Trustees:

We have had a movement of trustees in this past year, mostly due to geographical movement and personal circumstances. We aim to recruit new trustees after our AGM.

Day to day running of the club:

Officers are elected at the annual AGM. The committee meets once a month.

The coxswain lead, Louise Thomas, is responsible for collating all coxes & with the team of Chris Cope & Anna Murphy, they assess the development of the coxes progressing them through a tiered system.

About the club:

Pendeen PGC is an amateur Cornish pilot gig rowing club based in the heart of Newlyn, Cornwall.

We operate three plastic training gigs moored in Newlyn Harbour, while our two wooden racing gigs are housed in our boat shed near Geevor Mine in Pendeen.

One of our training gigs, Silent Mountain , was built in memory of a young man who was a valued member of our club. This boat is designated as a community gig and is available for hire by other clubs, charities, and community groups through a booking system.

Throughout the year, we organise a range of social events and actively encourage all members to take part in the care and maintenance of our boats and equipment. This shared responsibility helps build strong teamwork and fosters a deeper understanding and respect for our gigs and equipment.

We operate under a robust safeguarding policy, and all adults who may work with young people or vulnerable adults—whether assisting or acting as coxswains—are fully DBS checked.

Club Objectives.

The objectives of the Club are to:

Provide a safe, supportive, and inclusive environment in which Pendeen Gig Club members can participate in all forms of gig rowing and related activities.
Promote and develop the sport of gig rowing within Cornwall.
Support and contribute to the physical and mental wellbeing of all members.
Ensure that all current and future members are treated fairly and equally at all times.
Provide appropriate facilities and effective administration to enable members to participate in rowing and any other sports that may be conveniently combined with it. This includes events organised by the Cornish Pilot Gig Association (CPGA), as well as social and friendly regattas organised by other clubs.
Encourage participation and involvement in rowing by people of all ages and backgrounds, regardless of gender, race, disability, social background, ethnic origin, sexual orientation, nationality, colour, parental or marital status, pregnancy, religious belief, social status, or political belief, and to promote knowledge and enjoyment of the sport through all rowing activities.

Membership.

Membership of the Club is open to all individuals who support the objectives of the Club.

All members have three, free, taster sessions to see if they like the sport before joining the club.

The following classes of membership are available:

Full Membership

Open to adults aged 18 years and over.

Social Membership

Open to adults aged 18 years and over. Social members have access to training sessions but are NOT eligible to race in regattas or championships.

Should a social member decide they wish to upgrade to Full Membership this is possible pro-rata, the amount to upgrade is a committee decision depending on the time of year etc.

Young Adult / University Membership Available to members aged 18–21 years.
Members who are attending university are entitled to a reduced membership rate.
Members of university age (18–21) who are not attending university will be categorised as Young Adult Members and are entitled to the same reduced membership rate.
Junior Membership

Open to young people in school years 7 to 13.

Junior members who have been paid members of the junior section for a minimum of one year are entitled to two years of free membership, to be used between the ages of 18 and 21.

 Associate Membership

Open to any individual who wishes to support the Club in a non-rowing capacity.

The great London River race.
The Venice Vogalonga.

Newlyn Raft Race – racing & a stall to promote the club.

NB: On a weekly basis we can offer 6 opportunities for rowing and often have three boats out on any one day.

Coxing:

Over the past year and continuing into 2026, we have been delivering a structured coxswain training and development programme.

The programme covers key areas including environmental awareness, radio operation, safety at sea, understanding weather conditions, and how to respond to medical emergencies. In addition, we run dedicated man-overboard training sessions and accredited first aid courses.

All trainee coxswains are paired with an experienced cox during on-water sessions and are provided with a comprehensive training handbook to support their learning.

Progression is supported through a clear three-tier assessment system, designed to ensure trainee coxswains feel safe, confident, and well supported as they develop their skills. The tiers are as follows:

Level 1 – Novice Coxswain: An experienced cox seated directly behind the trainee.
Level 2 – Novice Coxswain: An experienced cox seated in position six.
Level 3 – Novice Coxswain: An experienced cox present elsewhere in the boat.

Finance &Fundraising:

Our main sources on income are from:

Club membership.
Small grants.
Local grants.
Fundraising events run by the membership.

Outgoings:

Mooring fees for 3 boats in Newlyn Harbour.
Insurance.
Maintenance of 5 boats, oars, trolleys, trailers etc, including regular repair and replacement of all safety equipment, such as radio’s , lifejackets, seats , set of new oars etc.
Admin, membership to the CPGA, Cornish Pilot Gig Association, pilot gig clubs governing body.
Race fees.

Achievements:

The coxes development programme, which has enabled the club to recruit more coxes, giving them the skills and confidence over an extended period.
Being involved in more community events: The Newlyn Raft race. Newlyn Christmas switch on.
Featured on BBC spotlight prior to World championships.
Taster sessions with residents of Treneere estate in collaboration with WAC (Whole Again Community) centre.
More social activities

Quarterly Trustees Meeting:

We held the first of our quarterly on January 19th 2026.

We reiterated the role of trustees.

Recruitment of new trustees.
