MISSION STATEMENT

We are dedicated to finding the perfect home for every dog we rescue. Entirely run and staffed by volunteers, our mission is driven by love, compassion, and a commitment to giving each dog the best possible life.

Annual Report 2024 2

TRUSTEE REPORT

Overview

In our second full year as a registered charity, we have gone from strength to strength. Increased exposure, fundraising efforts, and generous donations have enabled us to rehome more dogs than ever before. None of this would have been possible without the tireless dedication of our homing team, our kennel volunteers, our events and social media team, and our invaluable foster carers.

Financial Summary

The 2023/24 financial year saw an exceptional rise in donations, thanks to the generosity of the Haslemere Dog Training Group, the Walsh family, Miss Doolittle’s charity shop, and the St. Luke’s Church Women’s Group, as well as the many donors who give whatever they can on a regular basis. In addition, our fundraising income increased by 46% compared with the previous year, with our summer sale proving especially successful.

A new washroom was built to provide a safe space for bathing and grooming the dogs, and we also upgraded the kennel garden lighting along with other facilities to improve the dogs’ environment.

Looking Ahead

As we move into 2025, we remain committed to supporting local council rescue services while also strengthening partnerships with overseas rescues by offering kennel space for their dogs. We will continue to expand our foster network, helping dogs to socialise and thrive before finding their forever homes.

Conclusion

The growing support of our volunteers and donors has enabled the rescue to flourish this year and continue its vital work. We are deeply grateful to each and every one of you for your generosity, compassion, and commitment.

We look forward to building on this success in the year ahead.

Operational Improvements

Thanks to the dedication of volunteers who gave their time freely, we were able to make several improvements at very little cost.

THE FOCUS OF OUR WORK

BETWEEN 01 NOVEMBER 23 AND 31 OCTOBER 24

ENSURING OUR WORK DELIVERS OUR AIMS

97 DOGS HOMED

The main objectives of the year continued to be relieving the suffering of unwanted dogs, by bringing them into our care, and finding them the right forever home that enables them to flourish.

We homed 97 dogs, which comprised 32 from UK shelters or owner surrenders and 65 from abroad.

SUPPORTING LOCAL RESCUES

In addition to the dogs we home directly, Helping Hounds works with other local rescues, providing them with kennel space for their dogs until homes are found. This is done at no charge to these rescues, and we provide food and volunteer resources to care for the dogs.

INTERNATIONAL OUTREACH: ROMANIA

SPAY & NEUTER CAMPAIGN

In September 2024, five Helping Hounds Hampshire volunteers travelled to Romania to support a targeted spay and neuter initiative aimed at reducing the suffering of unwanted dogs and cats.

118 ANIMALS SPAYED

Volunteers travelled to Romania to support a targeted spay and neuter initiative

Over 100 residents brought their pets for microsurgery procedures

Our volunteers played an active role throughout the campaign

The campaign met our charitable objective:

To relieve animal suffering through proactive care and longterm solutions.

Our local contact, Anca coordinated the event at a community hall

The minimally invasive microsurgery procedure, performed by a skilled veterinary team ensures a swift recovery and reduces stress for the animals.

The trip concluded with a donation of 30 crates and essential pet food to a local animal hospital , Centre for Hope, all transported from the UK in our charity van.

We remain committed

Our aim is to continue supporting campaigns to reduce the stray dog population both in the UK and abroad through ongoing collaboration.

Annual Report 2024 7

WHY SPAYING MATTERS

The long-term impact of spaying is profound - a single fertile female and her her offspring can result in the birth of up to 12,288 dogs over five years and up to 67,000 over seven years.

This preventative approach is a vital part of our mission to reduce suffering and promote flourishing lives for dogs in need.

TESS & MILLIE’S STORY

In November 2023, Millie and Tess, a pair of 9-year-old Shar Pei-Collie crosses, suddenly lost the only home they’d ever known, when their beloved owner had to move into a care facility. With no one in the family able to take them in, we didn’t hesitate to offer them a place with us.

The thought of these gentle souls possibly being put to sleep wasn’t an option, and we were determined to give them the second chance they deserved.

They hadn’t been walked in some time

When they arrived, they were significantly overweight and it was clear they hadn’t been regularly walked. They were understandably confused by their new situation, so we began gently introducing them to long walks, fresh air, and the rhythm of life at the rescue. Slowly but surely, they began to enjoy life again — exploring on trips to the freedom fields, sniffing the breeze, and learning that love still surrounded them.

Searching for a home

We were willing to sponsor the girls in a permanent foster home, but there was no interest in the pair. As large and very strong dogs, who had not been well-socialised, they were a difficult duo to home. They are deeply bonded so homing them separately was not an option, so we decided they would have a permanent home with us!

Tucked away in a quieter part of the rescue is a small cabin with its own garden. We’ve made it into a true home with a comfy sofa, a TV for background comfort, and even an air conditioning unit for those warmer days. It’s their sanctuary now, and they absolutely thrive there. They are adored, enjoy regular long walks, freedom field trips, and even occasional sleepovers with our volunteers!

RESCUE ISN’T JUST ABOUT REHOMING

It’s about dignity, devotion, and doing whatever it takes to give every dog the life they deserve.

ABOUT US

Helping Hounds is a dog charity dedicated to finding the perfect home for every dog. Entirely volunteer managed and run, our kennels are based in Grayshott, with a network of fosterers in the surrounding area.

Purposes and aims

The main objective of the charity is to relieve the suffering of abandoned and neglected dogs by rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming dogs from the UK and abroad.

Compassion knows no borders

We believe every dog deserves a loving home, regardless of where they come from. That's why we rescue and rehome owner-surrendered or abandoned dogs from the UK, but also as far afield as Romania, Greece, Cyprus and even Egypt.

Our approach

We’re not in a hurry to rehome our dogs; instead, we focus on building their trust, confidence, and social skills while they stay with us. Our kennels provide a safe and nurturing environment for as long as it takes to prepare each dog for their forever home and our network of foster homes enables us to maximize our ability to assist as many dogs as possible. Our foster homes play a crucial role in our mission, providing temporary, loving home environments where dogs can thrive while waiting for their forever homes.

Our commitment

Every dog we rescue is unique, and so is our approach to finding them the right home. We take the time to understand each dog's personality, needs, and quirks, ensuring they find a family that suits them perfectly.

Join us in our mission to rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome dogs in need. Together, we can make a difference, one wagging tail at a time. Thank you for your support and compassion!
