## **Chair Report for Greenhavens AGM 23/5/2024**

Hi everyone Introduced myself and role Housekeeping

It’s great to see you tonight, thank you for coming and I hope we will all have the opportunity to enjoy this unusual venue. I don’t know if anyone arrived by train or bicycle or on foot and if you have had time to see the station and walk the short distance to our wonderful Ouse?

Thank you to YHA Southease for making us so welcome, and bringing back good memories of a couple of the first meetings I attended when I moved back to East Sussex and started my job 5 and a half years ago.

I am so looking forward to hearing the presentation by Alex and Amy from Weald to Waves!

And to finding out about all of your projects and having the chance to mingle and chat before we end the evening at 9pm.

So, where do I start? Looking back at the last year it has honestly been a blur and I cant believe that it has actually been one year since we all met at Bishopstone Station and were hosted by the amazing FOBS – Jim is with us again this evening.

Greenhavens has continued with many of the activities and events we have found so wanted and well attended over the years, but we have also made so many new connections and attended events for the first time.

The ecological and green diversity and will in our area is growing all of the time. New groups and projects are forging ahead and encouraging a much wider audience to experience and take part in the change in our communities.

We now have climate hubs in our towns which attract new interest every week. We have community gardens that encourage local support and provide havens for families, those

who are isolated and those who are struggling in our fast paced world.

We have community orchards that provide us with venues for our beautiful blossom walks but take a lot of work and need our constant protection. Some incredible environmental work connected to our land and local waterways- the Wild Ouse Network, Sussex Kelp Recovery, the dolphin project and of course – Weald to Waves.

There are so many organisations trying to help those in need. Foodbanks, food partnerships, warm spaces, community hubs, diverse groups offering as much support in these very difficult financial times as they can.

These are exciting times and at Greenhavens we want to encourage all of the groups and work going on. New initiatives and change also lead to a little anxiety and the thought of how do we “move with the times” and ensure we are still relevant in our world. Something we are still grappling with at Greenhavens.

Certainly the plan is to reach out to as many people and communities as possible. Those who wouldn’t generally be aware or connected to our wonderful wildlife and environment. We also need to protect those who are possibly too aware of the damage being caused in our world and are experiencing fear for the future. Watch this space!

We are going to be at many of the fairs and events during the Summer so please come and chat to us – tell us what you want.

We have seen change within Greenhavens too this year. We sadly said goodbye to Miriam as one of our Coordinators, but were so excited for her following her dream of creating the very special Peverells Community Garden in Seaford. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Miriam publicly for all of her hard work and look forward to seeing what comes next ……

Following a busy year my thanks to the amazing Jessie who wears so many important hats but we couldn’t do without her knowledge and energy as our coordinator. To my fellow Trustees George, Pam and Lesley who always give 150%, even after the longest, busiest of days. Special thanks to Lesley for stepping into the empty coordinator role and I should mention has a new title – Chair of Lewes District Council. So Congratulations. And a huge thank you to them all.

Finally just to say thank you all for coming this evening, I hope you enjoy it and we look forward to hearing from you too.
