Chairman’s Address
Good evening and welcome to this AGM in 2024.
Another busy year has flown by, and it is good to see from the balance sheet that we are in a healthy financial position with both the junior show and the pantomime making a quite considerable profit. Congratulations to all involved and to Vicki O’Hare on her directorial debut.
Performance wise we are flying. I said at last year’s AGM that we had set the bar high but this year it is even higher. All three of the 2023 shows received excellent audience feedback, so we now must take it higher still. The incredible audience response to ‘Oliver’ this year shows that we are well on the way to doing that.
As always, this is my opportunity to say ‘Thank you’ to all the Society members, new and old for their loyalty and commitment. Whether you are involved on stage, backstage, front of house or in one of the other myriad jobs that are necessary to keep the society ticking, your support is vital. It is the membership that holds UMT together.
I want to thank our Secretary, Eleanor, for her work in what has been, for her, a very active first year and to Pam for stepping up to assist whilst Eleanor and Adam celebrated the birth of their baby boy. Thanks also to the committee for their support and their efforts on your behalf during the past year. As you can see from your notice, Ian and Pamela Darke are standing down, so a huge ‘Thank you’ to them for their contributions to the committee over the past 10 years.
I am confident that, with your continued support, 2024 will prove to be as successful both artistically and financially as 2023. Hopefully even more so.

Honorary Secretary’s Report
Hello everyone, good evening. I am happy to share the Secretary’s report for 2023.
Obituaries
Kath Goodier (96 years) passed in January 2023. Kath was a long-standing member, who took part in a number of UMT shows, most notably Annie Get Your Gun back in the 1980s/1990s. She also did tickets for a period of time and was a well-liked member of the society.
Long-standing member Eunice Eccles passed away in May 2023. Eunice was with UMT for many years, taking part in concerts and shows, and was also our representative and ticket secretary for Showcase.
John Partridge passed away in October. John’s introduction into amateur theatre came in the Urmston Amateur Operatic Society’s 1979 pantomime, Cinderella. Since then John had many interesting, varied and entertaining roles over the 44 years that he entertained us.
Our 2023 season started in April with our production of Sister Act, performed at Move, Urmston. The production team consisted of Emma Bowyer (Director & Choreographer) and Ed Nurse (Musical Director), with support from James Goodwin & Debbie Jones (Assistant MDs) and Lyndsey Florin (Assistant Choreographer).
The production received rave reviews from the audiences.
ACT Nominations: Bronte Hooper, Kathleen Valentine and Lynsey Cassidy for Most Accomplished Character Actresses (Sisters Mary Robert, Patrick and Lazarus), Jon Gardner for Most Accomplished Supporting Actor (Curtis), Daniel Mellor for Most Original Character Actor (Monsignor O’Hara), Sue Mallett for Most Accomplished Actress (Deloris), Adam Garnett for Most Accomplished Supporting Actor (Eddie), Margaret Johnston for Most Accomplished Supporting Actress (Mother Superior) and The Company for Most Accomplished Vocal Ensemble Performance.
Winning their category was Daniel Mellor for Most original character actor (Monsignor O’Hara)
NODA Nominations: Best Programme, Adam Garnett for Best Male Comedy Performance (Eddie), Jon Gardner for Best Supporting Male Character in a Musical (Curtis), Margaret Johnston for Best Supporting Female Character in a Musical (Mother Superior), The Nuns for Best Ensemble Performance, Bronte Hooper for Best Vocal Performance (Sister Mary Robert), Sue Mallett for Best All-Round

Winning their category was Jon Gardner for Best supporting Male Character in a Musical (Curtis)
In July our Juniors performed the much-loved Matilda. The production team consisted of Emma Bowyer (Director & Choreographer) and Debbie Jones (Musical Director). The production was a triumph, enjoyed by the cast and audiences alike.

NODA Nominations: For the Best Comedy Performance in a youth production, both Samuel Henshall for Mr Wormwood and Marcus Florin for Agatha Trunchbull, Jess Vernon for Best Supporting Female in a youth musical Emma Bowyer for Best Director of a Youth Production and Matilda for Best Youth production.

In December we produced Aladdin, written by Doreen Cockshott with the production team of Vicki O’Hare making her directing debut, Lorraine Callan as Choreographer and Adam Garnett as MD. Congratulations to Vicki on her first directing venture. And congratulations to the cast for performing 3 shows on the Saturday, which included a sold-out performance to the Scout movement.
ACT Nominations have yet to be announced.
We didn’t receive any NODA awards, but nominated were: Best programme, Chris Reid for Best Supporting Role in a Pantomime (Slave of the ring), Bradley Wigglesworth for Best Pantomime Dame (Widow Twankey), Megan Collier for Best Leading Role in a Pantomime (Princess Lotus Blossom)
Jay Talbot also received a nomination for the Rep’s special award at this year’s NODAs.
At the ACT Pantomime awards in 2023, our 2022 production of Cinderella was recognised, with Bradley Wigglesworth receiving the award for Most Creative Comedy Portrayal (Buttons) and Alexandra Severn the award for Most Accomplished Principal Boy (Prince Charming).
Congratulations to all.
2023 saw many socials organised by our social-committee. In February we enjoyed the Winter Ball, in May we had a BBQ for King Charles II Coronation, in August we enjoyed an Oliver! Watch party with fish and chips, September saw another BBQ, October a Halloween film night to watch the classic, Halloween, and our annual bonfire night took place in November. Many thanks to the social committee for organising these events.
2023 also saw many fundraising efforts. Michelle Speakman organised a Fashion Show evening in May, raising £770 for the society. We held a Macmillan Coffee Morning in September, with Michelle, Pam, Pamela and Ian taking the lead, raising £405. Our chosen charity for 2023 was Changing Lives Carrington, a local animal charity – our door collections raised a fantastic £991.78 for the charity.
Effort has continued to be given to Pennybridge, including a new fence and extending the car park. Thanks to Alan, Rik, Chris, Adam and the rest of the crew for your continuous hard work in maintaining and developing Pennybridge.
2023 saw the following members receive medals for their services to NODA. Yvonne Bissett, Rachel Mellor, Megan Collier and Laura Sullivan for 15 years, and Alan Pickwick for 60 years. Alan’s commitment to UMT is indisputable, thank you Alan for the time and resources you have given UMT over the years, and for your continued dedication.
This year’s AGM sees committee members Pamela and Ian stepping down from their roles – thank you for your service over the years to the committee and society.
Our 2023 AGM saw Vicki O’Hare join as Wardrobe Manager, and Bradley Wigglesworth and Kathleen Valentine as General Members. Thank you to them, alongside the rest of the committee for your dedication to UMT. Producing 3 shows a year to a large scale requires a lot of work, alongside ensuring we provide social opportunities for members to enjoy outside of the productions – everyone’s efforts are appreciated. This society brings joy to thousands of people each year – our members, audiences and beneficiaries of our charities, and we should be proud of our part in making that happen.

The Honorary Treasurer is pleased to attach the balance sheet below. It has been a sound financial year for UMT and there have been no financial irregularities. We have a subsidiary bank account to isolate our internet-based ticket sales from our main account. The subsidiary account is swept into the main account but reverse movements are not possible. Our reserves are held in a Santander account.
At the theatre, we collect for local charities. This year we collected for the Saving Lives at Carrington.
No other restricted fund receipts, payments or balances arose in this financial year.
We hold sufficient reserves to cover the costs of a major show that is ready to stage but then cannot be performed.
The Honorary Auditors were Mr Ian Darke and Mrs Anita Partridge.

Reporting Serious Incidents (June 2008 Regulations)
The trustees confirm that for the reporting year 1[st] January 2023 to 31[st] December 2023 no serious incidents arose within Urmston Musical Theatre that could significantly harm the charity’s property, work, beneficiaries or reputation.
The trustees declare that there are no serious incidents or other matters which they should have brought to the Commissioners’ attention but have not. The trustees understand that failure to provide this confirmation would be a breach of legal requirements.

Independent Examiner’s Report to the Trustees of Urmston Musical Theatre.
I report on the accounts of UMT for the year ended 31[st] December 2023.
Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner:
The charity’s trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts. The charity’s trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year (under section 43(2) of the Charities Act 1993 (the 1993 Act)) and that an independent examination is needed.
It is my responsibility to:
- examine the accounts (under section 43(3)(a) of the 1993 Act);
• to follow the procedures laid down in the General Directions given by the Charity Commission (under section 43(7)(b) of the 1993 Act); and
• to state whether particular matters have come to my attention.
Basis of independent examiner’s report:
My examination was carried out in accordance with the General Directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts and seeking explanations from you as trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently I do not express an audit opinion on the view given by the accounts.
Independent examiner’s statement:
In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention:
1) which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect the requirements
• to keep accounting records in accordance with section 41 of the 1993 Act; and
• to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and comply with the accounting requirements of the 1993 Act have not been met; or
2) to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
