## **Salford Children’s Holiday Camp**

## **Trustees Annual Report for the year ended 31[st] March 2024**

The trustees present their annual report and financial statements for the year ended 31[st] March 2024 .

## **Objectives and Activities**

The objects of the charity as per its constitution dated 22[nd] September 2022 are:

The relief of those in need by reason of financial hardship by providing low cost holidays and educational breaks for children, young carers and their families that they otherwise could not afford **.**

The main purpose of the charity is to provide a seaside holiday for disadvantaged children from the City of Salford.

The main objectives of the charity are:

- Provide suitable residential accommodation for young people and their care teams.

- To provide a full meals package for all groups that are enjoyable and cost efficient.

- To raise funds to enable the Camp to continue to do this for future years.

The trustees have had to regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit in carrying out its activities.

## **Change of charity status**

The charity was registered as a Foundation Charitable Incorporated Organisation on 22[nd] September 2022. The activities of the charity were previously carried out by the previous unincorporated charity of the same name. In due course, once all assets have ben transferred, the former charity will be dissolved. Comparative amounts in the financial statements were included in the former charity accounts.

## **Contribution made by volunteers**

The trustees and management committee consists of volunteers, some of those who work strategically in fund raising, and publicising the camp, those who directly impact on the organisation, administration and management of the Camp, and together confirm the prioritisation on the funds raised in maintaining and developing the facilities and presentation of the site and buildings.

## **Achievements and Performance**

During the period of the report, a total of 742 visitors stayed at the camp including 627 from Salford. This represents again a significant increase in both the number of young people attending the camp but also a significant increase in the percentage from within the City of Salford for 2023/2024. This was mainly due to new schools that had repeat booked from the previous year along with some schools attending multiple times. Over 90% of the visitors to camp in the period of the report are from the City of Salford. This is in keeping with our objectives of increasing the attendance at camp from those living or attending school in the City of Salford.

The camp hosted 47 disadvantaged children from outside the City of Salford, more than double on the previous year as we utilise weeks where the camp would otherwise have no bookings from Salford groups, thus continuing with our efforts on boosting sustainability.

Attendance at the camp was the highest we have seen since Covid19 restrictions and we hope to build on this moving forward. The Community café continued on Wednesdays and is still a vital asset amongst the local people and we hosted the Denbighshire council ‘warm hub’ programme again on Tuesdays, providing a safe and warm place for people to meet, providing soup along with coffee, tea and biscuits. Our commitment to providing a service for two days a week helped supporting local people within the Prestatyn community through the energy and cost of living crisis. This work supports our objective of utilising the community room to support people of all ages, particularly the elderly, where poverty or loneliness impact daily lives.

Our thoughts go out to the family of the late Harold Riley, the renowned Artist from Salford who was the Deputy Lieutenant of Greater Manchester from 1984 until his death along with being given the Freedom of the City of Salford in 2017. Harold had supported the charity previously and we thank all of his family and friends for their kind obituary donations to Salford Children’s Holiday Camp. We would also like to thank the Trustees of Oliver ’68 who upon winding up their charity were looking to distribute donations to likewise institutions and chose Salford Children’s Holiday Camp as one of their benefactors. We would also like to express our gratitude and sincere thanks to the Late Barbara Grylls who bequeathed a significant sum of money to the charity which has now been partially distributed by her solicitors following probate and can be used for improvements and investment in infrastructure at the camp.

The charity continues to expand the board of Trustees and those with specialist skills as we look towards the future and our masterplan of creating a modern, fully accessible site for all, with the best possible management structure in place to support the charity as we progress into 2024/ 2025 with fundraising being a priority to ensure we can improve our facilities for the children of Salford.

## **Financial Review**

Total receipts in the year amounted to £230,682 – an increase from £71,805 in 2022/23. This was due to £105,673 in legacies/memorial gifts and £40,000 from one off donations. Income from site users increased.

## **Reserves policy**

We aim to hold 3 month running costs in reserve. Surplus funds are held to develop the site further, and some progress was made in the financial year on this. Included within the reserves are funds being expensed in the following financial year.

## **Amount held in reserves**

Cash unrestricted reserves are £257,087. Surplus funds are held for the future development of the site and the charity.

## **Structure, Governance and Management**

## **Risk**

The trustees review the risks faced by the charity and put in place plans to mitigate these. Safeguarding policies are maintained with DBS checks carried out as required.

## **Governance**

The charity is governed by its constitution. A management committee is in place that supports the staff and volunteers in the work of the camp, and from this group the trustees are appointed.
