For all of us at Untold this was a year of pausing, reflecting and rebuilding in an effort to prepare ourselves for a more sustainable future as an organisation.
I began last year's annual report with acknowledging the challenges that we faced responding to a seeming drop in funding available. Unfortunately that only became more challenging this year.
During this period we didn’t receive any successful funding bids, and not for want of trying. We had over 20 grant applications rejected with feedback sharing ‘your project is amazing, it aligns with our priorities and it’s a well written application, but sorry it’s really competitive right now’. At moments, we definitely questioned the sanity of continuing in such a landscape, but our collective belief in the vision of our work and the continued success of our events agency motivated us to keep chipping away.
This lack of funding naturally led to a lack of project opportunities so we were unable to curate any new productions or begin new engagement activities, so our focus stuck to 3 core aspects:
1.Maintaining our Corporate Events Agency
2.Ensuring the NIA Choir continued
3.Strengthening our position as a Charity
Over the following pages we’ll give a brief overview as to what each of these focuses looked like during the year.
Before that there’s a few thank yous that need to happen. First to our outgoing trustees during this period, Jodie Ratcliffe, Kiera Skillen and Yemi Bolatiwa. Jodie and Yemi served as trustees since we registered as a charity and Kiera not long after. They have been a huge help to our development and without their dedication and support we wouldn’t have got this far. Yemi continues her involvement with Untold in different capacities, and Jodie and Kiera are still around - just now supporting from the sidelines! Their departure led to multiple new trustees joining the board, which you can find more about in the third section of this report.
And finally a huge thank you to the freelance musicians and creatives that have continued to work with us on achieving our vision. An orchestra is clearly nothing without the musicians that make it, and we’re lucky to work with not just talented people, but people who believe in using music to make the world a little bit brighter and are committed to our efforts in trying to do this.
Whilst at times challenging, we’re fortunate that thanks to the power of music our work, at whatever scale, continues to be full of joy. Here’s to more of that in the future!

For clarity, this annual report from a project perspective looks at our work between April 2025 and April 2026 but the financial information given is from the period August 2024-August 2025. This is due to our programming year and financial years not quite aligning whilst we were waiting for our charity bank account to be opened. O U R S T O R Y
The journey of The Untold Orchestra has been nothing short of transformative. It has been a process of collaboration, creativity, and resilience, made possible by the talents, dedication, and spirit of hundreds of individuals. From the very beginning, our focus has been on fostering connections—both on stage and behind the scenes—with local communities in Hulme and Moss Side, LGBTQIA+ groups, and an ever-growing network of creative freelancers. These are the people who have supported and inspired us, constantly challenging and redefining our vision of what an orchestra can be.
Our mission has always been to support these communities—creatively, professionally, and personally—by offering meaningful opportunities that extend beyond the stage, reaching audiences across the UK and beyond.
Founded just before the pandemic, the project initially aimed to bring people together through creative experiences, while also supporting local artists through recording projects and performances. Like many others, our ambitious plans were disrupted by lockdown. However, the creation of a series of ‘lockdown-style’ videos became the catalyst for The Untold Orchestra. We quickly realized that, beyond the challenges, there was an incredible opportunity to make a positive impact on both artists and audiences, and so the project evolved.
Once restrictions lifted, we emerged from behind screens and into live performances, playing to crowds of 120,00 people a year, many of them at local gigs within Manchester. During this time, we began to refine our vision for the future of Untold. After three years of performing, launching a community choir, running jam nights for young people, performing in care homes, collaborating with artists nationwide, becoming a registered charity, and building a dedicated organisational team, we are now poised to take the next step in our journey. Our commitment remains the same: to make creative experiences, live music, and orchestras accessible to all, while continuing to grow and enhance the positive impact we have on our communities.

THE UNTOLD ORCHESTRA Corporate Events Agency
For those learning of our work for the first time, following a huge demand in our first year out of Covid for live performances, the running of an events agency became a significant part of our organisational model as it allowed us to:
1.Generate funds to support our community centered activities
2.Provide regular work for our freelance network
3.Raise awareness to our name across Greater Manchester and further afield
4.Work with partners that have a shared vision of supporting community life through music
Over the year these performances provided work opportuniy to over 100 freelance musicians and creatives. Notable performances included:
ISLE OF MAN
We spent 5 days on the Isle of Man with 20 of our musicians performing 3 shows in partnership with the Arts Council for the Isle of Man. This was our first mini tour as an organisation, and we were warmly welcomed by the AC team and local residents performing the 3 shows including: Amy Winehouse, Disney and the Bee Gees.
WARRINGTON PROMS
We returned to Warrington for our annual involvement in their Proms in the Square, holding off the rain for another memorable afternoon joining some of Warrington’s local artists for a big celebration in Times Square
RNCM Young Explorers: Queens of Pop
Another regular favourite in our yearly calendar is our young explorers concert, introducing children to orchestras for the first time. This time we focused on Queens of Pop, celebrating artists including Chappell Roan, Beyonce and of course, Spice Girls. This performance is always a powerful reminder to all of our musicians of why it’s so important to perform music familiar and relevant to young people, showing them what music can do for them as they get older.
KENDAL CALLING
They can’t keep us away! We love our August weekend at Kendal Calling, this time with two shows - Hip Hop legends and Soul Dedications, a show where the audience choose the set list and have the opportunity to dedicate each song to their loved ones. Kendal is always a really enjoyable festival to be involved with, with great family audiences that always make us feel welcome.
MANCHESTER PRIDE
We were involved in 2 performances at Manchester Pride this year. The first in collaboration with one of our main creative partners Ghetto Fabulous, in a reimagined version of their catwalk extravaganza ‘House of MCR’ involving over 100 artists, dancers, performers and the NIA Choir. Secondly we were grateful to be asked again by Nathaniel Hall and the George House Trust to support the musical delivery of the Vigil held on the Monday of Pride. This time we worked with dancers, guest vocalists and actors in a 2 hour piece that paid tribute to those who have lost their lives to HIV.
JD FOUNDATION GALA
Working with JD Foundation and Square Fish Events we performed at their annual foundation gala. The foundation supports youth activity across the country, and it felt right that we should work with 2 local young people supported by the foundation. We worked with April (10) and Zephy (11) from Salford Youth Zone and Hideout Youth Zone with them both singing solo performances backed by our musicians. The two of them smashed it, providing powerhouse vocals for songs by Beyonce, Stevie Wonder and more!
INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY
March 2026 saw our first performance in Stalybridge where we curated a show celebrating female songwriters past and present. Supported by the NIA Choir, we performed to a sold out Stalybridge Civic Hall in what was a beautiful evening of music.
THE UNTOLD ORCHESTRA NIA CHOIR
The NIA Choir has been our flagship engagement program since 2022, offering a beautiful weekly space for any female identifying people in and around Hulme and Moss Side to learn to sing, whilst building friendships and becoming part of a community.
This year the choir continued its journey of growth ending the year with a membership of 163+ people who had joined us over the year.

During this year we held our first ever fundraising concert at the NIAMOS and it was a huge success. Thanks to a raffle that included some of the best prizes you can imagine, we managed to raise £4500 towards the costs of the choir. We were thrilled to have an audience of around 200 people there to support the choir's continuation and look forward to it being a regular part of our annual calendar!
Other memorable performances for the NIA Choir include a Christmas Showcase at Factory International, House of MCR at Manchester Pride, Business in the Community at Aviva Studios and supporting the Untold Orchestra at the International Women’s Day concert at Stalybridge Civic Hall.
A huge thank you needs to go to Nicole Battick, for not just her facilitation but for the energy she brings weekly to the rehearsals. And further thanks to Reyan Murtadha for her impeccable coordination of the choir.
THE UNTOLD ORCHESTRA Strengthening Our Position as a Charity
Recognising that this year wouldn’t involve as many projects as normal, we felt it was the perfect opportunity to develop our organisational capacity, strengthening our position as a charity, allowing us to be better prepared for future projects we were planning. This development included:
BOARD DEVELOPMENT
Recruiting more people onto our board of trustees, particularly those with experience in youth development, fundraising and with a connection to our local communities of Hulme and Moss Side. With the departure of past trustees, we now have an enitrely new board that boast a wealth of experience and who share in our vision of uplifitng community life through music. POLICY DEVELOPMENT
We recognised the need for developing our policies to best suit not just our work now, but our future plans. With the help of external consultancy and the support of our new board we spent significant time reviewing our existing policies and amending them based on our learnings over recent years. We’ve had a particular emphasis on ensuring our safeguarding policies align with the work we plan to deliver over the coming years, recognising the responsibility for our vision of inclusive spaces to be backed by policy.
FUNDRAISING
The eternal struggle of any arts organisation at our stage in development is fundraising, particularly now as funds appear to be limited. During this time we continued applying for grants but have begun to develop new strategies for diversifying our income including crowdfunding, corporate training and individual donorship. With limited resources these will take time to build but we are optimistic, with the level of reach and impact we have had thus far, that we will find new ways to buid a more secure future for us as an organisation.
BRANDING
In consultation with the board we recognised the barriers that present when we present ourselves as an orchestra. People’s preconceived notions of what an orchestra is and who it’s for often limits conversations on our impact going further. Whilst we are definitely not your typical orchestra, it’s not always easy to help other people see this. Our charity name is Untold Stories and we have decided to lead with this going forward showing ourselves as Untold Stories - an organisation focused on building community through music via multiple activities including The Untold Orchestra, the NIA Choir, Care Home Sessions, Community Centered Performances and more (see below!) Over the coming months we will be redesigning our website and amending our social media profiles to better reflect this branding.
STRATEGIC DEVELOPMENT
IWith a newly recruited Board of Trustees in place, we have and will continue to spend the forseeable future with significant focus on our strategic development. Initially much of our work has been responsive in its approach, and whilst this brings certain strenghts we recognise the need to develop strategic plans that think more long term, strenghtening he long term viability of our work.

Objectives and Activities
Aims and Objectives
The objects ('Objects') of the CIO are to promote, maintain, improve and advance education and the arts, in particular musical education and musical arts, in particular but not exclusively by organising, managing and providing orchestras, orchestral, instrumental, vocal and cross art-form performances and related educational activities. For the purposes of these Objects, 'the arts' includes but is not limited to music, drama, mime, dancing and singing.
Public Benefit
The trustees confirm that they have complied with the requirements of Section 17 of the Charities Act 2011 to have due regard to the Charity Commission’s guidance on public benefit.
Achievements and Performance
Main Achievements
During this year, whilst waiting for our bank account to be opened for the CIO and to manage the transition from operating as the CIC to operating as the CIO our primary focus has been developing the board of trustees. We have focused on recruiting a larger board of trustees, reflective of our target communities that have the necessary experience and skills to support our work in the long term. The CIC has continued to deliver our engagement opportunity including our community choir and partnership projects with several local community partners.

I report to the trustees on my examination of the accounts of Untold Stories (the Trust) for the year ended 31 August 2025.
Responsibilities and Basis of Report
As the charity trustees of the Trust you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (“the Act”).
I report in respect of my examination of the Trust’s accounts carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act and in carrying out my examination, I have followed the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act.
Independent Examiner's Statement
I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe that in any material respect:

accounting records were not kept in respect of the Trust as required by section 130 of the Act; or
-
the accounts do not accord with those records; or
-
the accounts do not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and contents of accounts set out in the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 other than any requirement that the accounts give a 'true and fair view' which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination.
I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.

1. General Information
Untold Stories is a charitable incorporated organisation registered with the Charity Commission, registered charity number 1199606. The principal address is Flat 36, Queens Brewery Court, 46 Moss Lane West, Manchester, M15 5FB.
2. Accounting Policies
2.1. Basis of Preparation of Financial Statements
The financial statements have been prepared in accordance with the Charities SORP (FRS 102) "Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2019)", Financial Reporting Standard 102 "The Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland" and the Charities Act 2011.
The charity is a Public Benefit Entity as defined by FRS 102.
2.2. Incoming Resources
All incoming resources are included in the statement of financial activities when the Charity is entitled to the income and the amount can be quantified with reasonable accuracy. The following specific policies are applied to particular categories of income.
2.3. Resources Expended
Liabilities are recognised as resources expended when there is a legal or constructive obligation committing the Charity to the expenditure.
2.4. Cash and Cash Equivalents
Cash and cash equivalents are basic financial assets and include cash in hand and deposits held at call with banks, other short-term highly liquid investments that mature in no more than three months from the date of acquisition and are readily convertible to a known amount of cash with insignificant risk of change in value, and bank overdrafts.
2.5. Taxation
The charity is exempt from tax as all its income is charitable and applied for charitable purposes.
Irrecoverable VAT is included in the Statement of Financial Activities, and is reported as part of the expenditure to which it relates.
