## **A message from our trustees**

**We’re proud to present our first financial report! It’s been an amazing first year as a registered charity, and it would not have been possible without the perseverance and dedication of so many individuals. Our gratitude to everyone who has been part of this incredible journey.**

## TRUSTEE REPORT

## **Overview**

The past financial year has presented unique challenges for our dog charity, similar to those faced by many other rescue organizations. The impact of Covid-19 has been particularly significant, affecting our operations, volunteer inductions, and the staffing of our kennels. Despite these obstacles, our commitment to rescuing and rehoming dogs has remained steadfast.

## I **mpact of Covid-19**

The pandemic disrupted our ability to conduct volunteer inductions and maintain a fully staffed kennel. This hindered our capacity to provide the necessary care and attention to dogs in our shelter and we had to scale back on the number of dogs we could take on.

## **Government Regulations and International Rescue Efforts**

The government's suspension of the import of rescue animals from Romania was a significant setback. This policy severely limited the number of dogs we could save from inhumane conditions, which was disheartening for our dedicated volunteers and rescuers. However, we managed to alleviate some pressure on our international partners by sending donations of food and money, ensuring they could continue their vital work.

We continue to work with a select group of trusted rescuers and veterinarians abroad. This collaboration ensures that any dogs we import undergo all necessary health checks, tests, and vaccinations, maintaining our high standards of animal welfare.

**Annual Report 2023 3**

## **Increased Stray and Abandoned Dogs**

The rise in dog ownership during the pandemic has led to an increase in stray and abandoned dogs. Our rescue efforts have focused on rehoming dogs who have been been taken in by council stray dog kennels in Hampshire. This approach has resulted in higher veterinary expenses, as many of the adult dogs arrived unneutered and with various health issues, including illnesses and untreated injuries.

## **Financial Challenges**

The financial year has been challenging, with our costs exceeding our income due to increased veterinary expenses and the difficulties of fundraising in a tough economic climate. However, we have maintained a reserve fund and are exploring more creative fundraising strategies for the next financial year.

These enhancements have provided better enrichment and socialization opportunities for the dogs in our care. The generosity of our volunteers, who carried out the improvements in their spare time played a crucial role in these upgrades.

## **Looking Ahead**

As we move forward, we remain committed to our mission of rescuing and rehoming dogs in need. We will continue to explore innovative fundraising methods and strengthen our partnerships with international rescuers and veterinarians. Our focus will remain on providing the best possible care for the dogs in our shelter and finding loving homes for each one, as well as supporting spay and neuter campaigns in Romania.

## **Conclusion**

## **Operational Improvements**

Despite financial constraints, strict control of other expenses allowed us to make significant improvements to our kennel space.

while the past year has been fraught with challenges, our resilience and the unwavering support of our volunteers and donors have enabled us to continue our important work. We are truly grateful for each and every one of you.

We look forward to a brighter year ahead, with renewed efforts and a steadfast commitment to our cause.

## KENNEL GARDEN EXTENSION

During the course of the year, we upgraded and increased the size of our secure, enclosed kennel garden, allowing our dogs supervised freedom and more space to be outside to play and socialise.

Work began in August and was carried out by our dedicated volunteers, under the guidance of professional builder, John Harrison, who is also our maintenance manager.

## **Works included:**

- a concrete foundation new astroturf

- new secure fencing

- a second entry door was added for increased security,

- mesh added to doors on kennel runs and panels between kennels

- a new dog washing facility and toilet block was built between the kennel garden and summerhouse, which also provides us with additional storage.

## **PROFILE AND FUND RAISING EVENTS**

## **2nd January 23 – Adopter and Volunteer Walk**

This popular bi-annual event, held at Devils Punchbowl, with permission from the National Trust, gives us an opportunity to catch up with our adopters and their dogs. Most importantly, the volunteers get to see the benefits of the hard work they do for the rescue and give their particular favourite dogs another cuddle! It’s extremely rewarding for all concerned and reassures our adopters that they are always a part of the Helping Hounds family. Additionally, we’re able to promote the rescue to other walkers we meet along the way, and a raffle at the end of the walk raises a small amount of funds.

**Annual Report 2023 10**

## **30th March 23 – Fox and Pelican Quiz night**

We were the nominated charity for The Fox and Pelican’s monthly pub quiz. This popular Grayshott pub invited us along to promote the rescue and collect donations. It was a fun night and the Helping Hounds quiz team not only won joint first place with another team in the quiz, but also donated their winnings to the rescue, and persuaded the other team to do the same! A profitable night by all accounts.

## **28th / 29th May 23 – Hidden Gardens of Grayshott**

To raise the profile of the rescue, our volunteers attended the Grayshott Hidden Gardens event, providing water, treats, poo bags and poo bins for visitors who brought their dogs.

## **9th June 23 – Waitrose Collections**

We were invited to collect donations outside the Waitrose store in Guildford, giving our volunteers the opportunity to chat with the public about the rescue, and collect muchneeded cash donations. We also trialled a doggy food bank and were stunned by the generosity of Waitrose shoppers! It took two wheelbarrow trips to get it from a car to the kennels.

## **24th June - White Eagle Summer Lodge**

This was another open day which gave the rescue an opportunity to raise awareness and some funds.

**Annual Report 2023 11**

## **5th June – Volunteer Social**

An opportunity for our volunteers to get together, with a small kitty funded by the Trustees behind the bar. The Fox and Pelican allowed us to bring our own light snacks so there was no cost to the volunteers or the rescue. The core team were introduced, and there were brief presentations on the history of the rescue and health and safety. A small fundraising raffle was held.

## **21 October 23 – Helping Hounds Quiz Night**

This is one of our most successful and profitable fundraising events. This particular evening raised the most of any of our events and is a fun evening, planned and hosted by one of amazing core team, who funds the costs herself, so any revenue is pure profit for the rescue. For the price of a ticket, quizzers get a meal and entertainment, an opportunity to test their wits against each other, and chance to win great donated prizes in a raffle.

**Lea Scaddan**

## **22 October 23 – Calendar shoot.**

Australian professional wildlife photographer, Leanne Scaddan donated her time to photograph and design our 2024 calendar, which featured our volunteer’s dogs.

30 Dogs came along with their owners for the shoot, which took place in a volunteer’s private garden. In addition to raising some funds for the rescue, the calendar also provided us with a give-away for some of our top supporters and of course serves as a constant reminder to recipients of our rescue and the work we do, for the whole calendar year!

## ABOUT US

**Helping Hounds is a dog charity dedicated to finding the perfect home for every dog. Entirely volunteer managed and run, our kennels are based in Grayshott, with a network of fosterers in the surrounding area.**

## **Purposes and aims**

The main objective of the charity is to relieve the suffering of abandoned and neglected dogs by rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming dogs from the UK and abroad.

## **Compassion knows no borders**

We believe every dog deserves a loving home, regardless of where they come from. That's why we rescue and rehome owner-surrendered or abandoned dogs from the UK, but also as far afield as Romania, Greece, Cyprus and even Egypt.

## **Our approach**

We’re not in a hurry to rehome our dogs; instead, we focus on building their trust, confidence, and social skills while they stay with us. Our kennels provide a safe and nurturing environment for as long as it takes to prepare each dog for their forever home and our network of foster homes enables us to maximize our ability to assist as many dogs as possible. Our foster homes play a crucial role in our mission, providing temporary, loving home environments where dogs can thrive while waiting for their forever homes.

## **Our commitment**

Every dog we rescue is unique, and so is our approach to finding them the right home. We take the time to understand each dog's personality, needs, and quirks, ensuring they find a family that suits them perfectly.

Join us in our mission to rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome dogs in need. Together, we can make a difference, one wagging tail at a time. Thank you for your support and compassion!
