £3,104. Mr Haji met potential funders who have subsequently committed to new projects and been on fact-finding visits to Zanzibar. They spoke at 4 schools in England and Wales where they met with over 1000 students and their teachers. This provided a valuable sharing of experiences and ideas that were of value to UK students as well as to Mr Haji and Mr Azizi. After the visit UK students have been raising funds to help their counterparts in Zanzibar.

**Sponsorship of Zanzibar Learning 4 Life’s Computer education programme in Zanzibar** . Total funds £7,237. The programme now educates 85 students and the computers are also well used by the 45 staff at Zanzibar Learning 4 Life and Heroes Community Academy. The payment in the year 2024-25 covered 10 computers (£4,957) and salary for 2 teachers (£2,280)

**Payment of funds to finance purchase of necessary equipment for Gasicare.** May £449. This includes purchase of supplies (nappies, wipes and food) as well as painting the school room.

**Construction and equipment for a new science laboratory at the school operated by Children’s Garden Home in Kenya.** The cost for the building was £6,133. The Laboratories are part of the school attended by orphans and other dispossessed young people in Nairobi. The science lab is used by 420 students (200 girls and 220 boys) and will enable them to qualify for higher education opportunities. The subjects studied include Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Integrated Science. Students are aged from 12 – 18 years old. They study for Kenya national public examinations - KCSE for form four, KJSE for grade 9 and KIPSEA for grade 6.

## **Local projects in the UK**

The Charity was able to spend £123 on local projects in the Sussex area – this includes financing incubator covers for the Trevor Mann Neonatal Unit at the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital in Brighton and assisting with Wrap Up Worthing, an annual project to secure donations of coats for homeless people in the county.

## **Volunteers**

We would like to thank the volunteers who support our fund-raising events and scholarship programme – these include Feroz Jafferji and Natalie Hernandez as well as

students from Sir Robert Woodard Academy in Lancing, West Sussex who assist at face painting events

## **Structure, governance and management**

The Charity is administered by 6 Trustees. It operates from the private homes of Trustees. The correspondence address is “Seascape,18b Brighton Road, Lancing, BN15 8RH”. There are no associated overheads. Banking is provided by Lloyds Bank. The Trustees met 3 times during the year with 100% attendance by all Trustees.

The Trustees will apply the funds of the Trust at their discretion and in accordance with the Trust’s charitable objects.

Each request for grant aid will be considered on its own merits and no restrictions will be placed on beneficiaries, by reason of race, gender, age, religion, disability, or sexual orientation

## **Sources of funding**

The Charity is not currently planning any investment and has no risks facing it. There are no uncertainties about the Charity continuing as a going concern.

## **Reserves Policy**

It is our policy to have a balance of funds sufficient to cover our educational commitment to students in Zanzibar for the next financial year and to build up unrestricted reserves that can be used for local projects.

## **Declarations**

This report was approved by the Trustees on xx August 2025 and signed on their behalf by Dr Martin Powell.
