## **DENMEAD COMMUNITY CENTRE CIO**

**Charity Number: 1200225**

## **TRUSTEES’ ANNUAL REPORT AND CLOSING ACCOUNTS**

**For the financial year ended 31 December 2025**

## **Introduction**

The Trustees of **Denmead Community Centre CIO** are pleased to present their Annual Report and Closing Accounts for the financial year from **1 January 2025 to 31 December 2025** .

Denmead Community Centre CIO commenced trading in March 2023 and continues to develop as an important community organisation serving the residents of Denmead and the surrounding area.

The Centre is managed by a Board of nine Trustees, supported by four employed members of staff and a substantial team of volunteers. The Trustees would like to place on record their sincere thanks to all staff, volunteers, hirers, supporters and local organisations who have contributed to the successful operation of the Centre during the year.

The Centre could not provide the range of activities and services it currently offers without the commitment of its volunteers. During 2025, approximately 40 volunteers were involved in supporting the Centre in various capacities.

Every volunteer contribution is valued, and collectively these volunteers play a critical role in maintaining the Centre as a welcoming, active and sustainable community facility.

## **Our Charitable Objectives**

The principal objectives of Denmead Community Centre CIO remain:

## **To preserve and promote the Old School building, one of Denmead's most cherished buildings, as a multi-disciplinary Community Centre providing and promoting rental space for recreation, leisure and education for the benefit of the local community.**

The Trustees remain committed to preserving the historic Old School building while ensuring that it continues to provide a modern, accessible and financially sustainable facility for the community.

The Centre comprises seven rooms and three kitchens, one of which is professionally fitted, and provides space for a wide range of community, recreational, educational and support activities.

## **Activities and Community Use**

The Centre continued to be extensively used throughout 2025 averaging 1,400 visitors per week.

Activities accommodated during the year included infant and toddler groups, pre-school activities, yoga, Pilates, language lessons, art classes, upholstery classes, table tennis, judo, counselling and care services, together with a wide range of other community activities.

A pre-school continues to operate at the Centre from **8.00am to 5.00pm, four days per week during school terms** , providing an important service to local families.

The Centre also continues to provide a home for several established local organisations.

These include the **Denmead Brass Band** , an award-winning organisation which has been an important part of the village community for many years.

The Centre is also home to **Southern Arts Academy** , which has more than 100 students. The Academy includes the Under-21 National Dance Squad, whose members have achieved considerable success in national competitions. Their awards and achievements are proudly displayed within the Centre.

The range and diversity of activities taking place at the Centre demonstrate its importance as a community facility and reinforce the Trustees' commitment to ensuring that the building remains available for the benefit of Denmead residents.

## **Community Impact**

The Centre continues to provide a significant range of services and opportunities for local residents.

In addition to regular room hire and community activities, the Centre provides facilities for:

- Children and pre-school groups.

- Youth activities and dance.

- Fitness and wellbeing activities.

- Educational and recreational classes.

- Arts and creative activities.

- Table tennis and other sporting activities.

- Counselling and support services.

- Activities for older residents.

- Community social events.

- Fundraising and charitable activities.

The Centre also operates a weekly luncheon club for elderly residents, supported by a dedicated

team of volunteers.

The Community Produce Garden has continued to develop and provides another opportunity for community involvement while encouraging gardening, social interaction and the sharing of produce.

The Trustees are particularly pleased that the Centre continues to bring together people of different ages and backgrounds and remains a focal point for community activity within Denmead.

## **Fundraising**

As Denmead Community Centre CIO receives **no regular government funding** , the Trustees rely upon income from room hire, grants, donations and fundraising activities to maintain and develop the Centre.

Fundraising therefore remains an essential part of the Centre's financial sustainability.

Two significant fundraising events are held each year.

## **Proms in the Park and Denmead Beer Festival**

The annual **Proms in the Park** event, held in July, provides an important opportunity for the local community to come together while also raising funds for the Centre.

The **Denmead Beer Festival** is held in October, remains the Centre's most important annual fundraising event.

## **Premises and Property**

The Trustees' principal responsibility is to ensure that the Old School building is preserved, maintained and operated in a manner that allows it to continue serving the community.

The Trustees recognise the importance of maintaining the building in a manner that is both financially and environmentally sustainable.

One of the longer-term objectives is to replace the existing gas central-heating system with an **airsource heating system** , subject to suitable funding, technical assessment and affordability.

Such a system has the potential to provide both heating and cooling and would represent an important step towards improving the Centre's environmental performance and reducing its reliance on fossil fuels.

## **Staff**

The Trustees recognise the important contribution made by the Centre's employees.

During 2025, staff continued to support the day-to-day operation of the Centre, including administration, room bookings, customer liaison, building management, financial administration, event support and general operational duties.

The Trustees are grateful for the commitment and flexibility demonstrated by staff throughout the year and continue to review staffing requirements to ensure that the Centre has the appropriate resources to provide an effective service while maintaining proper control of expenditure.

## **Volunteers**

Volunteers remain fundamental to the success of Denmead Community Centre.

Without their contribution, it would not be possible to provide many of the activities and services currently available.

The Trustees therefore wish to formally acknowledge and thank every volunteer who has contributed during the year.

## **Governance and Management**

Denmead Community Centre CIO is governed by its Board of Trustees in accordance with its Constitution and applicable charity law.

The Trustees are conscious of their responsibilities as custodians of an important community asset and remain committed to ensuring that decisions are made in the best interests of the charity and the community it serves.

## **Financial Review**

The financial year ended **31 December 2025** represented another year of consolidation and development for Denmead Community Centre CIO.

The charity's principal sources of income continue to be:

- Room and facility hire.

- Fundraising activities.

- Donations.

- Grants.

- Other community and charitable income.

The Centre receives no regular government funding and therefore remains dependent upon generating sufficient income to meet its operating costs, maintain the building and invest in its future.

The Trustees continued to exercise careful control over expenditure during the year while recognising that expenditure on the maintenance and protection of the building is essential.

The Trustees will continue to monitor cash flow, operating costs and capital expenditure carefully and will seek additional grant and fundraising opportunities wherever appropriate.

## **Financial results**

The detailed financial statements for the year ended 31 December 2025 are presented alongside this report.

The Trustees consider that the charity remains appropriately positioned to continue its activities and meet its foreseeable obligations, subject to continued prudent financial management and successful generation of income.

The Centre operates from an ageing historic building which can require significant and sometimes unforeseen expenditure. It is therefore important that the charity retains sufficient funds to meet its ongoing commitments and respond to essential repairs and maintenance.

The Trustees regularly review the level of reserves against the charity's anticipated expenditure, financial commitments and future maintenance requirements.

## **Risk Management**

The Trustees regularly consider the principal risks facing the charity.

These include:

- Financial sustainability.

- Building maintenance and major repairs.

- Reliance upon room-hire income and fundraising.

- Health and safety.

- Safeguarding.

- Staffing and volunteer availability.

- Compliance with legal and regulatory requirements.

- Unexpected expenditure associated with the historic building.

The Trustees seek to manage these risks through regular Board oversight, financial monitoring, appropriate insurance, maintenance planning, staff supervision and the implementation of suitable policies and procedures.

The Trustees consider that the principal risks are understood and are being appropriately managed.

## **Objectives and Priorities for 2026**

## The Trustees enter 2026 with a clear objective: **to preserve, improve and safeguard Denmead's community-owned key building and ensure that it remains available for the benefit of current and future generations.**

The principal priorities include:

1. Continuing to maintain and protect the Old School building.

2. Maintaining the Centre's strong programme of community activities.

3. Continuing to develop fundraising activities and relationships with local businesses and community organisations.

4. Developing the Community Produce Garden.

5. Exploring opportunities to improve the building's energy efficiency.

6. Progressing the consideration of an air-source heating and cooling system.

7. Exploring future options for the approved first-floor accommodation extension.

8. Continuing to improve the Centre's financial resilience.

9. Supporting and developing staff and volunteers.

10. Continuing to work constructively with Denmead Parish Council and other local organisations for the benefit of the community.

The Trustees will also continue to consider opportunities to improve the Centre's facilities and increase the number and diversity of activities available to residents.

## **Trustees' Statement**

The Trustees are proud of the progress made by Denmead Community Centre CIO since it commenced trading in March 2023.

The Centre has developed into a busy and valued community facility, providing space and support for a wide range of activities and organisations.

This has only been possible through the combined efforts of the Trustees, staff, volunteers, hirers, local businesses, sponsors and members of the community.

The Trustees would like to thank everyone who has supported the Centre during 2025.

In particular, we acknowledge the many volunteers who give their time freely and without whom much of the Centre's community work simply would not be possible.

The Trustees remain committed to ensuring that Denmead Community Centre continues to be a well-managed, financially responsible and sustainable charity, while preserving the historic Old School building as an important community asset.

Our overriding objective remains:

**To preserve, improve and safeguard Denmead's community-owned number one key building and ensure that it continues to serve the community for many years to come.**
