Charity registration number: 1199651

Objectives and Activities

SORP reference
Summary of the purposes of
the charity as set out in its
governing document
Para 1.17 The objects of the CIO are to advance the
art of music, in particular contemporary and
classical music, and to educate the public
in such music in England for the public
benefit. This is accomplished by providing
encouragement, financial support and
education to the composition, arrangement,
publication and public performance of
contemporary and classical music and by
providing educational material to the public
in relation to contemporary and classical
music.
Summary of the main
activities in relation to those
purposes for the public
benefit, in particular, the
activities, projects or
services identified in the
accounts.
Para 1.17 and
1.19
The aim of the charity is to support
composers and musicians in the creation of
new music. This is achieved by
commissioning composers to write music
and providing performance opportunities for
the work to be heard.
The public benefit of the charity is realised
through the charity’s ambition to create new
and meaningful musical experiences which
the public can enjoy and appreciate. During
2023 the charity commissioned a new
double bass concerto written by composer
Ian Stephens. The 23-24 accounts
represent the income and expenditure from
performance of the concerto which took
place in April 2023.
Statement confirming
whether the trustees have
had regard to the guidance
issued by the Charity
Commission on public
benefit
Para 1.18 The trustees are aware of the requirement
to ensure that all activity undertaken by the
charity needs to provide public benefit. I
can confirm the Trustees have regard for
this guidance.

bass concerto.
Aside from the £8,000 grant for the cost of
the commission paid to the composer
during the previous account period, the
charity raised £3,039 from private
donations and £3,867 of revenue from the
event itself. This money went towards the
event running costs which included
musician fees and venue hire.
This performance was a success and
attended by over 200 people. The concerto
has since been performed by another
orchestra and we are hopeful of further
performances in the future.
