## Shirikiana CIO Annual Report ## Year Two 6[th] April 2023 – 5[th] April 2024 The focus of our work for Year Two has been the ‘The Mukuru Junior Secondary School Project’ and adjacent Toilet Block, which has taken our on-going support of The Mukuru Outreach Academy on to another level. The project has been developed to enable the Mukuru Academy to meet all the necessary government requirements to apply for Junior Secondary School Status. This status will make it possible for all the children within the community to have access to a comprehensive education path, which will, in turn, open up greater possibilities for apprenticeship and employment. The project comprises of a new two storey building that houses a library, a science laboratory, a computer room and a small administration office, together with accommodation for three new classes of secondary pupils. The Academy currently has a class of 45 grade 6 pupils who will now be able to proceed to the new Junior Secondary forms 7, 8 and 9 after sitting for their national KEPSEA exams (Kenya Primary School Examination Assessment). However, the true number is expected to be far higher. This is due to the fact that many pupils from the previous academic year (2022), who have already excelled in their national exams, having been unable to continue to secondary schools in other locations. Despite this, they are keen to return to the Mukuru Outreach Academy to continue their studies. This has been confirmed by both the pupils and their parents. The realisation of this project is a dream come true for both the school and the community and is a significant step forward for the school’s vision of providing both high quality affordable education for the children, and much needed hope for the population of Mukuru. Not least, the Junior Secondary School Project represents the celebration of 15 years of commitment, faith and dedicated hard work on the part of everyone involved in Mukuru Outreach Kenya. ## ------- Following on from months of consultation with the Mukuru Academy regarding plans and costings and timescales etc. – our practical work began in September 2023 with a large musical fundraising event. The astonishing response to this event meant that – together with some large donations from one or two regular donors and a grant from the Earthsong Foundation – we were able to raise the required amount to cover the cost of Phase One of the project i.e. the construction of the building itself. Phase Two and Three will cover all the necessary work needed to complete the Secondary School Project, which we anticipate will be ready for the beginning of the next Academic school year 2025 – 2026.
