The trustees, who are also directors of the Charity for the purposes of the Companies Act 2006, present their report with the financial statements of the charity for the year ended 30[th] April 2024. The trustees have adopted the provisions of Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2019).
## **Legal and Administrative Information**

The recruitment and appointment of charity trustees follow a structured and transparent process to ensure the effective governance of the charity. ## **Charitable Purpose**
B Young Stars’ primary aim is to serve as a vital resource for young people aged 8 to 19 living in the London Borough of Greenwich by providing advice, support, and organising a variety of physical, educational, and other enriching activities. The objectives focus on advancing personal development by enhancing the skills, capacities, and capabilities of young people, enabling them to participate in society as independent, mature, and responsible individuals. Additionally, the charity seeks to promote education, support young people in preparing for and accessing employment opportunities to relieve unemployment, and provide recreational and leisure activities that foster a sense of community and improve their overall quality of life. These efforts collectively empower young individuals, equipping them with the tools and opportunities needed to thrive and contribute meaningfully to society.
To fulfil its purposes, the charity undertakes a variety of activities aimed at supporting young people’s growth and integration. **Educational programs** form a core part of its work, including sessions in Math, English, and language development to help participants adapt to the National Curriculum. Tailored **mentoring programs** and career guidance are provided to prepare young people for employment and to relieve unemployment challenges.
The charity also organises **recreational and leisure activities** such as sports, crafts, and youth club events, which serve to promote physical well-being and provide opportunities for social interaction. These activities encourage teamwork, self-confidence, and community engagement. Additionally, the charity provides guidance and signposting for families, connecting them with relevant local support services to ensure a holistic approach to the needs of young people and their families.
Through these targeted efforts, the charity works to achieve its goals of advancing education, promoting well-being, and fostering a supportive environment for the development of young people in Greenwich.
## **Achievements**
In **2023 and 2024** , B Young Stars experienced unprecedented growth, driven by increased demand for its services. The charity successfully delivered 9 projects throughout the year, operating in youth hubs across the **Royal Borough of Greenwich** , reflecting its capacity to adapt and expand to meet the evolving needs of the community. This significant growth highlights the charity’s ability to respond to rising educational and social challenges.
The additional projects allowed B Young Stars to reach more young people and families, offering tailored programs such as educational support, refugee integration initiatives, and recreational activities. Partnerships with key stakeholders, including Charlton Athletic Community Trust (CACT), the Royal Borough of Greenwich, Barnfield Big Local and the Jack Petchey Foundation, played a vital role in this expansion, providing the necessary funding and resources to scale operations.

By broadening its scope to include 9 projects, the charity not only increased its impact but also solidified its position as a trusted and essential resource within the community. This growth enabled the organisation to engage with more young people, address critical areas of need, and deliver meaningful, life-changing support to those it serves.
In response to the growing demand for educational support in the Royal Borough of Greenwich, the organisation continued to deliver educational programs.
B Young Stars remains dedicated to continuous improvement by conducting thorough research, learning from previous years, analysing impact data, and identifying the evolving needs of young people across the borough. This proactive approach allowed the organisation to pinpoint areas where additional support was needed, driving efforts to secure further funding to expand its reach.
This strategic expansion proved to be highly successful, as the programs delivered showcased a significant positive impact on young people’s educational attainment levels and attitudes toward learning.
## **Educational Programs**
Recognising the success of the initiative, B Young Stars worked closely with Charlton Athletic Community Trust (CACT) to secure additional funding. This enabled the program to grow further, extending its reach to two additional youth hubs, Woolwich Common and Avery Hill.
Through this expansion, B Young Stars has ensured that an even greater number of young people across the borough can benefit from its programs, reinforcing its commitment to empowering the next generation and addressing critical educational and social needs in the community.
The charity has continued delivering these programs in 2023/2024, reflecting its commitment to addressing educational needs and empowering young people across the borough. In October 2023, young people from B Young Stars participated in a residential program at Hindleap Warren alongside participants from the Kicks program, further enriching their experiences.
Over the year 2023/2024, B Young Stars delivered three universal youth sessions per week across three youth hubs, engaging with 332 unique young people and achieving 3,500 total attendances. This is a significant increase compared to 2016/2017 when the organisation ran two sessions per week at a single hub, engaging 92 unique young people. These achievements underscore the continued growth and impact of B Young Stars in fostering education, social development, and community integration.
## **Holiday Food and Fun Programs**
For the young people, the HAF program offered opportunities to develop new skills, build friendships, and participate in enriching activities, such as sports, arts, and educational workshops. Many participants experienced improved confidence, physical well-being, and social interaction, which contributed to their overall personal growth. The program also ensured that every child

attending had access to nutritious meals, addressing food insecurity for many families and promoting healthy eating habits.
For families, the program alleviated the stress of finding affordable childcare and meaningful activities during the holiday periods. It provided parents and guardians with peace of mind, knowing their children were in a safe, nurturing environment. Additionally, the program served as a gateway for families to access further support services, creating a holistic approach to community well-being.
The success of the HAF program is evident in the positive feedback from families and the consistent attendance of young people, many of whom eagerly returned for multiple seasons. By meeting the dual needs of young people and their families, the program has become a vital resource, fostering a sense of community and making a tangible difference in the lives of those it serves.
## **Ukraine Program**
In 2023/2024, B Young Stars successfully addressed the critical educational and social needs of Ukrainian refugee children displaced by conflict, ensuring a positive and lasting impact on their integration into the UK education system. The interruptions to schooling caused by the war and the pandemic posed significant challenges for these young people, particularly those at formative stages of their academic and personal development.
Recognising the gaps in support within the borough, B Young Stars collaborated with organisations such as CACT Trust, Ukrainian Support Greenwich, Royal Borough of Greenwich, and local schools to design and deliver a tailored program focused on building academic confidence, character growth, and a positive mindset. Through weekly sessions, combining Maths and English tutoring with recreation and sports, the program provided a holistic approach to addressing educational disruptions.
Our innovative use of dual-language resources, such as the Badger Learning books with English and Ukrainian text, ensured accessibility and supported the young people in navigating the UK curriculum. These resources allowed students to maintain a connection to their native language while developing fluency in English.
The impact extended beyond education. The Saturday sessions created a supportive and inclusive community where young people could interact with peers, fostering social integration and a sense of belonging. Ukrainian-speaking staff played a key role in bridging cultural and linguistic gaps, ensuring participants felt understood and valued. Average attendance of young people 35.
Additionally, B Young Stars worked closely with statutory and community services to achieve the best outcomes. Young people at risk of falling behind or facing challenges such as NEET or criminal activity which were referred to us , enabling us to provide targeted support.
The collaboration with Ukrainian Support Greenwich was instrumental in recruiting staff, engaging participants, and aligning services. This partnership ensured that the program reached those most in need and effectively met its objectives.

As a result, the project not only helped Ukrainian refugee children integrate and excel in the UK education system but also strengthened their families’ confidence and connection to the community. By leveraging our network, expertise, and passion, B Young Stars has delivered meaningful, measurable outcomes that will positively shape the lives of the young people and families we serve.
## **Barnfield Big Local Program**
B Young Stars continued to achieve its mission of promoting education, physical well-being, and social integration through the delivery of four targeted weekly sessions at the Barnfield Community Hub and the MUGA football cage. These sessions were carefully designed to meet the diverse needs of young people, focusing on reducing the risk of falling behind in education and mitigating peer pressure that could lead to antisocial behaviour. By combining activities with strong educational outcomes, the program not only supported academic progress but also encouraged physical health, personal growth, and community cohesion.
The sessions at Barnfield Community Hub were tailored to specific age groups, offering a safe and supportive environment for learning and growth. The activities emphasised education alongside character-building, equipping young people with skills to succeed in school and beyond. At the MUGA football cage, sports sessions and tournaments encouraged physical fitness, teamwork, and confidence. These activities were inclusive, offering football and other sporting options for all skill levels, as well as a general bootcamp for those seeking to improve fitness, build strength, or maintain a healthy weight.
The program extended its impact through outings and excursions, providing young people with new experiences and opportunities to explore their interests and connect with peers. The increased variety of sports sessions created a dynamic environment that appealed to a wide range of participants.
Through these initiatives, B Young Stars made a tangible impact on the lives of young people, encouraging healthy lifestyles, building confidence, and fostering a sense of community. By combining education and physical activity, the program empowered young people to achieve their potential and thrive in a supportive and inclusive setting.

## **Overall Stats for Universal, Focus, HAF and Ukraine Program**
The graphs below showcase how B Young Stars reach grew over the years, engaging with young people and adults from a variety of backgrounds.
## **Gender**
In 2016/17, only 34% of participants were female, the female participation increased to 45%. The staff recently recruited to deliver the programme are more representative of the local community than at the start of the organisation.

## **Ethnicity**
As shown in the chart above, the program now attracts young people from a broader range of ethnic backgrounds. This shift can be attributed to the delivery of tutoring across various youth clubs and areas, each with its own ethnic diversity. Initially, the project primarily served the Somali community in Woolwich. However, as the program expanded into new geographic areas and the recruitment for tutoring was carried out borough-wide, B Young Stars' reach grew significantly, becoming more reflective of the diverse community in Greenwich as a whole.
## **Volunteering 2023/24**
In 2023/24, B Young Stars saw a strong commitment to volunteering, with 9 young people contributing 280 hours and 10 adults offering 560 hours of service. As part of the Young Greenwich funding, the organisation was invited to collaborate with Volunteer Centre Greenwich to review policies and enhance volunteer support. This partnership helped build the confidence of both young people and adults, providing valuable volunteering experiences. Volunteers played a vital role in supporting the organization across various areas, including teaching assistance, administrative tasks, and managing social media, making a significant impact on the overall success of the program.

## **Accreditations/Qualifications**
In 2023/24, a total of 36 young people achieved accreditations or qualifications through their participation in B Young Stars' programs, demonstrating the positive impact and value of the educational and developmental opportunities provided.
## **Outcomes/Feedback**
In 2023/24, B Young Stars achieved significant positive outcomes based on feedback from young people. 43% of participants reported an improvement in their mental health, while 37% noted enhanced growth mindset and resilience. Additionally, 54% of the young people shared that their attitudes and perceptions toward education had improved, highlighting the program's success in fostering personal development and encouraging a positive outlook on learning.
## **Social Value**
The B Young Stars programme delivered significant social value, generating £6.93 in social impact for every £1 spent, resulting in a total social value of £399,000. This remarkable return on investment highlights the programme’s key achievements, including improved mental health and well-being, enhanced attitudes toward education, and opportunities for volunteering. By fostering personal growth and community engagement, the programme not only transformed the lives of participants but also contributed positively to the broader community.

## **1. Statutory Information**
B young Stars Ltd is a charitable company limted by gaurantee. The charity's registered company number, registered charity number, registered office and the nature of it's activities can be found in the Trustees Report.
The presentation currency of the financial statements is Pounds Sterling (£)
## **2. Accounting policies**
## **Basis of preparing the financial statements**
The financial statements of the charitable company, which is a public benefit entity under FRS 102, have been prepared in accordance with the Charities SORP (FRS 102) 'Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2019)', Financial Reporting Standard 102 'The Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland' and the Companies Act 2006. The financial statements have been prepared under the historical cost convention.
## **Critical accounting judgements and key sources of estimation uncertainty**
No critical accounting judgements have been made in the process of applying the accounting policies below.
There are no key assumptions concerning the future and other key sources of estimation uncertainty at the reporting date that have a significant risk of causing a material adjustment to the carrying amounts of assets and liabilities within the next financial year.
## **Going concern**
At the time of approving the financial statements, the trustees have a reasonable expectation that the charity has adequate resources to continue in operational existence for the foreseeable future. Thus the trustees continue to adopt the going concern basis of accounting in preparing the financial statements.
## **Income**
All income is recognised in the Statement of Financial Activities once the charity has entitlement to the funds, it is probable that the income will be received and the amount can be measured reliably.
## **Government grants**
Government grants are recognised under the performance model. The grant income is recognised upon performance conditions being satisfied (and should it be received in advance of satisfying the performance, recognition of the income is deferred as a liability) and where there are no specific future performance-related conditions then grants are recognised when proceeds are received or receivable.
## **Donations**
For donations to be recognised the charity will have been notified of the amounts and the settlement date in writing. If there are conditions attached to the donation and this requires a level of performance before entitlement can be obtained then income is deferred until those conditions are fully met or the fulfilment of those conditions is within the control of the charity and it is probable that they will be fulfilled.
## **Trading activities**
Income from trading activities includes income earned from trading activities to raise funds for the charity. Income is received in exchange for supplying goods and services in order to raise funds and is recognised when entitlement has occurred.
## **Charitable Activities**
The charity receives corporate grants in respect of agreed projects. Income from grants is recognised at fair value when the charity has entitlement after any performance conditions have been met, it is probable that the income will be received and the amount can be measured reliably. If entitlement is not met then these amounts are deferred.
## **Expenditure**
Liabilities are recognised as expenditure as soon as there is a legal or constructive obligation committing the charity to that expenditure, it is probable that a transfer of economic benefits will be required in settlement and the amount of the obligation can be measured reliably. Expenditure is accounted for on an accruals basis and has been classified under headings that aggregate all costs related to the category. Where
## **Allocation and apportionment of costs**
Support costs are those that assist the work of the charity but do not directly represent charitable activities and include office costs and governance costs. They are incurred directly in support of expenditure on the objects of the charity and include project management. Where support costs cannot be directly attributed to particular headings they have been allocated to cost of raising funds and expenditure on charitable activities on a basis consistent with use of the resources.

## **Taxation**
The charity is exempt from corporation tax on its charitabe activities.
## **Fund Accounting**
Unrestricted funds can be used in accordance with the charitable objectives at the discretion of the trustees.
Restricted funds can only be used for particular restricted purposes within the objects of the charity. Restrictions arise when specified by the donor or when funds are raised for particular restricted purposes. The cost of raising and administering such funds are charged against the specific fund.
Further explanation of the nature and purpose of each fund is included in the notes to the financial statements.
## **Debtors and creditors**
Debtors and creditors with no stated interest rate and receivable or payable within one year are recorded at transaction price. Any losses arising from impairment are recognised in expenditure.

Abdigani Mohamoud, one of the trustees, has provided an interest free loan to the charity of £4,632.
Abdigani Mohamoud received remuneration of £2,815 for his services in the capcity of a contractor delivering mentoring and football coaching. A person connected with Abdigani Mohamoud is employed by the charity to provide educational services receiving remuneration of £10,802 in the year.
Hodan Yusuf, one of the trustees, received remuneration of £1,270 for his services in the capcity of a contrator delivering eductaional activities.
