CIO - FOUNDATION Registered 06 Jul 2022 Objectives and Activities

The objects of the charity are to relieve poverty among individuals facing financial hardship, particularly in Africa, by providing sustainable feminine hygiene products and by teaching and training women to produce these products. The charity also aims to advance and promote health by making these products accessible and by educating women about menstruation and their own bodies. This empowers women to make informed decisions and enhances their access to life opportunities, including education.

Activities - How the Charity Utilizes Its Resources

Mabel adopts a holistic approach to addressing period poverty in remote areas of Africa. We collaborate with local communities and organizations to distribute reusable period products, provide menstrual education, train local sewing groups to produce reusable pads, transforming them into micro-enterprises, and conduct surveys to gain deeper insights and offer better support to these communities.

The Trustees who served during the year and up to the date of signature of the financial statements were:

Achievements and performances

After many months working closely with the law firm Reed Smith, The Mabel Foundation was finally converted from a C.I.C to a C.I.O. in July 2022. We are so very grateful to the team at Reed Smith for picking us as a pro bono client and making this big dream of ours come true.

This was a quieter year for The Mabel Foundation as team members got stuck into their careers and personal lives. Even with the team tied up, all the ground work we’d put into the MWCT sustainable period project the year before paved the way for the project to keep running albeit at a slower pace.

In May 2022 we started working with The Period Company to bring reusable period underwear to 210 girls in 7 schools in the Kuku Group Ranch area in Southern Kenya. We raised $5000 from friends and family and MWCT contributed the remaining $2331.66 to purchase and ship 630 period underwear as well as print the menstrual pamphlets and menstrual posters. 3 period underwear were put into a Mabel Kit with washcloth, soap, menstrual pamphlet and menstrual bracelet for each girl. The Heri Sewing College in Malindi, Kenya sourced all materials and sewed the Mabel Kits (drawstring bag, washcloth and soap) along with the materials for the menstrual bracelet. The Heri Sewing College also organised the courier of kits to MWCT headquarters in Kuku Group Ranch. All girls received a menstrual pamphlet translated into Swahili as well as menstrual education taught by MWCT’s Agnes when the Mabel kits were distributed. With the help of MWCT we conducted research and data analysis on the introduction of reusable period underwear to see the uptake and pros and cons to the product. In December 2022 Tricia from MWCT gave us the great news that following the surveys and data received, no girls had missed school since receiving either the Mabel reusable pad or period underwear.

In August Lucy at The Heri Sewing College sent us pictures of the extensions that had been built onto the school thanks to the income they’d received making and sewing Mabel Kits. This was a very special moment for The Mabel Foundation where we could see the longer term benefits of the sewing project implemented in 2019. The Heri Sewing College had developed into a micro-enterprise. We are so fortunate to have a partner in Lucy the headmistress of The Heri Sewing College who has managed sourcing of materials, orders, quality control and delivery of The Mabel Kits.

INDEPENDENT EXAMINER'S REPORT

FOR THE YEAR ENDED 30 April 2023

I report to the trustees on my examination of the accounts of the charitable company for the year ended 30th April 2023.

Responsibilities and basis of report

As the charity Trustees, who are also directors for the purposes of company law, are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Companies Act 2006 ('the 2006 Act'). Having satisfied myself that the accounts of the Company are not required to be audited under Part 16 of the 2006 Act and are eligible for independent examination, I report in respect of my examination of your charity's accounts carried out undersection 145 of the Charities Act 2011 ('the 2011 Act'). In carrying out my examination I have followed the Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the 2011 Act.

Independent examiners statement

I have completed my examination. I confirm that no matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe that in any material respect:

  1. accounting records were not kept in respect of the Company as required by section 386 of the 2006 Act; or

  2. the accounts do not accord with those records; or

  3. the accounts do not comply with the requirements of section 396 of the 2006 Act other than any requirement that the accounts give a 'true and fair view' which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination; or

  4. the accounts have not been prepared in accordance with the methods and principles of the Statement of Recommended Practice for accounting and reporting by charities applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102).

I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.

The principal accounting policies adopted by the Charity, which is a public benefit entity, in the preparation of the accounts are as follows.

1.2 Basis of preparation

These accounts have been prepared under the historical cost convention, as modified by the inclusion of charitable properties and fixed asset investments and investment properties at valuation.

These accounts have been prepared in accordance with “Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102)” (effective 1 January 2019) - (Charities SORP (FRS 102)), the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) and the Charities Act 2011.

These accounts are presented in pounds sterling and rounded to the nearest pound.

1.3 Going concern

The Trustees have prepared financial projections, taking into consideration the current economic conditions and have, at the time of approving these accounts, a reasonable expectation that the charity has adequate resources to continue in operational existence for the foreseeable future. Thus they continue to adopt the going concern basis of accounting in preparing the accounts.
