The object of the CIO is: The advancement of art To advance education in the arts by the establishment and maintenance of a major collection of artwork by the artist Brian Nolan, this will be achieved by: Exhibiting his work in a wide range of galleries, museums and public collections, particularly, but not exclusively, in the Manchester and Peak District areas Promoting participation in watercolour painting and an interest in the medium Permitting images to be used as appropriate Enabling access to digital images and original work for research and educational purposes During the period covered by this report the trustees attended to the organisational requirements of a new charity, including opening a bank account, establishing a cycle of meetings and preparing and maintaining financial records. However, the charity also began to work towards achieving its objectives as set out in the activities listed below. ## **Exhibition at Salisbury Library** The charity arranged to hold an exhibition at Salisbury library during April 2023 and work was completed towards this during the period of this report. The trustees identified work to exhibit and arranged for some to be framed in preparation. The exhibition was an opportunity to introduce Brian to a new audience and time was spent producing display and publicity materials and organising a preview evening. ## **Derbyshire Open Arts** The charity was invited to exhibit Brian’s work alongside Hayfield artists during Derbyshire Open Arts weekend, in May 2023. As the event provides an opportunity for living artists to exhibit their work and meet the public, we had to approach the committee to ask if Brian’s work could be included. We were delighted when the committee agreed that we could take part. Through the spring of 2023 we began to prepare pictures to be exhibited and submitted our entry to the event’s brochure and website. ## **Exhibition at Patchings Art Centre, Nottinghamshire** The charity was invited to hold an exhibition at Patchings Art Centre from May to June 2023 and preparations for this were also completed during this reporting period. ## **Storage and conservation** The charity invested money in good quality storage boxes (Solander Boxes) in which to keep unframed pictures. Some conservation work was completed on pictures which the trust identified as being an important part of the core collection of work. ## **Framing** In preparation for the exhibition in Salisbury 11 pictures were framed; an investment in the work for the long term. ## **Sale of pictures** The charity owns a large collection of Brian’s work. Some are framed and were exhibited by him in the past, but many are not. Most of the work we own was completed in the later part of his career, when he had decided not to sell so many of his pictures. We currently have a very limited range of his work from his early career and would like to acquire examples of this work when it becomes available. The trustees have therefore agreed that some of his pictures can be sold in order to help to fund the charity’s work and, in particular, to enable us to buy work which is under-represented in our current collection. The work selected for sale is not part of the core collection which will be exhibited widely. The pictures are not the best examples of his work (in a particular style or of a particular area) but are still appealing to the public. In the autumn of 2022 we sold four pictures, raising £1670. ## **Public benefit** During this time the charity was preparing for three exhibitions, from April to June 2023, which would be freely available to the public. The charity began to review all the pictures in its collection, identifying those which require conservation, framing or particular storage requirements. Investing in the work in this way is a vital part of the charity’s work and will ensure that the art work can be appreciated by the public in the future.
