The Dick Nunn Smithy Preservation Trust
Report of the Trustees For the Period 1[st] August 2024 – 31st July 2025
The Trustees present their report with the financial statements of the charity for the period 1[st] August 2024 – 31[st] July 2025. The Trustees have adopted the provision of Accounting and Reporting by Charities; Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102).
Objectives and Activities
-
The preservation and protection of the building known as Dick Nunn’s smithy in Swan Yard, Coggeshall, Essex for the benefit of the public as a building of social, historical and architectural interest and importance.
-
To maintain a museum in the smithy to educate the public in a unique aspect of the town’s social and cultural history in the life and concerns of blacksmith and campaigner Henry ‘Dick’ Nunn.
Significant Activities
We are sad to report the death of Mr Reg Foster the owner of the smithy. Although the transfer documents were complete, they were unsigned on his death. His daughter made a commitment to accede to Reg’s wishes and continue the transfer of the smithy to the Trust, but there was subsequently a change of heart and the house and smithy were later sold to a private buyer.
In these circumstances the Trust’s major objectives cannot be achieved.
The Trust have been in touch with the new owners to ensure that they are aware of the building’s historic importance. They have assured us that the smithy will be safe in their hands.
We must also record the death of our Trustee Julian Prideaux in February 2025. His experience and positive approach will be sorely missed.

Financial Review
Financial Position
On 1[st] August 2024 the balance of our account was £2,829.63 and as of 31[st] July 2025, the closing balance was £3,706.25
Reserves Policy
The reserves policy is to maintain sufficient funds to cover on-going commitments and at a level that considers external and inflationary pressures.
Future Plans
In the light of the private sale of the smithy, remaining funds will be used as the Trustees think most closely aligns with the objectives of the Trust. Once funds are assigned and spent it is expected that the Trust will be formally wound up.
